Expressions MN should ban.

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:14

There are certain expressions posters frequently use on MN which just absolutely infuriate me.

"Pearl clutching " is one of these
Accusing posters who hold a different opinion of being a " pearl clutcher" is just a cheap, snearing jibe calculated to try to make someone look ridiculous and is tantamount to bullying. Imo of course.

Btw I know it's not feasible to ban but I wish people would think before they trot out this phrase which is just calculated to be unpleasant rather than adding anything to a discussion.

Does any one else have any expressions which MN posters use frequently which annoy them?

I've recently seen "sweet summer child" and had to Google it.
Why not just say naive?

I can’t remember where I read it but apparently it’s that Balonz was a running joke on a different forum and someone from that forum came over here probably trolling given her other kid was allegedly called Data

That would make sense!

Daijoubudesu · 13/02/2026 14:56

"I'm in absolute bits" "crying and shaking" all day about something really minor.

Also "picky bits"

Mingspingpongball · 13/02/2026 15:00

The pot is empty - when referring to welfare benefits usually. There is no “pot” and that’s really not how government’s make decisions about spending (oh look, the Defence pot is empty, no more defence money so let’s sack the army and navy etc”.

The overstatement and overused claim that someone is “devastated” by (usually a friendship ending or a fairly new relationship ending). Though I don’t think it needs to be banned to be fair.

Why are we constantly policing what women say?

Are you suggesting that women shouldn't be allowed to criticise other women just because they are women?

LetMeGoogleThat · 13/02/2026 15:11

This has to be a reverse. I hate that one!

"Reach out".

Unless you're one of the Four Tops, you have no business suggesting this.

😂

'Sweet summer child' is annoying.

DD can be daughter or dad and especially confusing when both meanings are used in the same post as in, DD's DDog pissed on DDs duvet then DD2 sat on it damaging DSD's dress and now DD is upset that DD can't control DDog and screamed. I think it is DD's fault but DD shouldn't have got angry AIBU?

Same goes for DS (son and sister)

Anndalouzier · 13/02/2026 15:21

I don't understand what a sweet summer child is

“And what did [the offending person] say when you confronted them, OP?”

Agree, so patronising!

tuvamoodyson · 13/02/2026 15:39

I never read any comment starting with ‘Er…’

NippyNinjaCrab · 13/02/2026 15:41

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 11:30

"I didn't want to read and run".

Well aren't you wonderful, sparing the OP a few crumbs of your time and letting us all know it 🙄

Post or don't post. No-one knows whether you've read it or not.

This is the most annoying one for me!

Tillygan60 · 13/02/2026 15:45

I hate " are you ok?", which I always imagine being said in a very patronizing way, as if the poster has written something completely insane

Are you suggesting that women shouldn't be allowed to criticise other women just because they are women?

Are you trying to get excused for having low comprehension skills just because you’re a woman?

sammylady37 · 13/02/2026 16:51

‘Boils my piss’ and ‘lost my shit’
Both are utterly repulsive, vulgar phrases.

MaidOfSteel · 13/02/2026 17:02

HTH.

It’s usually meant in a patronising or sarcastic manner.

Luluissleeping · 13/02/2026 18:04

Definitely "use your words."
Overused on here.

Why are we constantly policing what women say?

yes, exactly
the other day, under old name here I posted on a thread: there is always one.
it was deleted
ten minutes was reading another thread and someone elses posted this same thing: there is always one - and hers did not get deleted.

genesis92 · 13/02/2026 18:24

“Critical thinking”

PearlClutzsche · 13/02/2026 18:51

"It's an invitation, not a summons" usually about a wedding that may be awkward to attend.

This could only be said by someone with absolutely no clue about family or friendship dynamics and societal expectations; someone whose lack of attendance would go unnoticed and uncared about.

PlumDeNomNomNom · 13/02/2026 16:16

I beg your pardon?
