What do you wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house?

We were having a discussion at work about what to wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house. Most people felt it was automatically less dressy (say jeans and nice top) because you'd be wearing socks which would look silly if you were all glammed up. Others would go glammed up regardless. Some would be very casual.

All this assumes that the host hasn't specified a dress code. What would you wear?

Horrible big fat smelly hairy troll slippers

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/01/2026 11:55

I would wear shoes I don’t wear outside. But they would be shoes. If someone is so anal about their carpets they don’t accept clean shoes, I would genuinely worry about their health (and decline the invitation most likely, as I’d feel uncomfortable).

I wouldn’t go. I went to a party once where we weren’t warned. My outfit looked ridiculous with trousers trailing on the floor. Never again. Sorry that’s not helpful!

Seems preposterous to me to prioritise your outfit over your relationships, but this is a different situation anyway as guests know in advance.

I have some new/tidy daps that I only wear indoors ie as slippers, they are the same colour as one of my dresses, and I checked with the hosts in advancelast time this came up. Was lovely to have comfy feet.

I'd take my slippers or wear thick socks over my tights (which is tend to do when I'm wearing my boots anyway).

Rainydayinlondon · 04/01/2026 14:57

I think slippers would look ridiculous with a sequined party dress or for a man, black tie and slippers.

Apparently so 🤷🏻‍♀️

@TheFormidableMrsCso you’d wear high heels (even stilettos) to the house of someone who just had their house renovated, including a ludicrously expensive wood floor, which those heels might cause numerous dents in? And if the host asked you the simple favour of removing shoes that might damage their floor, you wouldn’t go to the event?

No, but this is exactly why I decided to forgo the ludicrously expensive wooden floor! I like to wear heels at my own parties, never mind anyone else. And no, I would never ask people to remove shoes nor would I install flooring that people couldn’t actually….walk on?

Jesus. I’ve said how I feel and was clear about it. Go and pick on somebody else.

Quite. However, I am apparently completely unreasonable. For what it’s worth, I have wooden floors. I do not ask people to remove shoes unless they want to.

I cannot believe all these people wouldn’t go to a party just because they couldnt wear outdoors shoes!!!!

When did all this "shoes off" crap start ??
I don't remember EVER taking shoes off , or friends doing so, in my home or my friends homes when I grew up
So precious, and I would simply not attend some party where you have to remove footwear .
Pathetic "shoes off" lot .

I was born in the late 80s and lived in two different areas in the UK between then and the mid 00s and travelled a lot around the UK visited various relatives and old family friends and people my parents knew from different churches they had been to over the years and almost every house I visited was shoes off.

The country I live in now is shoes off for everyone and has been for many decades (probably changed around WWII, when there was a lot less people living as poor miserable subsistence farmers, certainly by the early 50s when my mum was born there)

Rainydayinlondon · 05/01/2026 10:35

I’m in my mid 50s and no one ever took their shoes off u less they were obviously “dirty”. We were told to wipe our feet on the coir doormat.

I’ve also never heard of a shoes off party where shoes will be part of the outfit!

I've always taken shoes off and I'm 48 so not a new thing. Shoes are for outside not for wearing around the house. I have shoes by my patio door for taking the bins out, I have shoes for the garden (an old pair of slippers). Indoors I have slippers. Shoes come off the moment I'm through the door. Most people take theirs off when they see me without shoes on.

Anyway just think of all the unseen dirt on the soles of your shoes.
