Expressions MN should ban.

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:14

There are certain expressions posters frequently use on MN which just absolutely infuriate me.

"Pearl clutching " is one of these
Accusing posters who hold a different opinion of being a " pearl clutcher" is just a cheap, snearing jibe calculated to try to make someone look ridiculous and is tantamount to bullying. Imo of course.

Btw I know it's not feasible to ban but I wish people would think before they trot out this phrase which is just calculated to be unpleasant rather than adding anything to a discussion.

Does any one else have any expressions which MN posters use frequently which annoy them?

Nail on head.

Or, even worse:

Nail. On. Head.

Seedlingsparrow · 13/02/2026 11:43

'Mummy's boy', an opportunity to have a go/blame older women, for anything perceived wrong with a man.

fruitpress100 · 13/02/2026 11:43

"Let's ban people from saying....." - we might as well call each other "comrade" at this point.

Tbf, I think "vile" is overused.

Comparison is the thief of joy. What a load of tripe. Usually accompanied by a statement that positively compares the OP to something negative the person is complaining about, ‘Comparison is the thief of joy, she probably has little going on in her life and that’s why she has an immaculate home, where as you are so busy and loved’.

First post gets it

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/02/2026 11:44

Did you mean to be so rude?

Well yes I did you dick head, otherwise I wouldn’t have said it.

MyThreeWords · 13/02/2026 11:45

Also,
Bring back the laugh emoticon

This has been said so often now that instead of asking MNHQ for a laugh emoticon we should be asking them for a Bring back the laugh emoticon emoticon.

SettingSunStillness · 13/02/2026 11:45

First post nails it

MrsPenelopeBridgerton · 13/02/2026 11:45

Jesus wept 😤 😤

I can’t read the post any further if someone has written that as it makes me cringe so badly.

Oh I totally agree with this.

Why isn't the BBC covering this/Why is the BBC covering this so obsessively

(often said about one and the same issue)

I've started thinking "mommy's boy" is actually quite an endearing term about a close relationship with a nice well behaved and well brought up man. Maybe cos I have a DS....

Danikm151 · 13/02/2026 11:49

DH when you’re talking about divorce. He’s not your darling!

Yes it's a really horrible expression.
I dislike it when used irl too.

I've actually never heard any one irl use the expression " pearl clutching". Just seen it on MN.

Probably meaning Dick head Husband at that point.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 13/02/2026 11:50

‘First post nails it’ feels like it’s used on every bloody thread.

Also the abbreviations become ridiculous when you are typing Ddog… etc

Pearl clutchers and forelock tuggers are top of my list.

If I read reaching out I think perhaps they are American.

“And what did [the offending person] say when you confronted them, OP?”

SteelMaiden · 13/02/2026 11:52

discuss

forgetitplease · 13/02/2026 11:53

CF.

I don't care about the word c**t and I'm editing it out simply because I'm not sure if you're allowed to use it on here. I use the word now and then so it's not that I'm judging people who use it.

I just find the whole "CF" thing annoying. It feels like the person wants to be cool by using it. Idk if it's just me, but whenever I see that it distracts me every time.

Gosh you sound like hard work.
