Do you have sex in the house with your DH when kids around?

We did when the kids were very little but haven’t done for years. I remember walking in on my parents at it in their bedroom when I was about 6 and DH did on his parents too when he was 10 or 11. As a result, we never have done - only when kids out or we on a kid-free weekend away. I am told this is not normal? Normal to me though - but my kids are all away at uni now so we are making up for lost time!

Can’t think of much worse than attempting it with our 15 year old around, we used to in the early mornings (quietly) when she’d be dead to the world but we now also have a baby so RIP to my sex life

I used to hear my mum a lot and I still think it’s disgusting, I do think we need to consider others in the house

WhoamItoday11 · 30/12/2025 06:39

Get a good door lock.

Toastersandkettles · 30/12/2025 07:21

We only get time away from the DCs about 3 times a year, so yes we do have sex with them in the house. We lock the door, play music and try not to be too loud.

QuietLifeNoDrama · 30/12/2025 07:37

Yeah we do, otherwise we’d have to book days off to do it when they were at school. I get not wanting to scar your DC but most people don’t abstain, they’re just discrete and lock on the door. Very much depends on the age of the DC though. I wouldn’t be leaving young ones unattended, 8+ fine, 12+ no need to worry as they’re out of the house unaccompanied for a reasonable amount of time anyway.

bloomchamp · 30/12/2025 08:19

We would literally only have sex twice a year then in our house. There’s always someone here. Strong lock on the door, early morning when the teens are fast asleep, tv on lol. We had a very rare evening to ourselves recently and as soon as that door shut behind them we were straight to bed like a pair of newly weds lol. I do joke that by the time we finally get the house to ourselves and can be as loud as we like, we will be too old and frail to do anything about it lol

GroovyChick87 · 30/12/2025 08:29

When they're asleep. We lock the door and have the tv on or music to mute the sound. We don't have child free weekends.

Catsandcwtches · 30/12/2025 08:31

No, but my kids are only with me half the week so it’s a different situation!

nancpmf · 30/12/2025 08:34

I’m amazed how many people have locks on their bedroom doors! I would feel a bit awkward explaining to my teens why we were putting a lock on our door and ours alone.

SuperDuperFuckNuts · 30/12/2025 08:35

Not at the moment whilst DC are young & could quite easily wake up and wander through/need something in the night. I don’t forsee a problem when they’re older though and understand not to randomly wander into my bedroom!

we also each WFH once a week or so, and try to make it the same day.

Mithral · 30/12/2025 08:38

We don't as we're both at home while he's a school a couple of times a week.

Locks on bedroom doors feels weird to me - do all the bedrooms have them or just mum and dad's?

A rubber door wedge is a simple yet inspired invention. 😊

I bought one when an ex-boyfriend had a totally weird mother who liked to try and catch us at it by bursting through the bedroom door early mornings.

NCfor24 · 30/12/2025 08:41

We do but infrequently. I worry about the kids hearing or wandering in but DH does not. No TV or music in our bedroom, house is always silent at bedtime and the kids go to bed same time as us.
In fact DH got grumpy when I said no this week as we'd all just gone to bed so I knew they would be awake.
We don't abstain but it does limit our sex life definitely.

firstofallimadelight · 30/12/2025 08:42

Yes at about 11pm at night when kids are asleep. But you need a lock on your door

That is excellent, I could get on board with that!

HopSpringsEternal · 30/12/2025 08:55

We would only have sex once a month if we did this. All older teens. Someone is pretty much always in the house.

DisappointedD · 30/12/2025 08:57

Yes we do, kids know to knock plus we have a door wedge we put behind it. Both teens now so usually on a morning when they are fast asleep.

GalaxyJam · 30/12/2025 08:58

We haven’t had a night in the house without kids, or away without kids, for 7 years so yes, we have sex when they’re in the house. Only when in bed asleep though.

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/12/2025 09:01

We never go away without the kids and it’s rare for them both to be out (other than school when we’re at work!) so yes we have sex with the boys in the house. We never would otherwise! Late at night when asleep generally.

one friend has trained her DCs that she and her DP have “a nap” on weekend afternoons and they are not to be disturbed!

ShesTheAlbatross · 30/12/2025 09:01

Only when they’re out? That seems a bit much tbh. But mine are young so they’re never out without us.
We have sex when they’re asleep.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 30/12/2025 09:04

Everyone does surely? Our kids are older so it's mainly just late at night, although they aren't on the same floor as us so that helps a bit with privacy.
We generally get one day a week when all the kids are out so DP always WFH that day so we can take advantage properly!

landlordhell · 30/12/2025 09:07

We are in our 50s and still have one DD21 at home. Yes we perfected the art of silent sex over the years otherwise we’d never do it. It was always at bedtime though until I became insatiable in my late 40s when the garage became handy. Luckily it has a lock!

Lurkingandlearning · 30/12/2025 09:08

WhoamItoday11 · 30/12/2025 06:39

Get a good door lock.

It can just be a cheap bolt or latch. And keep the noise down 😬

My parents did this and I only cottoned on when I was a teen! "We're off for a lie down now, you watch some TV for a bit."

Nightlight8 · 30/12/2025 09:19

I mean it really doesn't need to be noisy! Im surprised anybody would dare to be loud with kids in the house anyway. I think once the kids are in bed it's the only solution!

Bringemout · 30/12/2025 09:21

Yeah but only at night when DC is in bed tbh and we are quiet. Plus I only sleep in knickers and DH only wears boxers so DD is used to wandering in and finding us pretty unclothed, we’d just hide under the bedcovers, I think there are quite a few things which would be difficult to explain though. This is making me think I need to wedge the door just in case though, never been walked in on before but no doubt tit will happen. I walked in on my parents as a teen once and had to go for a walk at like 2am to calm down.
