Expressions MN should ban.

There are certain expressions posters frequently use on MN which just absolutely infuriate me.

"Pearl clutching " is one of these
Accusing posters who hold a different opinion of being a " pearl clutcher" is just a cheap, snearing jibe calculated to try to make someone look ridiculous and is tantamount to bullying. Imo of course.

Btw I know it's not feasible to ban but I wish people would think before they trot out this phrase which is just calculated to be unpleasant rather than adding anything to a discussion.

Does any one else have any expressions which MN posters use frequently which annoy them?

Have you thought about a jumpsuit?

Also the the obsession with the word boundaries 😩

Agree ! Cannot stand that word unless talking about land boundaries.
So patronising, particularly when people are moaning about parents and in-laws .

blooooooor · 13/02/2026 13:56

„Divorce him immediately”

That's just Scottish vernacular.
There's nothing wrong with it.

Has anyone got their ducks in a row yet?

’Reach out’ is just Northern American and last I checked people from around the world are allowed to post on here.

And the last time I checked people were allowed to say they find it irritating, but thanks for the geographical information 🤣🤣

I didn’t say people are not allowed to be irritated but wanted to give the most common reason as to why someone would be using that phrase. It’s different to ‘pearl clutching’ and the rest the thread started with, as it wouldn't be used to patronise or offend.

Sorry if you felt attacked by my attempt to defend ‘the other side’.

CoolFineDoneWicked · 13/02/2026 14:03

I love / hate the self-important way some MNers write "my thoughts are with [x]" when on a gossipy thread about some tragedy. Unless you're the prime minister, no-one cares love. It's fine to rubber neck without pretending you're in solemn contemplation about the cruelty of life.

🤣🤣🤣 Yeah I'm shaking and sobbing at that awful attack!

But on a serious note, in the UK I'd say the most common reasons are both corporate and therapy speak.

Both incredibly annoying to many people.

And since this thread is about annoying things people post...

Expect a few of them jumping on this, thanking you for the linguistics lesson, and letting you know they are still allowed to be irritated by it.

Did we ever find out if it was just a misspelling of a ordinary name that she'd overheard and didn't know the proper spelling?
Although I can't figure out what ordinary name that would be.....

I think she implied she thought it was an ordinary name 🤔

It's always peri. Except when it is autism.

Or dementia

PearlClutzsche · 13/02/2026 14:14

Many of the older tiresome phrases on MN are on the dwindle though, thankfully... you don't see
"Wind your neck in"
"Howling!"
"Spat my coffee out"
"Vile"
or the repulsive "Boils my piss" quite so often now.

Agree with many of the above, especially the "Kindly" and "Gently" so beloved of patronising twats.

Or dementia

Urgh yes- the minute anyone acts like an arsehole its always "be kind- they might be ND - or have dementia (if they are over age 40)

CloudPop · 13/02/2026 14:24

“Unclench”

chgaus · 13/02/2026 14:24

’Wear what you like!’ or ‘I wear whatever I’m comfortable in, who cares about fashion or style?’ In S&B when someone is specifically asking about the latest trend, wants to be styled a certain way, or going to an event and is not confident with choices.

So infuriating, isn't it?
My daughter had autism, but like most autistic people somehow manages not to be a mannerless wankshaft.

Yes, the implication is really insulting

Beekman · 13/02/2026 14:40

“Hooted” for laughed

Surely “ducks in a row” has to be in there, especially when the husband hasn’t definitely done anything wrong, let alone enough for a woman to upend her and the kids’ lives completely.

I think she implied she thought it was an ordinary name 🤔

I can’t remember where I read it but apparently it’s that Balonz was a running joke on a different forum and someone from that forum came over here probably trolling given her other kid was allegedly called Data
