If someone invites you for 'nibbles' what would you think was being offered?

I was invited, along with some others, to 'nibbles and drinks' at a fairly recent friend's house last night.

Everyone did the usual and asked if they could bring anything and everyone took a bottle and a little gift for the host.

The 'nibbles' was a small ramekin handed to each of us with peanuts in it. So a nibble if you will. What would you serve if you invited people for nibbles?

It's usually code for a ram-raid of picky bits to fill a table from M&S.

2026namechange · 08/02/2026 14:39

Nuts, crisps, olives and probably some cheese straws, sausage rolls and a platter of cold meat/cheeses

I would have been gutted at just receiving a bowl of nuts as I would have expected to be fed (albeit lightly)

fyllnadspenna · 08/02/2026 14:40

Yeah, that's a poor offering. I'd expect a variety of different choices to dip into as and when the mood struck, not a handful of peanuts doled out by the host.

Runnersandtoms · 08/02/2026 14:41

I mean, I go to my friend's house to enjoy their company not for the food. I had friends over for drinks the other day (I didn't mention nibbles) and served home-made guacamole, three types of crisps/crackers, olives and other antipasti. We'd all had dinner beforehand though.

DrCoconut · 08/02/2026 14:43

Definitely needs pretzels in there. I'd think cold snacks if I got an invitation for nibbles.

She should have said "drinks and peanuts".

What miserable do. What gift did you bring? I hope it was something that reflected all the trouble she went to.

Reminds me of when I was invited to a "wine and cheese" night at a friend's house once. Everyone was to bring their own wine but the "host" insisted she would get the cheese in.
10 people turn up and bring an extra bottle or 2 of wine and the host tells everyone to mingle she is just finishing off setting up the cheese board.
10 min later she calls everyone into the kitchen and she has put out 2 packets of cream crackers and 2 packs of easy singles on a dinner plate still in the wrappers. Delighted with herself tells everyone "don't be shy tuck in."

Climbingrosexx · 08/02/2026 14:54

I clearly don't get the concept of nibbles then, mine would be a cheese board with savoury biscuits, chutneys, cured meats, olives, dips, crisps a few sweat treats a selection of wines and anything else that takes my fancy

Allseeingallknowing · 08/02/2026 15:03

Unless spoons are provided for individual portions to be put on the plate, they are yukky with all the double dipping

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 08/02/2026 15:06

Nibbles at my house would be various crisps and dips, olives, maybe nuts or some kind of marinated garlic veg. After a few glasses of wine I’d hope for cheese and crackers too.

SENcatsandfish · 08/02/2026 15:09

Crisps, nuts, bread sticks, cheese, fruit platter maybe

BunnyLake · 08/02/2026 15:12

That would be annoying as nuts and alcohol make me sick so I never mix them.

I would have googled what makes good nibbles for some inspiration.

This makes me so sad! I remember wine and cheese nights when I was a young professional in London, everyone brought something and the selection was amazing. I wish my social life was still that sophisticated.

AgnesMcDoo · 08/02/2026 15:17

Peanuts and crisps. Maybe a sweet snack too.

Julehavehadyourtea · 08/02/2026 15:33

Mr Bean and the new year celebration with twiglets

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/02/2026 15:38

I'd be expecting at least a variety of dry crunchy munchy stuff - pretzels, cheeselets, peanuts, crisps...

Less than a full buffet, but more than just peanuts for sure!

TellMeSomethingGoodAboutMrSchuAndHisTightBreeks · 08/02/2026 11:37

A school mum invited me for drinks and nibbles some years back, it was WKD and fish fingers and smiley faces laid out like a buffet. It was hilarious and I had great time. I always think about her when I'm hosting and providing snacks.

I honestly think I'd love that for the early 2000s nostalgia! 🤣🤣🤣

Daisywhatsyouranswer · 08/02/2026 15:43

Nibbles to me also says something more than was provided, if I was just serving nuts I’d not say nibbles just say come for drinks and not mention food.

if I was saying nibbles I’d have a variety, once I did sushi, but it would be finger food, but not heavy, so nuts, crisps, dips. Mini pasties, falafel, little sausages, maybe some asparagus, etc,

LiveToTell · 08/02/2026 15:43

More like a buffet - enough for someone to fill a plate up.

LiteraryBambi · 08/02/2026 15:49

This is why I always eat before I go to someone's house if I dont know them well (sometimes if I do!) or they're not in my family (my family are feeders so would never just do nuts and crisps).

GameOfJones · 08/02/2026 15:51

Drinks and nibbles to me is more than a ramekin of peanuts and less than a buffet. So nuts, crisps, dips, olives and maybe some charcuterie.

It is piss poor hosting from her to be honest. Everyone brought a bottle anyway so all she provided was some peanuts under the guise of hosting you at her house. It's miserly.

JumpingPumpkin · 08/02/2026 15:55

Haha, I thought you were going to say you turned up to a full buffet, not something so tiny.

Tryagain26 · 08/02/2026 15:55

Crisps, nuts, olives, cheese, little bits you can edit standing with one hand

Makemineacosmo · 08/02/2026 15:56

Rattai · 08/02/2026 11:25

Was anyone asked about a nut allergy beforehand?

No. 😂

Sorry, been out shopping. I kind of think of crisps, dips, olives, maybe some cheese & biscuits. Not loads at all but more than about 30 peanuts. We had all eaten beforehand and no one was expecting dinner or anything. It was just a bit ... odd.

A selection of drinks and snacks. Crisps, dips, and some canape style nibbles ie smoked salmon on a blini, honey and soya cocktail sausages
Is people were then going onto dinner or had had dinner prior - then less
