I don’t mean commando crawling behind the sofa when the door bell rings or one chicken seeing an entire family through the winter. Slightly more obscure things you see crop up quite often that you’ve never heard anyone say or do in real life. I’ll go first -

OP looking for a miracle product or cut for their frizzy, untameable hair but point blank refusing to blow dry or style it in any way shape or form.

People falling over themselves to call an OP unreasonable for being miffed that the guy she’s dating hasn’t been in contact for a few days. Apparently a text exchange every 3-5 business days is more than enough and OP is clearly needy and deeply insecure.

OP posts:

People who live in the middle of nowhere but can’t drive.

1457bloom · 18/01/2026 18:44

Not turning the heating on until it’s -1%c at home.

People who think 18 year olds are suddenly completely capable adults and parenting is over. Like have you met an 18 year old

Gloriousgardener11 · 18/01/2026 18:46

People who think they and their kids are NOT the problem in a public space.

Yes and often the same ones who say you're unreasonable to leave your 17 year old at home alone while you pop to the corner shop for three minutes incase the house explodes/they're abducted by aliens.

My pet peeve is “why wouldn’t you?” I only see it on Mumsnet and it’s used for the most extreme things. OP- I wash my towels once every couple of weeks, is that enough?
Poster- I have always washed mine after each use and then disinfect them all in a boil wash every Sunday, why wouldn’t you?
🙄

Back2TheDrawingBoard · 18/01/2026 18:50

Thinking it’s ok to wear a white outfit to a wedding. Doesn’t matter if it looks bridal or not, it means the actual bride’s dress doesn’t stand out in the photos.

Or not having it on at ALL.. Coz that's what layers, blankets, and duvets are for. Who needs heating?!

I mean, I am even thinking of getting the boiler removed, and the radiators ripped out. No point. As I never have the heating on. #sarcasm

AffableBill · 18/01/2026 18:53

Deciding to not invite close family to weddings. Just because.

Grin Ah, I actually see the opposite of this.
Having to have the heating on at 25 +. The average Mner simply cannot function at anything less Wink
I have to admit I'm overheating at 18+

Oh God, definitely! A poster says they’re having a few irritating, not hugely serious, problems with their 18yo and there’s a chorus of ‘he/she’s an adult, get rid’. It blows my mind how people can be so dismissive of these still fledgling adults.

Re the OP, blow drying makes my frizzy hair, um, frizzier. It’s a thing! Believe me, I’ve tried.

Zov · 18/01/2026 18:53

Also, thinking a size 6 to 8 is a normal/regular clothes size for women - and most women they know are that size.

Anything above a size 12 is obese.

We have lost sight of what a healthy weight is.

It's often one or the other isn't it? Grin

Zov · 18/01/2026 18:56

People having an absolute fucking rant and rage because a cousin STOLE her baby name. (Cousin had the baby first!)

First of all, why the hell did you tell everyone your baby name before it was born?

Secondly, who cares? MANY families have cousins and second cousins with the same first name.

It really is GrinI wonder what the happy medium is. My thermostat currently says 15.5 and this is perfect for me. I'm in light pyjamas but I do have a blanket over me.
I much prefer layers and cooler air.

13RidgmontRoad · 18/01/2026 18:58

Just the lack of allowance of difference.

Some people home-cook everything, some are in a McD's every week after football.

Some have an income of £12k for a family of five, others have £300k.

Some kids are sporty/severely autistic/eat restrictively/have a niche interest/are average/are particularly talented at this or that.

Some people drink nightly, others not at all.

Yet on here it's often a hugely derailing thing to have to explain your particular life/habits etc because sometimes people seem to need to dig and dig for information to somehow catch out an OP who simply lives differently from themselves.

pizzaHeart · 18/01/2026 18:58

Heating threads do make me wonder. When people are describing how much layers and covers they have on it got me thinking how they manage a visit to the toilet or making a cup of tea.

Yes! See also talk about the “launching” of adult children. Perhaps they fire them out of a cannon on their 18th birthday, never to darken their doorstep again.

The absolute fear and hatred for soft play.

Most parents I know in real life (whilst finding soft play a bit of a chore to go to) see the benefits of a couple of hours at soft play - out the weather, children burn off energy with little parental involvement required, able to have a drink and a bit of a sit down, toilets on site, food on site.

On the same vein, the absolute fear or distain had for other "school mums" and the "school WhatsApp group".

I freely admit to this. I have no knowledge about how to style my hair or interest in finding out. I would love a miracle product but in the absence of one I will carry on just tieing it up and being disappointed. That miracle product could come on to the market any day though. I live in hope!

Im a layerer upper. I feel the difference in temperature when nip to thr loo, get drinks snacks etc but it's not uncomfortable. Plus this only takes 5mins.

Sitting in a comfortable temperature the rest of the time is more important to me.

No I get that and I sympathise but it’s those who just won’t accept that a serum or a certain haircut will not take them from Phil Spector to Julia Roberts.
