As some people I know are and can afford to go weeks travelling and then others are just staying in the UK, or doing nothing at all.

What are you guys all up to?

I’ve been to Spain twice already this year. We just do short breaks. It was cheaper than a weekend in London! Generally do Airbnb, cheap Ryanair flights with no extra bags, only eat out when we really want to, otherwise it’s supermarket picnics. Very affordable.

Crete in late September. It’s SC, and I’m going then because the temperature will be tolerable for me. I like visiting places of historical importance over a beach holiday.

That's the glory of Greece - you can do both!

We are also going to Crete in September and a trip to Ireland in June.

I’m going to Skiathos Greece in July and to Tenerife in September for two weeks. We’re also thinking of going for a week in Cornwall, I’ve never been and my friend said it’s lovely.

Nomedshere · 21/02/2026 14:27

Port de Soller, Malaga Seville, Lisbon and Paris all booked.

Squirrelchops1 · 21/02/2026 14:29

Sicily and Greece

Flingotheflamingo · 21/02/2026 14:30

We’ve already been to Budapest. Disneyland Paris in March, Antalya in June and Tunisia in July.

London (a flight away) in September for Bon Jovi - and hopefully we’ll get another week somewhere in October/November.

Reclaiminglife · 21/02/2026 14:30

I’m going to Poland tomorrow, a caravan in Northumberland in two weeks. Malaga two weeks later. Six weeks in France and Spain from May. Cornwall in September and Greece in October

BlueEyedBogWitch · 21/02/2026 14:31

Tenerife the week after next. We’ve both had flu and need to escape the rain, mud and grey skies.

Squirrelsandhedgehogs · 21/02/2026 14:32

Going to Sri Lanka

How does everyone afford it?! 🤔 I thought we had a cost of living crisis?! Me and my girlfriend can only afford a trip abroad for one week a year and we’re on 65K before tax income per year.

What does SC mean @EnglishBreakfastTea1?

We get less than you. We live frugally and travel cheaply. It’s a priority for us.

lots of posters will also simply have more money than you.

ShanghaiDiva · 21/02/2026 14:39

Am away at the moment in Chile.

fussychica · 21/02/2026 14:39

Went to Madeira in January, going to Lanzarote in a villa with pool next month, cat sitting near London over Easter, road trip down to Provence in May, French Riviera June, two month long trips to Spain at the end of the year. We usually self cater and try to avoid travelling in the school holidays.
I don't do long haul, much to the chagrin of DH.

Soufriere · 21/02/2026 14:40

I’m currently in St Lucia.

Not much else planned as yet apart from a wedding in Mauritius in October and a long weekend in Rome in May.

BG2015 · 21/02/2026 14:40

Already been to Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago.

Going to Whitby for Easter, Tunisia for 2 weeks end of April. Cruise around Spain to see the total solar eclipse in August and 4 weeks traveling around Thailand and Malaysia in November.

the joys of early retirement

How do people afford it? Mostly by earning more, or by having lower housing costs / bills or by prioritising holidays over other outgoings. Or by booking holidays on credit.

We've just been to Spain for 5 days and are going to France for 10 days to 2 weeks (undecided) in the summer.

Meadowfinch · 21/02/2026 14:41

DS finishes his a'levels on June 24th. We will go to Kefalonia where he will sleep in the shade for the first three days and I will swim and soak up some sun.
Then we will eat pittas and tsatsiki, and seabass & lemon couscous, and drive a tiny hire car down terrifying hairpin roads.

Maybe only a week, out of season, in self catering but it will be brilliant 😎

Elfie23 · 21/02/2026 14:41

Estapona in August with my DD and taking my niece with us this year

Gettingbysomehow · 21/02/2026 14:42

Im going abroad for a week for a facelift. I dont do holidays any more. I dont like leaving my girls in a cattery. Id sooner spend my time off with them in my own home. I live in a holiday destination anyway.
I did all my travelling in my 20s and 30s. It has lost its shine now.

GreenGodiva · 21/02/2026 14:42

I’m doing two foreign trips and one uk. First one is a week in a Eurocamp in June in the south of France. Working out at £130pp including flights and transfers and it’s two sisters and 5 niblings/griblings.

then we are doing a sporting event in July. 3 adults and 3 kids. Electric hook up Camping right in the action, and front row 4 day premium tickets. £1k pp.

then me and my DH are doing a 2 week cruise in December. £940pp.

sounds a lot and the sporting event is very much a one off. Although technically it’s the 2nd year in a row we are going Blush . I love it but it doesn’t represent good value for money in comparison to the foreign holidays we have.
