A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Talking of elections Labour doubling down on postponing local elections in areas being reorganised.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/councils-granted-flexibility-to-finish-reorganisation

scroll down a fair bit to get to the list of those councils where elections look likely to be postponed, plus those - and credit to this second group - who look committed to holding their local elections due in May.

Given all these Councils are being reorganised it seems to imply that the ones who’ve requested their elections be cancelled are particularly inept. Given running elections on a fairly fixed schedule is something they do as standard. Or perhaps I’m missing something.🤔

Councils granted flexibility to finish reorganisation

This once-in-a-generation reform will end the outdated two-tier system and build stronger local councils.

In other news, another 1000 migrants have crossed here in the last week despite the not ideal weather conditions, and the first batch of migrants have been moved into the ex army barracks at Crowborough in the dead of night (protests have been going on by local residents for months but to no avail it seems),

And coincidentally (not) East Sussex is one of numerous places that won’t hold local elections in May 😡😡

LupaMoonhowl · 22/01/2026 14:33

And re Burnham - he was only going to go for a safe seat - natch.
Agree about getting the popcorn out watching for the NEC to approve 😂😂😂

38thparallel · 22/01/2026 14:43

Apparently, there was an interview with the home secretary and she said she had a vision of having a "panopticon" state.

Wont all the criminals just put on masks?

Disappointingly East Sussex is a conservative controlled council who actively asked the government to cancel their local elections. For the second year in row.

Doesn’t matter what flavour of council they are -it still stinks!

Sure the govt were happy to oblige.

Yup. That will make it easier to pin it on people who look similar I guess. I wonder if she knows about facial recognition and ethnicity problems but at this point I feel like most people in government don't know much.

As I understand it was getting agreement on the pension entitlement that was the main reason for him not resigning his seat. It seems agreement has been reached on that now, though I’ve not seen any definite confirmation that he is stepping down yet. Seems most likely outcome though.

if that does happen and if Burnham is selected as Labour candidate and if he does win the by-election it then creates an arguably bigger election to elect a new Greater Manchester mayor. Which given timing would on FPTP basis still I believe.

Then again given penchant for cancelling elections maybe there would be no mayoral election.

Gwynne has resigned, now confirmed.

If the NEC want to block Burnham from standing, they will probably use the prospect of a mayoral election as an excuse. I guess we're about to find out how much influence Starmer and McSweeney have over the NEC.

Me too

Idk much about them but here it says who they include, surely they’ll be pro Burnham. Although I guess McSweeney might have more say, not sure

  1. Composition: The NEC includes leaders/representatives from the Shadow Cabinet, MPs, Councillors, Trade Unions (major funders), CLPs (grassroots members), Socialist Societies, Young Labour, and BAME Labour, providing broad representation.
TheNuthatch · 22/01/2026 16:20

No idea how the NEC works. From a piece by Sam Coates:-

If Burnham is granted permission to apply for the seat, the NEC creates a long and a shortlist. The long list is done over email, then the shortlisting is done by a panel. The panel has three members of the NEC, one member of the board and a local constituency representative. The panel is chosen by the office of the general secretary, Hollie Ridley, who is close to McSweeney, and decides the panel. So it's far from clear he wins this.

Thanks. They could possibly block him somehow but that would look really bad for Starmer. Scared he’d be ousted.

More in common's January MRP poll shows a Reform gain in Andrew Gwynne's former seat.

Reform on 381 seats, Labour reduced to 85 seats, Conservatives 70 seats. Labour might not even make it to official opposition at this rate of decline. The colours on the map are staggering.

Blimey look at those colours. The poll below won’t go down well either with the Labour lot.

Just reading on Burnham it looks like the unions might have a view, to start BBC -

Steve Wright, general secretary of the Labour-affiliated Fire Brigades Union, said: "It would be a democratic outrage if Andy Burnham was blocked from seeking selection as Labour's by-election candidate in this seat.

"Our union will fiercely resist any attempts to stitch up the selection."

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 22/01/2026 18:29

But there is no crisis in the Labour party?
