What do you wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house?

We were having a discussion at work about what to wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house. Most people felt it was automatically less dressy (say jeans and nice top) because you'd be wearing socks which would look silly if you were all glammed up. Others would go glammed up regardless. Some would be very casual.

All this assumes that the host hasn't specified a dress code. What would you wear?

Tights

Tryingatleast · 12/12/2025 18:04

My instinct is it sounds better as it means you can wear something you wouldn’t have been able to find shoes to match!! I’d say whatever you want!!

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/12/2025 18:05

I wouldn’t go. I went to a party once where we weren’t warned. My outfit looked ridiculous with trousers trailing on the floor. Never again. Sorry that’s not helpful!

Wide trousers, glamorous top, bare feet and loud nail polish.

Tights

This! I don’t really understand why shoes off would rule out a dress or skirt.

Wear dressy slippers eg black velvety ballerina type ones if you're wearing a dress.

sprigatito · 12/12/2025 18:07

Tights, I suppose, but I wouldn’t be keen on a party where everyone was dressed up and in their socked feet. It’s weird and inhospitable and I wouldn’t expect to have much fun.

I’d do that too but I’d feel very flat-footed and uncomfortable

BDenergy · 12/12/2025 18:08

People are so weird about taking their shoes off. When I go to someone’s house I always assume I’ll be taking my shoes off tbh. If I don’t need to it feels weird.

YetiRosetti · 12/12/2025 18:10

I wouldn’t go. I don’t usually mind taking my shoes off for a casual visit but not for a party. I hate wearing tights, I find them really uncomfortable, but if you’re going and don’t mind tights then I would do dress and tights as I think this looks smarter than socks showing

A lot of party type shoes can be uncomfortable too!

CatamaranViper · 12/12/2025 18:13

I'd probably take my slippers with me.

MsWilmottsGhost · 12/12/2025 18:14

A dress and.....Big fluffy socks? 🤷

I would.

FancyCatSlave · 12/12/2025 18:15

I’d wear whatever I was going to wear with, tights, socks, barefoot etc.

If I know the hosts well I take slippers!

ChristmasinBrighton · 12/12/2025 18:16

Tights.

BaronessBomburst · 12/12/2025 18:16

Sparkly tights, and black slippers if I remembered to take them.

somethingischasingme · 12/12/2025 18:18

I never wear shoes inside so … socks!

Ddakji · 12/12/2025 18:18

I’ve never been to a shoes off party, thanks god, because unless they have decent underfloor heating my feet are going to be freezing within seconds. Frankly, knowing that would be enough to put me off going.

Flabelus! They are perfect for this. I have a pair I keep for indoors

I’d wear something dressy and my slippers

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/12/2025 18:24

So they are going to invite people to a party but still insist they take their shoes off? I think that’s really rude actually - party-wear with what? Bare feet? Stocking’d feet? Ugh. Personally I wouldn’t go if that was still the rule, I don’t like walking in other peoples floors without footwear, I don’t know what I’m standing on!

tarheelbaby · 12/12/2025 18:24

I'd be wearing my very best/favourite/most interesting and possibly Christmas themed socks.
I might arrive in Wellies/chukkas/outdoor shoes and change into an amazing pair of very nice (obviiously clean) party shoes. (Sainsbury's near me has black sequin ballerinas - totally unsuitable for outdoor wear but perfect to whisk out of your bougie shopper)
Going around in sock feet is not really a party but it could be a cozy night with close friends.

plus 1

I have a shoes off house : but not if I’m having a party, not fair on guests

BigSkies2022 · 12/12/2025 18:28

I’d wear the dressy chocolate velvet pyjamas I have been craving (£500 so I won’t) plus a pair of those velvet slippers if that’s within the shoes off code. If not, I’d go for sparkly socks

Owly11 · 12/12/2025 18:30

I wouldn't go.
