Anyone going away abroad this year?

As some people I know are and can afford to go weeks travelling and then others are just staying in the UK, or doing nothing at all.

What are you guys all up to?

OP posts:

I said it’s average for young people. Sure some earn higher but many earn min wage.
Not everyone is a graduate.

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:24

@landlordhell we don’t even know the OP’s age!!! And like I said it doesn’t even matter, the context is salary vs ability to go abroad, not salary vs age!

We are always pretty late to book. Im always amazed when people had a series of things booked for the year .But that’s obviously their priority. I like to see how I feel nearer the time.

i am always amazed that people can spare so much time off. I get it if they are wealthy and retired, but if you work full time and only have 5 weeks annual leave, it’s impossible. And when do they do all the other jobs needed - we always seem to spend time catching up with the garden, house repairs etc.

letshavetea · 22/02/2026 09:36

Barbados in two weeks time for 16 nights. Italy in July for 9 nights and then again in September for 10 nights. Plus a week with family in the UK in September. Will probably book something for November as well. I always book ahead in the BA sale. The Barbados flights are using a companion voucher and Avios. We’re retired and have been able to afford more since paying off our mortgage.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/02/2026 09:37

Germany in April, Poland in September and Cyprus at Christmas.

Squirrelchops1 · 22/02/2026 09:38

Those asking about annual leave. Here's an example. If you've worked 5 plus years for a local authority, annual leave is about 32 days. You can then buy 10. So 42 days leave not counting bank holidays! I used to know lots of people who had this leave entitlement.

CanYouHearYourself · 22/02/2026 09:38

UK at Easter then the states for nearly a month in the summer. I'm aware of how lucky we are to afford that.

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:43

@Squirrelchops1plus if you work flexibly that could be up to an extra 3 days off a month depending on your policy. I compress my hours which essentially gives me an extra 24 days off a year on top of my 30 days and then BH on top of that.

cinnamongirl123 · 22/02/2026 09:43

OP you’ve asked this question on Mumsnet - which has a well-known middle-class predominance, so far more respondents will be going on gorgeous holidays abroad than in the general population.
I am extremely jealous in awe of anyone who can afford to do so.

That's very true.
I'm now in civil service and we dont have annual leave purchase scheme but we can rack up greater flexi, up to a week so use that instead.

Oh that’s a shame, all the departments I’ve been in have AL purchase schemes, one brought it in while I was employed there, so yours could too one day.

I'm campaigning for it lol

HeNeedsRehab · 22/02/2026 09:55

Thank you for those that responded to my question about AL, it’s actually very interesting about local authorities. I’ve only ever worked private with a maximum of 32 days holiday possible. 10 extra days on top of that would be amazing!

MightyGoldBear · 22/02/2026 10:00

We do one holiday in the UK a year. This year it's wales.

Haven't been abroad since 2012 it's just so so expensive. I am determined to do it one year though I really want my children to experience it at least once.
Already live pretty frugal no thrills cheap lifestyle. We do priotise our home as that's where we spend our life. Plus children with additional needs travelling isn't easy.
I reckon It will probably take a good 3 to 5 years of me saving to afford abroad though.

socks1107 · 22/02/2026 10:12

Tenerife, Spain and Croatia booked. Will look at a winter city break for November at some point

You said it yourself- 5 weeks is a long time. When we book breaks they are usually shorter than a week 2/3 nights mostly. 5 nights for NYC as further and loads to see. We don’t do beach holidays since kids grown up. We like to see cities and walk.

Try a French campsite( or Spain if you don’t mind a longer drive)- they do caravans and lodges too so not just tents. Our now adult chn say they were their favourite summer holidays. Really good value. Try Canvas/ Eurocamp. We found it cheaper to book direct with the sites though.

This. I'm one of the few people on mumsnet who is on a low income. I do prioritise a holiday. We can only do it once a year though, on a tightish budget. This year, 4 nights in Rome. I've only left Europe once when I was 19. So it's always just Europe, due to the cost. We dont spend money on beauty products, hair cuts, smoke or go out for fancy meals(except when on holiday!) . This is what we use our treat money for.

wendywoopywoo222 · 22/02/2026 10:40

i love having holidays to look forward too.

April. Long weekend away with girl freinds in the purbecks. .
May. A week in Kos with partner
June. Cruising with freinds out of Southampton.
July. Two camper van festivals on my own.
August. Camping on the south coast with around 15 family and freinds
still planning the rest of the year.

TheToteBagLady · 22/02/2026 10:50

Italy for a week in June
A weekend in Ireland in august
A weekend in a German city in December

We’ve gone to Mallorca every year for the past number of years, so looking forward to a change

Lemonade2011 · 22/02/2026 11:06

We might do a weekend in the north of Scotland, possibly a week there with kids in summer - then Florida for 3 weeks in October. We are really quite frugal during the year, currently having a no spend 2026 so saving quite a bit. Only thing we put money aside for is home improvements and holiday kids happy at home or day trips, we have season tickets for the safari park locally.

mamaduckbone · 22/02/2026 13:09

Valencia at Easter. Nothing booked for summer yet - we’re waiting on ds1 sorting an internship.

Shadeflower · 22/02/2026 13:11

We're in Spain ATM. V. Cheap flights, small backpack only, really good food in local (not touristy) restaurants. Museums, Castle etc cheap or free entry, beautiful weather. I reckon a week will have cost us less than £400 all in.

Netcurtainnelly · 22/02/2026 13:15

We will be going away when I get round to biking something. These delays at airports with the new passport rules have been putting me off.
