What do you wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house?

We were having a discussion at work about what to wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house. Most people felt it was automatically less dressy (say jeans and nice top) because you'd be wearing socks which would look silly if you were all glammed up. Others would go glammed up regardless. Some would be very casual.

All this assumes that the host hasn't specified a dress code. What would you wear?

I wouldn't go but then I don't know anyone who would make you take your shoes off at a party.

Fluffy slippers

I wouldn’t go. I went to a party once where we weren’t warned. My outfit looked ridiculous with trousers trailing on the floor. Never again. Sorry that’s not helpful!

You wouldn’t go if you couldn’t wear shoes? How bizarre!

Rainydayinlondon · 13/12/2025 13:57

I’m in my 50s and have been to many parties.

I have NEVER known any where people are not wearing their “party shoes” which, if they’re not arriving by car or taxi, they change into in the hallway. This must be a relatively recent phenomenon.

And do those of you who require shoes off at a party, have animals who sit on the floor with dirty bottoms? Our cat is very clean, BUT she doesn’t wash herself IMMEDIATELY afterwards. I wouldn’t want to be in stockinged feet where large dogs have sat!

Party clothes and slippers ( unless if the Pom Pom variety) is such an odd combination!

WestwardHo1 · 13/12/2025 14:01

Very strange and rather inhospitable. You'd think people who were that precious about their carpets and germs/dirt might be similarly precious about having other people in it, so it seems strange for then to host an event.

Plus I get really cold feet. I would take my slippers along, or massive fluffy slipper socks just to make a point.

Indoor shoes that haven’t been worn outside

Friendlygingercat · 13/12/2025 15:22

Ive travelled in widely in countries which are shoes off and people often sit and eat on the floor. I always wore a long loose dress (kaftan type) or skirt which covered me decently whether I sat up or lounged.

mathanxiety · 13/12/2025 19:32

Dressy trews, nice top, clean black socks, black ballet style slippers.

CharlieChaplin99 · 19/12/2025 08:46

Wear whatever you would normally wear minus the shoes. I don’t wear shoes in my own house and wouldn’t dream of wearing them in someone else's house. I don’t get the issue?

I take it you are maybe tiny OP and normally wear sky scraper heels hence the post as your usual clothes are maybe too long without heels.

NewAgeNewMe · 19/12/2025 10:55

Equally Id be pissed off if someone came to mine and took their shoes off. Horses for courses!

Some of these shoes off houses have pets, I wouldn't want to stand shoeless where someone's smelly hound had been

Do you worry a lot about this sort of thing?

KilliMonjaro · 19/12/2025 11:30

Do none of you people who are freaking out about the idea of taking your shoes off never go to the beach?

So weird.

I wouldn't go.

This.

ilovepixie · 19/12/2025 11:50

People are so weird about shoes on in a house. I’d rather have shoes than someone’s cheesy flaky feet!

Myoldbear · 12/12/2025 18:06

Wear dressy slippers eg black velvety ballerina type ones if you're wearing a dress.

I'd do this.

itsthetea · 19/12/2025 11:52

Given the amount of dog shit and tyre & brake debris on the streets the idea of not taking shoes off at the front door seems quite disgusting

Do you also only shower /bath once a week?

ilovepixie · 19/12/2025 11:53

sprinklesofadvice · 12/12/2025 18:55

Please don't go barefoot. 😖

As a shoes off house, I would prefer people to wear their wellies than to wander in with their toes touching my floor.

You can’t have it both ways. Either it’s shoes off and bare feet or shoes on

Nevereatcardboard · 19/12/2025 11:57

I’d wear my comfy pink and purple slippers or fluffy slipper socks with whatever else I’m wearing. I’m far beyond the stage of trying to be glamorous, which is probably why I’m not invited to many parties these days!

This.

Bonkers.

What do you do in summer when everyone is wearing sandals? You run the risk of making a guest feel uncomfortable, I think, if you’re so invested in your floors that you’re worried about shoes AND bare feet…if I were your friend I would just suggest meeting elsewhere.

Extraenergyneeded · 19/12/2025 12:16

I’d wear trousers and some Nordic boot slippers plus a sparkly top ( and take a Christmas jumper)

It’s not the beach though is it? It’s a dressy party with clothes that require nice smart shoes/heels and asking people to take them off. In a house. It’s a no from me and as I said previously, I would decline.

Let them wear the sandals inside obviously. I don't think any shoe off house prioritizes cleanliness over guest comfort, but I do have the preference for shoes off, socks on where polite to ask. 🤷‍♂️

Mammaamiaa · 29/12/2025 00:11

Jeans and socks. No one wants to see bare feet.

I hope all the non shoe removers here never have to go in the house of someone who's Japanese.
