What do you wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house?

We were having a discussion at work about what to wear for a xmas party at a shoes off house. Most people felt it was automatically less dressy (say jeans and nice top) because you'd be wearing socks which would look silly if you were all glammed up. Others would go glammed up regardless. Some would be very casual.

All this assumes that the host hasn't specified a dress code. What would you wear?

I also would not go. Fair enough, have a day-to-day rule of shoes off, but inviting guests to get dressed up and come to a party, and then asking them to take off part of their outfit is just rude.

Also, I cannot stand being barefoot or in socks, etc, I need some support for my feet, and I'd worry the host would have palpitations if I accidentally dropped a few crumbs or god forbid spilled a drink, in other words, I would not be comfortable at all.

Those blue plastic ahoe covers

Ok, first thing that popped into my mind was to go dressed as a shoe...

Shoes ARE part of an outfit.

If anything, I’d bring my party shoes with me and change into them on arrival .

Bringing clean party shoes (or fluffy slippers, or giant indoor clean old lady sneakers) is always okay at mine or anyone I’ve been to’s party. And who wants to walk all over in heels when you can just pop them on when you arrive

Gettingbysomehow · 13/12/2025 02:10

I find it so weird people just wouldn't go to a shoeless party. Have you secretly got hooves or something?

RetiredGranny · 13/12/2025 02:18

My party/going out shoes have never walked outdoors; they have only been inside, usually at a hotel function where I am staying. I'm wearing them at your shoes off house! I'd probably wear something else walking up your path, but I'd change into them in your house.

GarlicRound · 13/12/2025 02:27

I bought some rather nice gold leather ballet flats for this purpose. I never got invited anywhere, so now I've worn them outside. There are loads of cheap versions (all colours) though. Wedge-heeled mules are a viable option, too, if you want a bit of height - wedges won't scratch floors.

Oh, pretty much. You ain't seeing my feet unless we're on a beach or in the pool.

Actually, now swimming shoes have been invented - you ain't seeing my feet at all!

Please don't go barefoot. 😖

As a shoes off house, I would prefer people to wear their wellies than to wander in with their toes touching my floor.

Surely no one is this uptight. What on earth do you think people’s skin touching your precious floors is going to do to them?

Even the shoes-off people I know make an exception for parties/dinners. It seems extremely odd, not to mention rude, to expect people to get dressed up then walk around in socks or god forbid slippers. Does anyone actually do this?

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/12/2025 18:24

So they are going to invite people to a party but still insist they take their shoes off? I think that’s really rude actually - party-wear with what? Bare feet? Stocking’d feet? Ugh. Personally I wouldn’t go if that was still the rule, I don’t like walking in other peoples floors without footwear, I don’t know what I’m standing on!

You dont like being in a house where its barefoot because you dont know what you are standing on....

So you would rather wear shoes in their house?
What about them standing in the shit you bring in from outside? 😵‍💫

See this wouldnt work in my shoes off house..
Yes you havent been out in the street but you have been walking around in a hotel, on a dirty floor where others walk with their shoes

I dont want my carpets dirty

Shoes off, or Clean shoe coverings that i offer or you arent coming in

Breadcat24 · 13/12/2025 05:18

Indian jutti wedding shoes are nice light to carry and could be used as slippers

Whatsthatsheila · 13/12/2025 05:26

BDenergy · 12/12/2025 18:06

This! I don’t really understand why shoes off would rule out a dress or skirt.

Tights would make me feel

a) squemish about the fact that I personally don’t feel that they aren’t an effective barrier against foot germs (I have feet ick)

b) im a clumsy motherfucker and those things are so slippy

@Isthisreasonable
i would not be averse to wearing Christmas fluffy socks or slipper socks over my tights though even with a nice outfit cos it’s Christmas and why not!!

in fact if I was hosting said party I would say “it’s shoes off so bring your festive fluffy socks” - bit like christmas jumper day

onetrickrockingpony · 13/12/2025 05:37

We are a shoes off household but I don’t think anyone has ever come in without offering to or immediately taking off their shoes. We’ve not hosted a formal party yet where it’s come up that people bring a change of shoes.

Whenever this topic comes up I always wonder whether the people who are appalled at taking their shoes off all live in places where everyone arrives by car. I live in London and everyone arrives by public transport and then on foot through urban streets. It is automatic whenever we go to anyone’s house that we take our shoes off, and vice versa.

KilliMonjaro · 13/12/2025 06:08

finding the people who wouldn’t go or wouldn’t expect to have fun without shoes on a bit sad.

Meadowflower2023 · 12/12/2025 20:19

This thread reminds me of my friend’s mums slippers, she wears these. My feet are rarely warm enough in other people’s houses so shoes off would make me uncomfortable for the evening and I’d probably not go.

Ooooooh, fluffy mules!!! When I was little, my two very glamorous aunties wore these, and I remember thinking they were the height of sophistication, what a brilliant idea for parties!!!

I wash the soles of ALL my shoes before they get put away, if I was taking indoor shoes to a party they would be clean and straight out of a shoe bag.

Christmaschristingle · 13/12/2025 06:52

I'm going to add a hazmet suit to my surgical shoe covering
If people are so incredibly worried about a shoe getting their carpet dirty even when a pp said that shoe has not been worn outside then the hosts must also worrying a lot clothes on sofa.

Yes my party outfit maybe clean but is my car seat ? Where i sit in my work clothes? And at my work I have to sit in many different seats of different levels of cleanliness.

Ladybugheart · 13/12/2025 06:53

BDenergy · 12/12/2025 18:08

People are so weird about taking their shoes off. When I go to someone’s house I always assume I’ll be taking my shoes off tbh. If I don’t need to it feels weird.

Agree, I don't get this. In can't think of a single family member or friend who wears shoes in their house. It's gross

Christmaschristingle · 13/12/2025 06:54

@Bikergran I'm sure that would be fine if you produced a swab test to prove it.

I'm astonished to hear about this level of protection and worry about germs on a floor. We don't eat off our floors ie use them for anything except to walk on and we definatly don't eat off them

Christmaschristingle · 13/12/2025 06:55

@Ladybugheart loads of people I know do including us and growing up only two families did for cultural reasons

I wouldn’t go. I went to a party once where we weren’t warned. My outfit looked ridiculous with trousers trailing on the floor. Never again. Sorry that’s not helpful!

Ahhh. Same. New Year Party. Large house, hard floors and shoes off. My gorgeous strap silver heels also kept my trousers from sweeping the floor. 🤨

MsGinaLinetti · 13/12/2025 06:59

Or pyjamas. And slightly offensively decorated slippers

Checknotmymate · 13/12/2025 07:01

I am fascinated by people who host parties. Do they enjoy it? Do they assume people coming enjoy it? Surely everyone is just desperate to leave??
