Anyone else ruin Christmas because they were drunk?

Officially hit rock bottom. Ruined Christmas for
my children due to my behaviour when drunk. Full of self loathing and I have finally got to the point of realising that I can’t drink alcohol again.

Day 1 of being sober.

A relapse is part of recovery. Get yourself to some alcoholics anonymous meetings.

MysteryMachineRidesAgain · 02/08/2026 09:54

The last eight months have not been for not, you've done really really well. You have shown you can do it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/08/2026 09:57

I don’t know about actually drunk, but I did once have so much Bucks Fizz, I completely forgot about the potatoes, so at 3 pm when we were supposed to eat, they weren’t even parboiled.

We eventually sat down at around 5.30, when everyone was that much more ready for it, so we’ve had Christmas dinner at 5.30-6 ever since.

I think it can be so easy to focus on the “streak” of days sober and then little slips like this hit harder than they should. You have drank 1 day out of 8 months, that’s an achievement! Don’t let it take away the sense of pride you should feel. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on the wagon again Smile

TicTac80 · 02/08/2026 11:09

You relapsed, but you’re human. What you do now is what counts. X

Hufflebuffs · 02/08/2026 11:11

It’s not been for nothing. You have shown yourself how you can feel better about yourself not drinking. You still did 8 months. Get back on the horse. Maybe going to AA would be helpful. You can do this. Sending love and best wishes.

Seconding all of these words. Don’t punish yourself. Just start again. Take care of yourself.

Its not been for nothing!
Get back on the wagon today and keep going.
It's a blip that's all

Don't worry @Newyearnewmewoooop . The older I get the more I think being successful in life is the ability to sigh, forgive yourself and just get back on the metaphorical horse. Nobody is perfect. Xxxx

Thank you everyone, new day today and resetting the counter 🙏

Do consider going to AA meetings

It might be the extra boost you need.

Good on you @Newyearnewmewoooop Lots of us rooting for you x

Relapse is a natural part of the process. Just renew your determination. Go to AA or Smart Recovery if they have it in the UK (more intellectual and less sentimental than AA) and get some support. Learn how to stop the cycle of shame—drinking—shame—sobriety—relapse—shame again.

Dumbledora8 · 03/08/2026 14:45

Op, what is it that you actually do when you are drunk?

Newyearnewmewoooop · 03/08/2026 14:48

@Dumbledora8 nothing particularly bad this time, just sloppy and loud. My children get scared though when they see me acting like that, they are ND and I guess to see mummy out of control/acting different to what they are used to, is scary 😟

@Newyearnewmewoooop aw ok. Just try not to be too hard on yourself OP.

look up the Sinclair method- it helps with binge drinking xxxx

Beachlover1993 · 03/08/2026 15:14

My ex used to drink , dreaded Christmas, birthdays, BBQs, weddings. Ex went to his brother wedding and never got to the evening reception and could not stand up, still cant trust him around alcohol, doubt he will ever change.
Good luck

what a supportive post- if you can't be supportive then maybe don't say anything at all ffs!!

TheTecknician · 03/08/2026 15:55

Not me personally but I've seen the alcohol-related behaviour of certain familiy members wreck otherwise nice occasions, not just Christmas. That might be one reason I parked Christmas thirty years ago.

I just feel like the last 8 months have been for nothing! I have undone all that good work in one night, and all the confidence they had in the “new me” will be gone.

Those 8 months weren’t for nothing. You gave your liver a good break for a start. You proved you have willpower. You were probably more present for your partner and children. You didn’t have any awful hangovers and feelings of shame after a session. Perhaps you noticed other benefits too- sleep, skin, weight? And above all, as others have said, you proved to yourself that you can enjoy life and function well without alcohol.

So actually you achieved an awful lot in those 8 months- those gains are not lost just because you’ve had one relapse. A relapse is incredibly common and part of the process for many recovering addicts. Now you can embark on your next spell of sobriety. It might be another 8 months, or it might be much longer. But just get started- you know how to do it, you’ve proved that. 💐

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 04/08/2026 13:47

Maybe you needed the relapse to show you that isn’t the life you want. You have done really well and have so much more understanding of your triggers and changes. You don’t it once you can do it again, and keep going.

Well done for coming back to this thread. That can’t have been easy..

PluckyChancer · 07/08/2026 21:29

Definitely go to regular meetings as this is a lifelong journey and you’ll get support from others who understand the stresses and temptations and that you can’t ever have just one drink, ever again.

You CAN do this!
