Anyone going away abroad this year?

As some people I know are and can afford to go weeks travelling and then others are just staying in the UK, or doing nothing at all.

What are you guys all up to?

Nothing booked yet but last year we did Liverpool, Malaga and Devon and Southwold. We like short breaks generally as kids grown up and don’t usually join us. Malaga was quite cheap to go and eat/ drink. Same with Seville and Barcelona.

Aromaticcandles · 21/02/2026 22:27

Hopefully a May half term holiday to somewhere warm and a couple of long weekends in the countryside. Have to pay the high prices with DC at school.amd look forward to the day we don't have to! Xx

Racingadmin · 21/02/2026 22:29

3 weeks travelling around Colorado in July for our silver wedding anniversary and hopefully a Maldives trip in November if we can find a bargain

Robina3000 · 21/02/2026 22:30

We are going for 10 days to New York in July, in August 10 days in central Europe visiting family, we will also book something for October. I have a big birthday in 2027 and I would like us all to go to either to Japan or South Korea, so I do not want to spend much more this year.

How does everyone afford it?! 🤔 I thought we had a cost of living crisis?! Me and my girlfriend can only afford a trip abroad for one week a year and we’re on 65K before tax income per year.

We’re old and no longer have a mortgage or young DC. In our 30s and 40s we camped.

Rituelec · 21/02/2026 22:37

With the family:

A week in Cornwall
Week in Wales
3 days in Dorset
2 days in the peaks

Then have a few trips with friends (Edinburgh, and London).

And days out I guess.

whiteroseredrose · 21/02/2026 22:37

Big year this year as we’re on the countdown to retirement and will then get a dog. So Jordan, Vienna, Scotland and South Africa. And maybe a beer run to Belgium.

Be prepared to hear about people who have the time and money to go on several holidays a year. I don’t think it will make you feel better. They must also have an awful lot of free time to book and research the holidays. I am not sure you really want to read the answers….

BauhausOfEliott · 22/02/2026 00:26

We’re going on a safari in Namibia

We are always pretty late to book. Im always amazed when people had a series of things booked for the year .But that’s obviously their priority. I like to see how I feel nearer the time.

Big trip this year by train to Italy with a stop off in Paris as dp is turning 60. We’re spending a literal fortune on it. Dp has planned this trip for a long time and then my godmother died and left us the kind of inheritance that pays for one major holiday, which is an amazing gift.

We are older is the short answer on why we can afford it. Kids all moved out and earning well, lower housing costs. But you only have to look round this country to see that we are a rich society still - vast shiny cars everywhere, people out spending money at every turn. Which is very hard on those not doing so well and those paying sky high childcare and housing costs.

I would say that I spent decades counting every single penny, cutting my own hair, lucky to do a long weekend camping with ds and dp. And they were good years all the same. But I prefer having money…

BiscoffCheesecakes · 22/02/2026 08:18

We’re on a lot more than that. You have a below average income each (assuming it’s evenly earned) so it’s not unusual if you are below average in luxury spend. I’m sure your time will come when you progress in your work, we didn’t always go away as much as we do now.

PermanentTemporary · 22/02/2026 08:41

Also to be fair OP you are describing one trip abroad every year. That’s pretty good isn’t it?

HeNeedsRehab · 22/02/2026 08:58

I’m always more surprised at how much annual leave people have! Or perhaps a lot are retired?

Anyway we’ve got the Easter weekend booked up to go to Suffolk and a week in Italy for the summer so far. Trying to be creative with annual leave to get away somewhere in May. We like travelling and exposing our kids to lots of experiences (not necessarily expensive ones, just a wide range) but we’re lucky enough to earn decent money to be able to do this

Hardly below average for young people!

landlordhell · 22/02/2026 09:02

OP you need to be creative with the type of holiday. We prefer a few shorter 2/3 night breaks to cities. Honestly Spanish cities are great for culture, heat and cost of eating and drinking. Seville in spring was great( too hot in summer) and Barcelona has a fab beach plus city. Ditto Malaga.
France is great for empty beaches and you can camp so well there. We did lots of that with our DC. We also did lots of UK breaks. What type of thing are you after?

I don’t know how old they are? But their age is irrelevant for the ask, they have a lower income so will have less holidays, yes their age could be a contributing factor, but doesn’t change the outcome.

£30k is not low wage it’s average.

mel78y5 · 22/02/2026 09:09

@landlordhellstatistically it is below average. It is entry level in career streams and not much more than minimum wage. My point stands that you can’t expect to have a below average (or even average) salary, and wonder why you’re not going abroad an above average amount of times.

£30k is not entry level. I had young adult dc and I can tell you that may grads start would be happy to get that. But they earn £60k plus together and that is plenty to get away if they are savvy.

I was in Czechia last weekend. Flights were £18. Hotel was glorious and cost £65 a night. Eating out is half the price of uk.

I hire graduates, in the public sector. It is entry level. I would be happy if my kids started on that wage too, it doesn’t miraculously make it above average. Surely you are getting my point? The OP is not making big bucks and cant be expecting to go abroad multiple times? It’s not an insult, if anything it’s reassurance they’re not doing something wrong!
