As some people I know are and can afford to go weeks travelling and then others are just staying in the UK, or doing nothing at all.

What are you guys all up to?

How does everyone afford it?! 🤔 I thought we had a cost of living crisis?! Me and my girlfriend can only afford a trip abroad for one week a year and we’re on 65K before tax income per year.

It depends where you live and what your outgoings are surely?

£65K in Grimsby goes quite a bit further than £65K in Chelsea

I'm on £15k less than you and a single mum, but I've scrimped for the last 9 months so we can go and celebrate. I can't wait. 🤗

DS1 is doing his GCSEs this year. As soon as they are finished he and I go to Australia to see his grandparents. Then dh and ds2 will join us two weeks later as they have some shared hobby stuff they will do and then come to us. We will spend half the time with my family and half doing a road trip. I’ve been saving for two years and can’t wait! 5 weeks away total.

Simonjt · 21/02/2026 14:47

Yes, we’re going to the UK for a week starting tomorrow (our equivalent of halfterm is next week). Over easter we’re going to do at least two German cities, we haven’t decided which ones yet.

We haven’t booked a holiday during summer yet, but we’re thinking of doing a driving holiday in Norway.

Cost of living crisis doesn’t always affect everyone to the same extent.

We’ve just done 2 weeks in Orlando at the start of January, 1 family member is travelling to vegas before the summer but we won’t be having another abroad holiday this year after that

We don’t earn anything like you do. Maybe £44k a year but cost of living is low for us. £248 mortgage and utilities/bills are £280. But I also cook from scratch, don’t buy anything furniture wise new if I can help it, do my own diy and up cycling, save everything I can and literally budget £130 a month towards cruises and £70 a month towards budget holiday breaks like eurocamp or Ryanair Greece/turkey/city breaks. We don’t do luxury £1500+pp pw all inclusive type stuff and so my budget goes much further. There is just me, DH and a 17yo dd left at home so cheaper than it was when I had 4 kids at home but even then we did a cheap eurocamp every year, a city break, and a cheap Tunisian or Turkish AI every other year.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 21/02/2026 14:56

I absolutely plan to, as I need to see sun this year (our last proper holiday was 2017). And I will only have 2 weeks mid-August to play with. But I have the savings to do this. By “sun”, I mean somewhere in Europe, likely self catering, where I can walk and swim and unwind in sunshine but not extreme heat.

humptydumptyfelloff · 21/02/2026 14:58

Greece in July and really hoping I manage to get us a short break to Barcelona end of September.

next year is Italy and then a quick cheapy to Balearics somewhere

I’m going to Poland tomorrow, a caravan in Northumberland in two weeks. Malaga two weeks later. Six weeks in France and Spain from May. Cornwall in September and Greece in October

My guess is you’ll need the most spending money in Northumberland……eating out can be a rip off!

I’ve been to Spain twice already this year. We just do short breaks. It was cheaper than a weekend in London! Generally do Airbnb, cheap Ryanair flights with no extra bags, only eat out when we really want to, otherwise it’s supermarket picnics. Very affordable.

Sounds like me and my sister.. going to Lanzarote in two weeks..

But there is little point asking this question without further context. You don’t know what everyone’s income is, how much they pay for rent or morgage, whethether they have savings etc so you can’t really compare yourself with a stranger just typing “I am going to Mallorca in May”

Fizbosshoes · 21/02/2026 15:05

Were hoping to go away beginning of July, planning to get it booked this weekend. DS is doing GCSEs so we're going a bit earlier than we normally would. It is marginally cheaper but not much

itsthetea · 21/02/2026 15:07

Cost of living crisis means people have less spending power than they used to on average

it doesn’t say that everyone is permanently skint
it doesn’t say how people prioritise what they have to different uses

Getting hair done 8 times a year at £150 ( seen often on here ) is 1.2k towards a holiday

2 weeks in Tuscany is less than that per person - it’s clear how priorities matter

placemats · 21/02/2026 15:11

We're going to Rome and Taormina.

tooloololoo · 21/02/2026 15:28

What does SC mean @EnglishBreakfastTea1?

Self Catering?

RomeoRivers · 21/02/2026 15:36

We’re going to the Dominican Republic for Easter, Rhodes for May half term and camping in Yorkshire in August.

You book super early, do a lot of comparisons, and with my TA you can pay monthly or pay bits off when you can.

SpikeyHousePlant · 21/02/2026 15:56

Lots of uk camping breaks between april- sept.
4 days in youth hostel Derbyshire for me and youngest child.
7 days hiking in Cumbria for me alone
7 nights Cyprus whole family

plus couple weekends away for me and DH.

Figgygal · 21/02/2026 16:01

I'm going to Australia for a special trip which mean there's no family holiday this year other than in the UK unless a bonus comes my way unexpectedly

OtherS · 21/02/2026 16:17

Supposed to be going to NYC in May, but my morals keep nagging me... I have until end March to decide - and it's such an amazing deal I doubt I'll get anything like it again. But then... do I really want to go to America. I would have to hide it from everyone I know, which does make me think it's maybe not something I should be doing!

Am going to Singapore, Bali and Komodo in the autumn though. Think my morals are comfortable with that, though maybe not my bank balance.

Was supposed to be going to Rome next week too, but sudden house move means that's not very likely. Which is annoying as I can't get refund on flights.

merryhouse · 21/02/2026 16:31

We're going to Rome for 5 days. Got a bargain on a hotel that wants some reviews for its new branch 😀and flying with a mildly-cheap airline not paying extra for hold luggage.

I've not left the country since 1999 and that was Dublin. Not been on a plane since honeymoon in 1992.

Our income is around £2k a month each (me lowly job, H early-retirement DB work pension). Most of the time we limit our spending to within one of those. We paid off our mortgage a while back and have paid for recent home improvements/maintenance out of his lump sum payment. Due to a high-5-figure inheritance we're not currently worrying too much about Making Savings.

MissAmbrosia · 21/02/2026 16:35

I'm going to Lisbon for work on Monday. Week in Seville booked for May, Lisbon with friends in October (not work). Want to plan an Italy trip at some point (maybe Sept) but we just bought a house in UK (currently abroad) and not sure exactly when we will move, so I need to keep holiday days for trips there.

aintnospringchicken · 21/02/2026 16:46

Going to Lanzarote next month, few days in the Cotswolds then to Bath for a few days in June,Rhine river cruise in September.
Might have a couple of long weekends away in the UK too.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 21/02/2026 16:49

Antigua at Easter then Kos in August
