A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@EasternStandard policy beliefs now? I suppose they are both following the party line.

In the past, Glasman has called for more restrictions on immigration, and even on the right of free movement, and obviously backed Brexit. I saw him speak at the Together conference - I watched online, I didn't go - and I kept thinking, how is this guy still with Labour? But then I remembered the red Tory - although I can't remember his name - and I appreciate that some things are going to seem out of place and I'd have to know his view on everything really, to know whether he aligns with Labour. If he is the Labour member defecting, I would not be surprised.

Mahmood used to be on the APPG for refugees and immigration and at that time, wanted a softer line on asylum seekers - we weren't dealing with these kinds of numbers in those daysthough. But I don't see Mahmood as having a logical home with any other party, except maybe Green?

some of this depends on how much you believe in what she says now. If she had given some kind of explanation for her change in position or her changing view, then I might believe it. But at present, I feel as if people just stand up and say whatever Starmer tells them to say.

I'm really sorry I can't remember what the specifics are, but during the Together event, Glasman said a few things that made me wonder what he thinks of Starmer.

Thanks @EmeraldRoulettejust doing night time stuff will come back to this later

If Starmer has gone to far on Digital ID's No Jury Trials ETC. Then, Maybe Lord Glasman might have decided he can't take it anymore and not want to be associated with the Labour Party anymore. He, probably wonders as we all do what authoritarian idea they will come up next. I also think Glasman is from the old Kate Hoey part of the party that believed in freedom of choice and individual beliefs . Hence, why Kate Hoey was Brexit, Pro Hunting and a supporter of Selective Grammar Schools, ideas today that would get the Whip removed immediately.

Morning, everyone! I'm just popping into the thread to say hi and that I'm so pleased to have found you all. Sometimes on the politics threads on MN, I feel like I'm losing my mind. Just read that 'most people' believe Starmer is a capable PM and that the Labour govt are doing a pretty good job overall. I feel like I've stumbled into an alternative reality.

I'm someone who literally danced for joy in the streets of Manchester when Labour swept the 1997 GE, and I was raised by parents who were both local Labour councillors in our Red Wall constituency, but now I completely and utterly despise them and would never vote for them again in a million years.

I really like Kemi, and feel that she's getting better and better.

Welcome. Yes it’s too much with some, the level of loyalty is off the charts but they are out of touch with the general public. Best just to scroll on by and find hope here : )

Glad you’ve joined

Januaryescape · 16/01/2026 07:03

Similar feelings @Calliecarpa about 1997 and the early 2000s. I’d like those days back….

TheNuthatch · 16/01/2026 07:50

@Calliecarpa Welcome to the thread. I could have written your post myself, almost word for word.

Thanks for the warm welcome, all! I haven't posted about politics on MN since the last GE, because the threads leading up to the GE were just so ridiculous and so off-putting. Someone would start a thread suggesting that just maybe, the impending Labour govt weren't going to be completely amazing and perfect. First comment would be 'Hello, Nigel'. Second comment would be 'Posting from Tory Party HQ, I see'. The same nonsense over and over, agh.

boys3 · 16/01/2026 08:37

Not hugely surprising that Labour held the York Council by-election yesterday and relatively comfortably tbf, much reduced vote share.
Lab 37%
Ref 20%
Grn 20%
LD 18%
Con 4%
Ind < 1%

Turnout 31.6%, so pretty typical of a local council election. And all hopefully grateful they were allowed to vote. Unlike it would seem several million in the what they might have thought were their upcoming May Local Elections.

It's batshit to claim Starmer is doing well given the polls proving he isn't! Delusional.

Morning all,
I am still reading this sane corner of MN.
I joined the Conservatives earlier this week because at £4 a month, it made me feel like I was buying KB a coffee or a Monster before PMQ, and i feel like I already got my money back when I see how she handled RJ,
Masterful move, and superb quote 😁

The more pro Labour on here try the further down they go, maybe their posts aren’t helping their party, despite the frequency.

'Hello Nigel' is still considered a witty reply in some MN circles.

I've never been sure about joining a political party. Does the obligation stop at handing your money over each month and voting on party matters or are you pressured to be sociable, hand out leaflets and knock on doors?

Just money I think if that’s what you’re comfortable with. So far that’s been the case anyway

I think they’d scare off people who just want to pay if they got all full on with that. There’s options to do more but no obligation afai can see.

Yes! The last time I saw it, I typed out a 'Wow, that's so wildly original! Did you come up with that all by yourself?' response, but then deleted it. 😁
