Expressions MN should ban.

Expressionlessplease · 13/02/2026 11:14

There are certain expressions posters frequently use on MN which just absolutely infuriate me.

"Pearl clutching " is one of these
Accusing posters who hold a different opinion of being a " pearl clutcher" is just a cheap, snearing jibe calculated to try to make someone look ridiculous and is tantamount to bullying. Imo of course.

Btw I know it's not feasible to ban but I wish people would think before they trot out this phrase which is just calculated to be unpleasant rather than adding anything to a discussion.

Does any one else have any expressions which MN posters use frequently which annoy them?

Narcissist - just cause someone’s a dick doesn’t make them a narcissist.
Gas lighting - overused, again, being a dock is bad enough, we don’t have to incorrectly use descriptors.
Calling people who disagree with your stance ‘cool girls’.

Yes I agree with this one.

Also, íf you dig a bit deeper, the person is rarely an actual narcissist and the gaslighting is hardly ever gaslighting.

Don't know if you have noticed, but it gets into a whole new territory when they abbreviate narcissist to "narc". That's how often they use it! They wheel it out so regularly that it gets this treatment.

PhantomG · 13/02/2026 12:54

Well I've never see the Four Tops quote before and love it!

For me, it's people rolling their eyes and calling you a 'cool girl' because you don't agree with their opinion😖

Snootsnoot · 13/02/2026 12:56

Also clickbait titles
"Is it just me or do you..." (click to discover!)
Makes me feel like I have taken part in some hideous advertising scam where you click a link and get a virus.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 13/02/2026 13:00

Put your big girl pants on. Unhelpful to imply that someone in an awful situation is just being cowardly.

Quickly checks. Am definitely wearing big girl pants.

Damnloginpopup · 13/02/2026 13:02

SchnizelVonKrumm · 13/02/2026 12:48

Well it's pretty obvious that the poster means "has anyone [who is reading this and wouldn't mind replying] ever...?".

But you knew that, didn't you?

Yeah but it still makes me teeth itch.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 13/02/2026 13:03

Sorry. With or without the pass at kiss stuck on the end. Particularly when it's said after an incredibly bitchy sentence and is completely disingenuous.

OP: AIBU to be upset because my mum said she doesn't like my wedding dress. *Posts picture of said perfectly acceptable dress.

MN: Well to be fair your mum does have a point. I wouldn't be seen dead in that dress. In fact the last time I wore something that hideous was to my 5th birthday party. Wear it If you want but it screams mutton dressed as lamb to me and if I saw you in it I'd probably wonder If you are even mature enough to get married. Sorry x

Also "can't you just". Can't you just move house/get a divorce/find a grand down the sofa/learn to drive/homeschool the dc/start your own business OP?

motherofgodhaudyerwheesht · 13/02/2026 13:06

'Wins the Internet'

It really didn't. And it's not 2004.

I've started thinking "mommy's boy" is actually quite an endearing term about a close relationship with a nice well behaved and well brought up man. Maybe cos I have a DS....

No it's an insult about shit men who have their mum do their laundry and cook them meals and spoil them rotten so they don't think they have to do domestic chores. And then expect their female partner to treat them the way their mummy does.

I've never heard of meant as an insult against older women. It's the boy's fault more than the Mummy's? As he's a grown man who should refuse to be babied and mollycoddled.

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 13/02/2026 13:12

Sounds like they could be autistic/ADHD/ADD/ETC

MyThreeWords · 13/02/2026 13:13

But you knew that didn't you.

Such a dead-eyed hostile over-reach.

What is Balonz?

Years ago on a baby names thread the Op was asking for opnions on names
She has two ordinary names Sean and Daniel and then Balonz
Now whenever anyone's asks for names suggestions some comedian always suggests Balonz as though its the most hilarious thing ever

Eudaimonia11 · 13/02/2026 13:23

“Genuine question” is annoying me at the moment. I read it as “I’m a smug cow”.

As is “need a hand hold” - are you 5?! I never say anything because the OP is usually posting about something upsetting so it’s obviously not helpful to be a dick about one phrase they’ve used. I don’t know why they don’t just say “need some support”.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 13:24

finbow · 13/02/2026 11:40

’Reach out’ is just Northern American and last I checked people from around the world are allowed to post on here.

I actually get annoyed by people who try to mock the use of words/ phrases that they understand perfectly well. It is just another way of showing snobbery.

’Reach out’ is just Northern American and last I checked people from around the world are allowed to post on here.

And the last time I checked people were allowed to say they find it irritating, but thanks for the geographical information 🤣🤣

Dontcallmescarface · 13/02/2026 13:27

"You knew what you were getting onto", said to every stepmother who dares to post about an issue with the SC.

“Genuine question” is the only one on here so far that I actually use 😳

In my defence, I use it when I do actually want to know the answer to something but am aware that some people might think I mean to be snarky / sarcastic.

If there’s a better way to put this across I’m open to suggestions!

Is "cool girl" better or worse than "handmaiden" I wonder.

101jobs · 13/02/2026 13:36

”HTH”, I love a bit of sarcasm, but this is plain rude!

and

When a poster changes the a previous poster’s wording and types “I’ve corrected it for you”. Again, so rude! It’s basically the poster saying “I’m right and you’re wrong”. God forbid someone might have a different opinion.

Readytoplay · 13/02/2026 13:39

‘Every. Single. Time.’ - notice this a fair bit on here. It’s not the actual phrase but the way in which the full stops are used. I just find it an arsey way of trying to emphasise a particular point, where most people would just even put it in italics, bold, or capitals. I find people that do this think they are being sophisticated, which is quite the irony given that it's not at all grammatically correct 🫤

Kids - my issue with this one isn't the actual word, but often the context is what really winds me up. I often notice that the informal ‘Kids’ are more likely to be used in connection to a group of children they see as different/other (most often SE/ND), yet the typical group of children (again most often neurologically) are described as the formal ‘children’. I find this really quite problematic as by using the formal for the majority and the informal for the minority is that it subtly implies that the minority are not as worthy and therefore don’t deserve the formal descriptive.

‘AIBU to ask what your favourite XYZ is?’ - yes you are, because this should be placed in Chat rather than AIBU. Chat still gets a lot of traffic so don’t understand why people don’t post theirs instead of badly appropriating your thread to fit into AIBU.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 11:30

"I didn't want to read and run".

Well aren't you wonderful, sparing the OP a few crumbs of your time and letting us all know it 🙄

Post or don't post. No-one knows whether you've read it or not.

Ha, agree with this one! It always sounds a bit like: “Oh, poor you, no one else is replying, so I guess I’ll have to do it”.
Not sure why people say it, especially if they then go on to write a perfectly normal post that wouldn’t have needed a special prelude.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 13/02/2026 13:40

Oh yes, the 'cool wives' thing is just a way to put women down for being ok with different things to the OP.

What about 'da menz?' is another annoying one.

TheIceBear · 13/02/2026 13:43

What age are you ? Could it possibly be the start of peri OP?

Did we ever find out if it was just a misspelling of a ordinary name that she'd overheard and didn't know the proper spelling?
Although I can't figure out what ordinary name that would be.....

Lifelover16 · 13/02/2026 13:50

”and yet here we are “
Overuse of cod psychology - boundaries, gas lighting, narcissist
”howling”
“educate yourself”

TheIceBear · 13/02/2026 13:43

It's always peri. Except when it is autism.

Can you use it as a gender neutral pronoun?

“That cunt said… “ has a nicer ring than “he/she said….”

😆😆
