Way things are going that might need to be Heil Kiers...😬

Its not quite that bad Pandora, these reforms aren't as radical as the Tories in 2022 and with Rwanda. There is a good base to these proposals away from the anti asylum rhetoric.

I just sigh heavily every time a Labour MP outlines a Reform-From-Wish policy now. It’s a shame, because our current Labour MP is competent, understands her constituency, unflappable in the face of idiotic social media comments and clearly dedicated to representing people according to her core Labour values. She’ll lose her seat in the next GE for certain, it’s too new and precarious for her to be let down repeatedly and catastrophically by leadership.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek, but some of what is being proposed is fairly radical.

Well I was worried about being under a Reform council next year, or a Reform government in 2029 - doesn’t seem to matter so much with current government rhetoric 😞
I’m not against immigration reform - I’m very against the language used around it and - yet again - the lack of facts including distinction between asylum seekers, ones waiting appeal, and illegal immigrants. Ditto lack of honesty re needed immigration and why people come here and an effort to make people understand humanity is not a dirty word.
I never really say this, as don’t want to cause further rabid frothing (on most threads, I know not on here) but vast majority of actual illegal migration is those overstaying visas, not those risking lives via the seas.
The removal of jewellery on arrival is one part of these reforms that simply appals and saddens me 😞

It won’t happen. I think it’s there quite specifically as an element to give up in the horse trading with the parliamentary party.

Sorry. I should turn around, touch the ground and say three Hail Keirs, forthwith.

I'm meeting my sister soon and Hail Marys and the Rosary post my mother's death brought us into tears of laughter which I and she managed to make out were tears of grief. On the day of her funeral and burial those tears of grief were real.

Not sure if this is a metaphor for things to come. It might be though.

PandoraSocks · 17/11/2025 18:17

I agree @msjinks . I am disgusted with Labour. Some of the language in that document I linked to is Reform-worthy.

PickAChew · 17/11/2025 18:18

I hope not - I am not sure on all Labour support anyway, though maybe it’s not too necessary as Kemi isn’t against this - though ever political agendas will push the final voting from other parties.
I tend to agree with Ed Davey - just catch up on cases - sort out what they’ve already got in hand- I often agree with Ed though, which may be my more natural vote, or maybe he keeps it simple and reasonable.
A lot of what is suggested is already available- return of refugees if country is safe, particularly the Home Office can revoke refugee status if they go on holiday to where is claimed to be unsafe - returns and Article 8 family life is subjective, not prescribed.
The 20 year settlement is ridiculous though. and previously open to immigrants here irregularly for that length of time any way, might be still, but for me very much implying asylum claimants are illegal again.
I am fed up with this today - but would still be 100x more fed up with NF in power!

Agree this is not my Labour Party or language I expect from them am spectacularly pissed off.
Placemats 💐
My Labour MP is excellent very engaged with the local communities is really visible & works very hard in fostering being accessible, it’s a new constituency which was Tory for a very long time my ward & few others were tacked onto it so did make it more winnable for Labour as our wards were for many many years a safe Labour seat but he won mainly because was a lot of very fed up Tory voters who knows how it would play out at the next election.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2025 18:59

An take on the new policy paper
https://bsky.app/profile/colinyeo.bsky.social/post/3m5tl62ggns25

And that's it. Overall impressions are
- there's still a surprising lack of detail
- lots of new work for officials but unlikely to lead to much change on the ground
- refugees will still live here rest of their lives but will struggle even more than before to integrate

I’m reserving judgement until we see where this ends up. Half the problem for the last few years has been outrage and knee jerk reaction. I suspect the final version will look different.

Oh, this is just dreadful for this poor woman.

She should buy British in future.

placemats · 17/11/2025 19:12

There's always a shock click bait headline. Even when it comes to political reporting.

I meet up regularly with my Labour MP as I'm a member and it's nothing like the headlines or the social media content.

She needs to earn money so it's obvious how the headline will work. All journalists have little say over the headline click.

bombastix · 17/11/2025 20:46

I think it’s just me but I think Mahmood is doing an a star job. She has previously shown some real toughness and skill in taking on perceived liberal orthodoxy and getting a successful policy and a political win.

I agree that this will be adjusted and some of it has been uprated for concessions later. Intelligent political thinking therefore.

Our Home Secretary is something of a political star. She seems genuinely brilliant to me in terms of handling these challenges that people throw at her. I admire her style even more after this debate.

placemats · 17/11/2025 20:55

It's all very well for the Green Party and the Lib Dems to criticise, but please add what each prospective party would do as well. We're listening.

I agree with you @bombastix , it takes guts to present a debate that's unsavoury and yet still win.

The daft narrative that we are all Labour loyalists or cultists isn't rooted in any sort of reality.

The problem is some of them just can't read past the thread title. They see 'Starmer' and just assume we're all Labour devotees. It doesn't seem to matter how many times it is explained that these threads have always included the name of the current PM. They can't actually be bothered reading the posts to see how many of us aren't actually Labour supporters.

Newsnight, Laila Cunningham can get to fuck. How dare she use the trauma of abused women and children to further her racist agenda, and then to claim other parties don't support women and children.

It was like the worst of mnet. She should be ashamed.

She might post on Mumsnet for all we know. She'd probably have a lot in common with the more unpleasant posters whose views have become normalised on here now.

Some of the stuff posted recently would have been roundly condemned even a few months ago.

For those reading this thread Laila Cunningham is a Reform councillor on Westminster Council, representing Lancaster Gate.

I agree totally with you @LlttledrummergirI

PandoraSocks · 17/11/2025 23:48

Urgh. I just watched a clip. You are absolutely right @LlttledrummergirI and @ilovesooty She sounds like the worst of mn. I also had a quick look at her Twitter and it is vile.
