Expressions MN should ban.

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:14

There are certain expressions posters frequently use on MN which just absolutely infuriate me.

"Pearl clutching " is one of these
Accusing posters who hold a different opinion of being a " pearl clutcher" is just a cheap, snearing jibe calculated to try to make someone look ridiculous and is tantamount to bullying. Imo of course.

Btw I know it's not feasible to ban but I wish people would think before they trot out this phrase which is just calculated to be unpleasant rather than adding anything to a discussion.

Does any one else have any expressions which MN posters use frequently which annoy them?

Anything that starts with a "D"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry....D🤣

liamharha · 13/02/2026 11:15

Wits end 🙄

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 13/02/2026 11:18

“Gently OP…”
”Kindly OP…”

SkyPanel · 13/02/2026 11:19

"You do know that"

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:25

Today's challenge should be to compose a post made up entirely of the phrases pp love to hate mentioned in this thread.
Then we can all be annoyed simultaneously.

Grim.
Everything is "grim".
I agree with you about "pearl clutching". It's so sexist and ageist.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 13/02/2026 11:27

“Boils my piss”.

Although thankfully that one seems to have gone out of fashion a bit

Yeah, that's a really horrible one.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 11:29

"Reach out".

Unless you're one of the Four Tops, you have no business suggesting this.

Snootsnoot · 13/02/2026 11:29

"Hence why..." just hence. AI use has made this word very popular.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 11:30

"I didn't want to read and run".

Well aren't you wonderful, sparing the OP a few crumbs of your time and letting us all know it 🙄

Post or don't post. No-one knows whether you've read it or not.

That's brilliant!

Why are we constantly policing what women say?

xOlive · 13/02/2026 11:35

Quoting a sentence a PP put with “…Really?” at the end.
Arrogant fuckers.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 13/02/2026 11:36

Boiling piss
The row of ducks
Misogynist
Narcisist

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/02/2026 11:36

I'd love it if everyone could stop popping. Exceptions:

  • champagne
  • weasels
  • Hugh Grant singing pop goes my heart
TittyGajillions · 13/02/2026 11:36

Kindly OP, I didn't want to read and run because I felt that would be grim and vile, have you thought about reaching out to someone about your anxiety?

SteelMaiden · 13/02/2026 11:38

something about the cool girls not wanting to be a sheep (because that jacket is fucking ugly and I dont like it - not because its cool so say that, it is ugly!)

NotThatSerious · 13/02/2026 11:38

DDog!

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:38

Oh well done @TittyGajillions

’Reach out’ is just Northern American and last I checked people from around the world are allowed to post on here.

I actually get annoyed by people who try to mock the use of words/ phrases that they understand perfectly well. It is just another way of showing snobbery.

Oreosareawful · 13/02/2026 11:40

Give your head a wobble OP!

Overtheatlantic · 13/02/2026 11:41

“Try reading the thread”

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:41

NotThatSerious · 13/02/2026 11:38

DDog!

Sorry I must disagree. I actually love DDog. And DCat.

I do dislike DH and DP though because they usually definitely aren't.

I really hate the ‘tell me you’ve never done/had etc’ without ‘telling me you’ve never done/had etc’ expression. So patronising.
