I can’t stand Rowan Atkinson

Used to love Mr Bean as a kid, I found it on Netflix recently to show the kids and I honestly couldn’t understand how I used to enjoy it at all. He was absolutely insufferable and I couldn’t bear to watch him. I can’t stand his newer Netflix stuff either, Man Vs Bee/Baby. He’s so incompetent I could just scream!

Anyone else?

I dont like him 😄

Never liked mr bean either

MissyB1 · 16/12/2025 19:09

He was absolutely brilliant back in my era (80s). Secret Policeman’s ball etc.. some of his skits could make me weep with laughter. You should watch him doing the school register, or the one when he’s the devil welcoming the sinners to hell, or the one where he’s the headmaster and he’s beaten a boy to death “a few fatal beatings” ! Probably not PC now but hysterically funny back then!

YellowCherry · 16/12/2025 19:10

He was amazing in Blackadder but I never liked Mr Bean.

Didn't like it the first time around because slapstick's not my thing - doubt I would like it if I watched it now. My best mate thinks it's hilarious, but he's also into Carry On and other farcical stuff. It's just taste isn't it? I like Daniel Sloss, but know he's not everyone's cup of tea. Humour is very subjective after all.

Namechangeforthis88 · 16/12/2025 19:12

But why can't you stand Rowan Atkinson? You know they're characters, right?

DeanStockwell · 16/12/2025 19:18

Like @YellowCherry I liked him in black adder but I can't stand Mr Bean, but not because I don't like RA , I just don't like that kind of comedy .

cariadlet · 16/12/2025 19:20

I'll echo pp. I don't like or dislike Rowan Atkinson himself.

I have never found Mr Bean funny because physical humour doesn't really appeal to me but I have always loved Blackadder (especially series 2 onwards).

marmaladeteal · 16/12/2025 19:22

Always found the characters he plays unbearable. But I’m clearly in a minority as he is universally loved.

CharlieBT · 16/12/2025 19:22

I agree, can't watch it now

sprigatito · 16/12/2025 19:23

I think he’s a genius. Anyone who can play Blackadder, Mr Bean and Maigret convincingly is a chameleonic and gifted performer. Mr Bean through 21st century eyes could be problematic for sure - I know some people find it ableist (not that that would bother most MNers) but it’s still an outstanding feat of performance. He basically made mime a worldwide sensation again.

IAmKerplunk · 16/12/2025 19:27

Hated Mr Bean. Love Rowan Atkinson - especially in Blackadder and his stand up.

HarryVanderspeigle · 16/12/2025 19:29

Mr Bean is supposed to be unlikeable and selfish. It works globally because he hardly talks, so can be understood in any language. He has been phenomenally successful.

NowThatsWhatICallRecent · 16/12/2025 19:29

No idea what he's like as a person but I found both Bean and Blackadder funny. He was also funny in The Thin Blue Line, Johnny English and Keeping Mum.

SergeantWrinkles · 16/12/2025 19:30

Loved him in blackadder. Cant stand Mr bean. Rowan Atkinson himself is lovely, I hear.

ladymalfoy · 16/12/2025 19:34

Don't like Mr.Bean. Frank Spencer but silent.

TappaMcFeety · 16/12/2025 19:34

I have never liked him, even in my younger days, and was only thinking today when I saw his latest offering on Netflix, that it must be about time that he hung up his boots.

Poonu · 16/12/2025 19:35

Never liked bean.
Loved black adder

Luckyingame · 16/12/2025 19:37

I don't know about Mr. Atkinson, but the stuff is and always has been extremely cringy and speaking for myself, some scenes made me slightly nauseous.

timetogetlost · 16/12/2025 19:37

I don't think the man is offensive. He has a masters degree and a ridiculously high IQ. He is amazing. Maybe it is more the characters he has played that annoy people.

WaneyEdge · 16/12/2025 19:39

Loved The Thin Blue Line.

Funnily enough, my mums friend can’t stand him and can’t watch anything he’s in. I liked Mr Bean when it was first released, but I was at primary school. Have seen it the odd time since, usually when waiting for another programme to start, didn’t enjoy it.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/12/2025 19:40

I have to say I loved Man V Baby. I loved his character and it was one of the few things we have watched all together as a family that was actually bearable. I loathe most of the stuff my children watch on Netflix but this was a really feel good Christmas watch. I thought RA came across well on Graham Norton on Friday night too.

I think that his Maigret was truly excellent and it would’ve been good to see him do more. There was a depth there that had not been in other portrayals. It helped that it was also a good production.

A PP is right in my view: the secret policeman‘s ball and secret policeman‘s other ball were outstandingly good and he was both funny and achingly poignant in Blackadder.

I cannot bear Mr. Bean.

PerspicaciaTick · 16/12/2025 19:46

I have a small and unexpected crush on Rowan Atkinson as Blackadder and Johnny English 😳

Crunched · 16/12/2025 19:46

I could forgive him anything for Blackadder Goes Forth but, additionally, one of my DDs saw him at a school sports event (his child was competing in the same event as mine) and he was so patient with autographs and posing for photos.

IAmKerplunk · 16/12/2025 19:49

I had forgotten about The Thin Blue Line - I liked him in that as well
