A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Agreed - Rory Stewart on TRIP saying Europe and UK needs to take a hard line and bear the sanctions…he’s not worried about his business collapsing is he? Also, it’s gesture politics we have no real alternative to US dependence at present…

The tariffs will come and go. But I do think Trump is serious about not spending American money or lives on defending Europe.

It’s replacing the vast US military power in Europe that the Europeans will have to face up to. Europe’s pensioners, benefit claimants, medical services, French farmers, industrial subsidies, etc etc would all lose out big time. And taxes for most taxpayers - not just the very rich - would go through the roof.

Januaryescape · 21/01/2026 19:35

Oh he’s absolutely serious about that, and the US narrative has changed and democrats will find that hard to shift back even if tent had a will to. We need the strategists to think hard about what we can do to mitigate the effects of being tied to a global power no longer serious about multi lateral action, the art of the possible at this stage.

Can't say that I blame the American people. Looking at our European leaders and ministers.

@justasking111 yeah that speech is why I posted here about China and Canada forming an alliance

@Upstartled "human wall of waffle" LOL 😂😂 it's a tactic in itself though. Maybe I won't watch it. I've done very well at doing the stuff I'm actually supposed to do today.

There's so much to catch up on! And it will probably all change by tomorrow

Sorry if I've got my threads in a muddle but I think someone up thread may have asked why Rachel Reeves wasn't in the chamber today. I think she's at WEF.

I wonder how many people we've sent!

EasternStandard · 21/01/2026 20:13

Looks like Mark Rutte has agreed something and tariffs are off.

I’m glad I didn’t expend too much energy on this stuff sometimes it’s just wait and get past the huge amount of noise.

EasternStandard · 21/01/2026 20:13

.

TheNuthatch · 21/01/2026 20:23

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame Agree with all the points you've made. Trump would have got bored and moved on within days. All those taking a hard line need to STFU. The reaction from some on the left feels opportunistic, including Carney. Carney was elected to be anti Trump so this was a good opportunity for him to bang that drum.

It seems the Greenland situation has now been resolved, which will be a disappointment to some I suspect. Looking at you Ed Davey. 👀

Trump has posted that after a meeting with Mark Rutte, a preliminary agreement has been reached on Greenland and the tariff threat has been removed.

So Vance Rubio etc will run the negotiations and report to Trump. That's interesting

I suspect Trump is bored of the subject and wants to concentrate on the mid-terms.
He's had his fun, caused a load of froth, and moved on, as he does.

Thanks. I liked that article. He deserves credit for his handling of Trump.
Pity he didn't get a meeting with DT before Mark Carney got on his soapbox.

It's amazing what you find when you dig a little Carney, Starmer and Reeves a mutual admiration society. Read the article and decide.

I haven’t read it yet but he has been v good. He’s put in a lot of work in dealing with DT, plus he probably needs to somewhat due to the big bump in NATO funding caused by DT’s actions.

I don't think Donald Trump had any intentions to firstly 'invade' nor secondly to put trade tariffs which would affect the USA as badly as the UK and the EU. I believe Trump's business strategy, throughout his time has always to ask for the impossible and end up with the 'nearly' impossible. This being evident from his first big business venture in New York the Grand Hyatt Hotel in 1978 where he got a 40 year exemption from paying taxes. There was such a desperate need for new hotels in New York and due to the audacity of a young Donald Trump. Thus, for this reason the Democratic Party have always hated him because he held a 'Bankrupted' City of New York hostage, they conveniently forget without Donald Trump New York would not have got the much needed development to a City that was in terminal decline.

Therefore. I despair at the 'left' for their continued belief that Donald Trump is either 'lucky' bad and induced with 'Deranged Trump Syndrome' or Whatever, stupid 'No Mark' politicians like Ed Davey Believe. The, reality is Donald Trump is one of the greatest figures of the late 20th early 21st Centuries. This, evidenced from a man who has been at the very top of either the business or political World for over 50 years !

I know this is a startling fact to Left Wingers but History will show that Donald Trump was one hell of a remarkable and brilliant man.

justasking111 · 22/01/2026 00:44

DH a self employed man third generation said Trump's strength is that he's a business man first, second and last. He runs America like this and had four years of planning.

His grandfather and other local business men stood for council as aldermen. They built and paid for the schools, libraries and other public buildings. They shaped the main town and nearby ones alongside the churches in some cases. Some were business men from the satanic mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire who had second homes in North Wales. We had tb, and other isolation hospitals they built and paid for. Sanatoriums for quarry men . My eye clinic at a small hospital is still owned by Manchester city council. It's in a beautiful setting.

It's out of fashion now to pay forward to create parks, plant trees you'll never see mature. They saw the bigger picture. They had enough money so became philanthropic. Apparently Gates and Bezos are. But spend it on worldwide efforts rather than their own back yard.

‘This is welcome.’ Chairman of Denmark’s foreign affairs, didn’t catch name

Yes there are definitely echoes from The Art of the Deal in whats happened with Greenland.

Sounds promising.
I'm hoping I can switch the news soon on without seeing Trump's face.

The ammendment to ban SM for under 16s has passed the Lords.
Back to the commons where it should have enough support from Labour MPs to get through.

I don’t agree. It all seems pointless to me and would no doubt cost a lot of money.
