Just horrendous. There was a big Jewish gathering on the beach. Jewish festival goers targeted by two gunmen. At least ten people dead according to police.

The video is also available via the BBC:

I hope so much this man gets all the plaudits.

And that he never has to buy a beer in the pub again. The courage that some people show in times like this leaves me in awe and with some hope.

Outside9 · 14/12/2025 12:01

As someone who wholeheartedly supports the Palestine cause (i don't see the relevance, but others have conflated this issue), I find this terror attack horrific and my thoughts are the victims' families.

I think the real motivation was simply evil. Non-evil people are able to listen to people from all cultures and religions without killing the people from one of them. And murder is a sin in the Koran. These acts are pure evil dressed up, because evil monsters have to pretend they have a cause. They tend not to say "I killed all these people because I'm an absolute piece of evil shit." They pretend it's in the name of religion, when all religious texts actually preach that murder is a terrible sin.

I’m sorry, but in the. Minds of terrorists this isn’t murder it’s jihad, not only permitted but encouraged by Islamic. Texts . If we don’t openly talk about the problem pretending it’s something else we will never solve it

TheTamerShrew · 14/12/2025 12:02

Here is the statement, there is a very clear omission as to who the victims are and the nature of the attack.

If it has since been mentioned, that is good, but I question why it has taken so long.

We need to acknowledge the threat that Islamist terrorists are to Western society.

Weekly marches in London where people are allowed to glorify terrorism and call for 'globalising the Intifada' or 'intifada revolution' should be banned.

That was in the immediate aftermath when it had not yet been determined that the target was the Hannuka by the Sea celebration, nor that it was a terrorist attack.

Further updates declared that info, and the PM's presser was clear about his support of the Jewish community and that all Australians must support the Jewish community and help them feel safe.

"Pakistani" is

Pakistani is an ethnic and national identity. I simply wrote the perp's name as reported on the ABC and said what many online, especially from the continent immediately noted. It sounded Pakistani, not Iranian or Indonesian (these differences exist) and this identity marker is salient to the conversation. Why is ONE Pakistani origin man gunning down Jews on an Australian beach? MN moderators, pause the deletion key and and think about whether this is automatically racist.

Islam is not a race.

...and radical Islam is very different from "Muslim." The sooner people grasp that, the better.

I wonder how many agree with you. I think it should be acknowledged but there seems to be movement against that.

Again, too little, too late.

It was reported from the beginning by other news sources, so the information was available.

Australia has a long history of not protecting her Jewish community and allowing Jew hatred to increase unchecked.

Couldn’t you have found a link that wasn’t by a fascist organization?

If anyone is interested and doesn’t want to click the link already posted there’s a post on The Times Instagram page showing the footage of the man appearing to disarm the shooter. It’s genuinely unreal - such a brave man. I keep watching it because it’s so incredible.

❤️ to everyone caught up in this horrendous terrorist attack and anyone feeling unsafe. Utterly unfathomable.

Radical Islam unfortunately is somewhat different, and corrupts the Qu'ran to encourage this sort of violence. Respecting religion has no place in the way we understand it.

PencilsInSpace · 14/12/2025 12:14

Early reports of unfolding events frequently come from extremist and fringe outlets (right or left) because they're not that bothered about fact checking, responsible reporting, legal restrictions etc. They just aim to get the footage out first to drive clicks.

Mainstream media will always be slower because they do have to fact check and comply with codes and the law.

When news like this breaks, it's inevitable that people will want to know and talk about what's going on asap and so it's inevitable that some dodgy sources will be shared.

I don't think this is a huge problem and after all, they're often the same dodgy sources that the mainstream journalists are watching and reporting on.

The trouble comes when mainstream media are then too slow, or when they downplay events, withold information, report dishonestly or with bias. Or don't report at all if they think they can get away with it.

When that happens, people stick with the dodgy sources.

What are you talking about? The news can say whatever they want or infer whatever they want. But making an official statement of what looks like the obvious inference took some time, and intelligence gathering. Police have been given special powers as a result. ASIO are involved. They are not wandering reporters with mics in hand postulating.

Little children have been shot at and traumatised and seriously injured, along with scores of others happily enjoying their afternoon by the sea, a dozen dead, two police in surgery, 29 with gunshot wounds taken to half a dozen different hospitals, including the children's hospital - I would say this is not the time to pick at the PM's response, which needed to be informed and measured.

The certain flag waving lot will be celebrating this.

This is how I feel.

I have a lot of sympathy for any innocent individuals who are living in a war zone, however I understand and don’t blame the Israelis for their retaliation after the music festival attack. I remember the scenes of crowds cheering and celebrating rape murder and the murder of babies, these scenes were happening in London and other places. Now we are expected to support these people…

These monsters are not fighting a war, if they were big brave men they would be over in Gaza fighting their cause, not murdering innocent families on a beach in a country that has nothing to do with the war the palatines started.

You cannot ignore the truth simply because it is inconvenient for you.

Teddleshon1 · 14/12/2025 12:16

@Outside9 really, you see no relevance at all between the pro Palestinian cause and attacks on Jews? Have you not seen people chanting “globalise the intifada”, tearing down pictures of the hostages, wearing insignias of paragliders, murdering Jews in the US? All in the explicit name of the Palestinian cause.

MeouwKing · 14/12/2025 12:17

This.

I wish all my kind friends who demonstrate for Palestine would understand this.

Totally agree. The fascists are the ones targeting Jews on their Holy days; marching with impunity through our city centres week in, week out, with covered faces and making threats of violence and intimidation. It’s nothing more than a murderous death cult.
