As some people I know are and can afford to go weeks travelling and then others are just staying in the UK, or doing nothing at all.

What are you guys all up to?

How does everyone afford it?! 🤔 I thought we had a cost of living crisis?! Me and my girlfriend can only afford a trip abroad for one week a year and we’re on 65K before tax income per year.

Combined salary or each?
Simple answer is that people earn more and/or spend less on other things!

BubbleFree · 21/02/2026 16:52

We were in Thailand in January, we’re going to Cyprus in May, Italy in July, Mexico in September and back to Thailand in January 27.

Edited to add everyone’s circumstances are different.

@Benny91

DIY no packages jumping on easy jet flights the moment they are released , finding beautiful but cheaper accmd...working hard to find deals.

Each month we put aside a budget for our holidays and everything else .

JimsBeam · 21/02/2026 17:21

We are going to Spain for a week just a beach all inclusive at the end of May. Our kids get two weeks for May half term which is a godsend because the second week holidays are a lot cheaper. Me and DH have a weekend in Rome in June as well for his big birthday. Nothing else planned bar that’s as we are hoping to move this year so are trying to be more mindful with spending. We may try get away in October half term if we have moved by then but it will be a last minute thing if we do!

How do i do it, i live cheap no kids and im single.

sundayvibeswig22 · 21/02/2026 17:29

Weve been to New York this year, have canaries booked at Easter and turkey in July. Then a few London city breaks (it’s a flight away for us) and a cottage near the beach.
dh and I earn well enough and have 1dc. I’m very good at finding good deals also

Myeyeisnotokay · 21/02/2026 17:54

We had a 4 night UK holiday this half term.
We have a weekend away at Legoland booked for march, and another UK weekend break in July. We couldn't afford an abroad holiday this February!
Last year we did one abroad holiday for 10 days, and one UK holiday for a week on the east coast.
We are planning to do Disney Orlando at some point but we will have to save up for a couple of years!

Edited to add - all in school holidays, so it's a lot less affordable. Previously we'd have done at least 2 abroad holidays and some other breaks in between.

NotMyCircusNotMyProblem · 21/02/2026 19:48

We’re going to Crete in June, Tenerife in September and Thailand for Christmas. Both semi retired, no kids and mortgage paid off. Holidays is what we do.

Cat1504 · 21/02/2026 19:52

Already been to Majorca …going Canada in March..,,Croatia in May….France in July…,Spain in august…,.Croatia again in September…,Poland in November….I’m semi retired so we go all out on holidays now as I don’t know how long I will be fit for ….I’m 61 now

MonsterMamaJam · 21/02/2026 19:54

Lanzarote in July for a week in a hired villa.
First foreign holiday in six years and we are so excited. First time on a plane for my youngest

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 21/02/2026 19:58

10 days in tenerife in July. Costing a small fortune (for us) as its us and 3 older teens and we have gone 4* AI, but its likely to be one of our final family holidays now the kids are on the verge of adulthood so wanted to splash out.

Affording it wise, I'm saving as much as humanly possible every month and any remainder will go on a 0% credit card. But my plan is to have saved 95% if not 100%.

We only just started abroad holidays in the last couple of years, never could have afforded it before but both DH and I have had promotions at work.

Go on cheap holidays...

You can fly to cologne for around £60 return, stay in a premier inn or something cheaper.

I am taking 5 people to France in may half term by car. It's about £800 with travel. Just hiring a holiday home is £1200+ Without even getting there...

We’re going to Kenya for 3 weeks but the cost is just the flights as staying with family.

We are away (UK) atm - staying in a family members holiday home. And will do the same at Easter. We have a few weekends camping planned too. I know we’re fortunate.

Flingotheflamingo · 21/02/2026 21:43

@Benny91£65k before tax for household income isn’t an awful lot.

We earn double that and holiday around 6 times a year. My husband and I are fond of Ryanair/Easyjet and a cheap city break - but we always go for 4*+ when we have the children with us (around 3 times per year.)

We prioritise holidays. We work hard and enjoy the change of scenery. We don’t appreciate meals out at home, and don’t waste money day to day.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 21/02/2026 21:56

I’m in malta this week for hal term. I am
going to Italy in May half term. I am going to Hong Kong for 2 weeks in November.

SnowfallSnowball · 21/02/2026 21:57

I went to Thailand in Jan, going to Greece in July and then Japan in November.

I tend to book my holidays many months in advance, pay a deposit and save throughout the year.

RedRec · 21/02/2026 21:59

Just got back from Lanzarote. My first ever winter sun holiday. Took a day trip on the ferry to Fuerteventura and fell in love with it so have just, tonight, booked a week there in June.

JohnWickAteMyHamster · 21/02/2026 22:03

We've done Spain this half term and planning Belgium in the summer, maybe France or Germany in October.
Will do a week in the UK somewhere in summer too - with adult kids and possibly their partners.
I'm trying to persuade DH we should go away for Xmas but he isn't convinced 😆

EwwSprouts · 21/02/2026 22:06

Going to Malta for 4 nights sunshine, food & history. Nothing else booked but will hopefully have a week in the UK in the autumn.

BrendaSmall · 21/02/2026 22:07

We’ve booked and paid for 3 of our joint holidays this year already, just got 1 left to book and pay for, can’t decide where to go yet!
Next year we’re going on a big trip and we’ve paid the deposit on that as it gets booked very quickly!
My husband has a couple of weeks away for his hobby with friends and I go away too with my friends
I refuse to have a holiday in the uk!

FettleOfKish · 21/02/2026 22:09

Off to DH’s home country for a week, 3 days in a lovely Airbnb in France, DH is off to a wedding in Spain and depending on remaining leave and money we might get a week in Portugal in October (the flights are free through my work so hopefully we can keep costs low). Just about to take on a much bigger mortgage though so doing it now while we can.

Ilovelurchers · 21/02/2026 22:16

I'm going to Berlin for five nights with my teenage daughter. Cheap flights, cheap accommodation - it's not costing us much more than our usual UK break. In fact we will hopefully be able to afford a few nights somewhere in the UK by the seaside too.

Travel doesn't have to be hugely expensive, depends how you do it.

I personally think people should minimise how often they fly, due to environmental impact. So I don't think it's a bad thing if people limit themselves to one trip abroad per year, or possible one every two years.

When DD was too young to really appreciate foreign travel I just took her camping or to the seaside here. But now she is older I do want to give her some opportunities to experice other places and other cultures. We went to Amsterdam for a few nights last summer which was wonderful.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 21/02/2026 22:18

I’m going abroad 3 times this year. Plus I have events booked such as theatre trips.
Both dh and I work full time.
