What do you wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house?

We were having a discussion at work about what to wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house. Most people felt it was automatically less dressy (say jeans and nice top) because you'd be wearing socks which would look silly if you were all glammed up. Others would go glammed up regardless. Some would be very casual.

All this assumes that the host hasn't specified a dress code. What would you wear?

Even the people I know who are shoes off usually don’t make people take their shoes off at a party.

So they are going to invite people to a party but still insist they take their shoes off? I think that’s really rude actually - party-wear with what? Bare feet? Stocking’d feet? Ugh. Personally I wouldn’t go if that was still the rule, I don’t like walking in other peoples floors without footwear, I don’t know what I’m standing on!

At least you know you wouldn’t be standing on whatever nastiness had been brought in on outdoor shoes.

A dress and tights. I did this today actually and it was fine

Surely no one asks people to take their shoes off at a party?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/12/2025 18:42

Slipper Socks, obvs.

They’re due a revival.

Sesma · 12/12/2025 18:42

I would take my slippers, I can't bear being shoeless

Sesma · 12/12/2025 18:44

Some of these shoes off houses have pets, I wouldn't want to stand shoeless where someone's smelly hound had been

SarahAndQuack · 12/12/2025 18:47

I would assume if it's shoes off it's not going to be formal, is it? It'll be people with small children who are worried about outside dirt, or a family kind of vibe. It'll probably also be food to pick at and children running a bit amok. Which is nice, if they include your children/children you are fond of.

cramptramp · 12/12/2025 18:51

As Carrie Bradshaw once said in Sex and the City ‘these shoes are part of my outfit’. If you don’t want shoes in the house, don’t have a party in your house.

OnARainyDay2012 · 12/12/2025 18:51

It would never occur to me that I would leave my shoes on in someone's house! Although I remember going to my American colleagues house and her being very surprised that I took off my shoes by the door. I'd probably just wear tights or those old lady socks made of tights material if I was wearing trousers. Or my slippers!

QPZM · 12/12/2025 18:52

I wouldn't go all glammed up just so I could look short and dumpy when I removed my shoes 🤣

But I certainly wouldn't wear tights either, having seen someone almost knock themselves out slipping on a shiny, tiled kitchen floor.

She literally split the back of her head open.

BoarBrush · 12/12/2025 18:53

I'd be taking my slippers with me. Far from the first time I've worn a ballgown with my slippers.

sprinklesofadvice · 12/12/2025 18:55

Please don't go barefoot. 😖

As a shoes off house, I would prefer people to wear their wellies than to wander in with their toes touching my floor.

DancingNotDrowning · 12/12/2025 18:58

if you want to have a party that people enjoy, for the love of god allow guests to keep their shoes on.

if you’ve just resurfaced the 18th century parquet in the ballroom then a polite note to say “no stilettos” is acceptable but asking people to remove their shoes because you don’t want dirt on your floors is ridiculous. It’d feel like the most uptight party ever.

Theresabatinmykitchen · 12/12/2025 18:58

I just wouldn’t go, I would feel absolutely ridiculous being all dressed up and then expected to take my shoes off a walk around in either bare feet, socks or slippers. Shoes are part of the outfit for both men and women, if you are going to host a dressy party either do it properly or not at all.

Rainydayinlondon · 12/12/2025 18:59

Shoes ARE part of an outfit.

If anything, I’d bring my party shoes with me and change into them on arrival .

twilightcafe · 12/12/2025 19:06

It'd be a 'thanks but no thanks' from me.
If someone's that precious about guests walking on their floors, don't be a party host.
I'm not attending a party with no nice shoes on.

RaininSummer · 12/12/2025 19:07

Dress with tights and slippers.

leojeojao · 12/12/2025 19:09

Bring slippers or if you have a fancy outfit, bring mule slip on sandals with you! These two options always work for me, depending on the outfit.

PiIIow · 12/12/2025 19:22

I love a good shoes on thread!

Those who claim they wouldn’t go - do you ask the host beforehand or…?

I’m a shoes off person and expect to take my shoes off whenever I go into someone’s house. I visit houses often for work and always offer…. But I can also understand not wanting it sprung up on you at the door.

Ohpleeeease · 12/12/2025 19:26

If you’re asking what to wear I would say something chic like cigarette trousers and flat pumps. But first I’d ask the host. They might not be expecting people to be barefoot.

TheChosenTwo · 12/12/2025 19:32

I’d probably go in my joggers and a sweatshirt - closest to pyjamas I own!
We aren’t a shoes off house, we always take our shoes off when we come indoors but I’d never ask or expect anyone else to - if anyone arrives from a muddy walk or allotment (in-laws!) they always take them off anyway but we have hard floors all downstairs so it’s easily mopped and clean.
We have underfloor heating everywhere so never have cold feet.
Not keen to take my shoes off in some peoples houses where they have pets and bits on their cold floors but that’s personal preference.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/12/2025 20:11

TheFormidableMrsC · 12/12/2025 18:05

I wouldn’t go. I went to a party once where we weren’t warned. My outfit looked ridiculous with trousers trailing on the floor. Never again. Sorry that’s not helpful!

I’d say the same. Shoes off if you’re giving a dressed up sort of party, smacks of OTT clean freak. So TBH I probably wouldn’t be friends with such a person anyway.

Meadowflower2023 · 12/12/2025 20:19

This thread reminds me of my friend’s mums slippers, she wears these. My feet are rarely warm enough in other people’s houses so shoes off would make me uncomfortable for the evening and I’d probably not go.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 12/12/2025 20:20

Ugh I hate being all dressed up for a party and having to take off my nice shoes and be in bare feet or stocking soles.
