A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Here we go again 🙄

Four mayoral elections due to take place in May have been postponed again until 2028. Essex, Hampshire and the Solent, Sussex and Brighton, and Norfolk and Suffolk.
They should have taken place in 2025, but were delayed until 2026.

My area, which is generally Conservative-leaning. Labour is running scared of losing whatever seats they have down here. It's undemocratic, to say the least, but it won't save their scheming lying skins come the 2029 GE.

Yeah, it's worrying. There's definitely a pattern emerging. Democracy is one of things that has to be seen to be done, even when it is costly or inconvenient and definitely when the optics suggest that you are delaying elections that won't fall to your advantage.

You just have to wonder who on Earth thinks that this is okay and what their thinking is? I suppose if you could answer honestly that this wouldn't be worrying if your least favourite party were doing this, then fine. But I can't help thinking that these very same people would be outraged if say, Reform is pulling this shit in 2029 - and while I'd agree with them - I'd hold them in contempt for their raging hypocrisy.

Ikr. Labour’s version of democracy.

That facial recognition stuff gives me goosebumps. This gov really do scare me.

Yes, the face recognition, the ID cards, jailling for three years without a juried case ...what could go wrong, hey?

I hope my fellow doppelgangers are good eggs.

TheNuthatch · 04/12/2025 09:58

Introduction of mandatory id with no mandate.
Ending trial by jury.
Repeated postponement of elections.
Facial recognition.

Imagine if Reform were doing the above?

There's just nothing sensible or cautious about any of it. It's like they are playing a Sims game and throwing everything into the mix.

And don't forget Leadbeaters euthanasia bill.

Huge changes all over the place and no regard for consequences or fallout.

Apologies, this is completely off-thread. We're paying an overnight visit to Dartmouth and have woken up to a glorious sunny morning. It really lifts the spirits.

Ooh, that sounds nice. We could use a day like that up here.

Scary.

Is Claire Coutinho on many people's radar? I've just watched her in action in parliament and she's great.

She comes across as very capable, but the issue is she was the Climate woman when the Tories were in office. I put them 90%+ responsible for the position we are in regarding energy....which is a mess.

Loads of the Tories are spouting what Labour should and shouldnt do, Kemi amongst them. However when they were in power they did the opposite....perhaps not as destructively bad as Labour but going that way.

They talked right and governed left.

And pretending that the government was neutral about the bill while having plotted its course in opposition.

Good grief.
If that's the case, it should be stopped. Agree with Meg Hillier's comments in that article.
Senior Labour MP Meg Hillier said: 'It's hugely disappointing to see what appears to be an attempt to circumvent the Labour Party's manifesto and policy processes to support a controversial Bill that many Labour MPs and activist just don't support.'This is not how our party should make policy on such a profound issue of life and death, with such far-reaching implications for the NHS and our wider society.'

I agree with every word Kemi has spoken on energy.

With delaying of local elections, their excuse is the local government reorganisation. I actually don't know who wanted this reorganisation. Does anyone here know?

This is slightly off topic for where we are currently, but I watched the latest Triggernometry interview with Graham Linehan. at the very end, like the last 10 minutes, they talked about politics and society more generally. One thing Graham mentioned was that in the past, you could be confident that somebody knew how to do their job, e.g. the bank manager etc Now there is this sense of nobody knowing what they're doing. And he said that it's like if you opened the cockpit door and just found the cockpit was empty - applying across all areas.

I know exactly what he means, and it really bothers me. I posted about it on here, and I mentioned it in context of work, and the threads didn't get any engagement really.

I asked a couple of contacts about it - I realise you have to be careful about that - and one of them said she thinks it's a demotivation issue. But the other actually said to me bluntly "you know what, I am terrible at getting back to people, I have left people waiting weeks for a response, so I'm not in a position to complain". And she's quite casual about it.

In a way, I do think it's a reflection of politics. If nobody can be bothered with administration, everything falls apart. Worse than that, you get people proposing crazy "solutions" which in turn starts me off wondering if all the neglect and decline is deliberate. Because it's much easier to bring in a new system when you can argue that the old one doesn't work at all, even if it's a fake argument, how many people are going to see that?

I have got the big 50 coming up next year. I'm sorry if this comment doesn't belong on this thread, but it's another example of "hopefully I won't be here when the shit really hits the fan". But it does seem to be speeding up. Which it always was going to under a Labour government.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/12/2025 11:44

Actually, I'm going to stick my neck out on this thread and say that maybe the lack of professionalism is because a kind of public sector mentality has crossed over into private sector. Is that possible?

or is it just a natural consequence of people being unbothered about doing anything - which is pervasive across all sections of society, I think

I don't think you need to worry about it being in the wrong place. I'm just not sure if I have thought about it enough to respond usefully to that observation.

I guess that it is easy to see the broad shifts in society as being motivated by grand theory or politics but I suppose the idea that these shifts are the product of (or at is at least paved the way for by) an entirely demoralised population is feasible but almost too gloomy to absorb in one hit.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/12/2025 12:30

@Upstartled sorry for the gloominess!

I think I was just relieved to hear the cockpit analogy because I sometimes find myself going "is it just me?" But being honest, I don't really say this stuff to anyone except my mum - I hadn't thought of it has been too depressing. That's a helpful comment. I actually avoid the topic because I wonder if it just makes me sound like a crazy person and perhaps like an out of date person who isn't getting on well with the more relaxed attitude that seems to be prevalent.
