You may have missed this gem yesterday. From which we learn that:

1. Betting shops are really good for the mental health of isolated people.
2. Most drug-takers are not a problem.
3. Kids put tuppence in slot machines in the hope of getting rich.
4. Farage probably has a gambling industry donor.

Cannot deny the man's talent for presenting bullshit as fact without even a twitch.

He says he "never wins big". Well he has certainly won the grifter's lottery.

How can sensible people fall for this utter tripe?

Notonthestairs · 11/11/2025 10:37

Take this week and last weeks 'announcements' together.

Farage is signalling to finance and gambling industries that he will de-regulate.

Both industries are significant political donors (to Conservative and Labour coffers).

Farage wants a slice of their donations.

He probably realises he can't live off Tice forever - or maybe he just doesnt want to be tied to Tice.

Either way I read the annoucements as hints he'll get rid of nasty old post financial crash regulations and anything to do with gambling safety.
Yeehaw. (I'm sure there is a cowboy emoji somewhere)

Given the specific nature of his constituency - and the destruction of its character and economy by betting shops and run down arcades- this is interesting.

Did we post about the poverty stats last week? His constituency contains the very poorest pocket of deprivation in the whole of England. He does so much to represent them.

I read that earlier @Efacsen. Agree that the intimidation is real with potentially awful consequences.

SerendipityJane · 11/11/2025 11:07

Efacsen · 11/11/2025 10:57

Unintended consequences for the poor patients and obviously horrible for the professionals

NHS staff who visit patients at home say St George’s flags can mean ‘no-go zones’ | NHS | The Guardian

Unintended consequences

I suspect they were certainly intended by some.

BIWI · 11/11/2025 11:14

I’m also hopeless at crafting @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats - I just about managed to knit a few squares for Woolly Hugs, but they were always a bit wonky! Anything more complicated is way beyond me.

And as for sewing/needlework - when we were at school and it was compulsory for girls to do needlework, my teacher was so frustrated with my efforts making a dress, that she took it off me and finished it for me Grin

Intended to intimidate certainly, but I suspect not bright enough to think about the consequences.

I never managed to finish my school sewing project, either.

dontcallmelen · 11/11/2025 11:34

Neither did I got as far as a half finished apron, was the sum total of all my needlework lessons at school.a

PandoraSocks · 11/11/2025 11:45

Half finished red skirt for me.

DuncinToffee · 11/11/2025 11:49

Police have named the couple they’re looking for in connection to a racist incident on the tube and they’re wealthy Trump supporters and founders of an “anti-woke” PR firm.

Good. Are they still in the UK? I think using pepper spray is quite a serious offence. What a trashy pair they are.

Eta: they are also very stupid. They have a public profile. These days that means any shitty behaviour will result in SM hunting you down.

Epping Forest Council has lost its bid to close The Bell Hotel.

The hotel will remain open to asylum seekers.

In conversation last week a friend told me that it took the BBC investigation to uncover the vape shop/nail bar etc
black economy scandals.
I did politely tell them that this was already being investigated by Labour as far back as March this year by the NCA coordinated Operation Machinize. It does make me cross that as @SerendipityJane said up thread, people do not always look at the facts behind the propoganda
IMO the BBC made it look like they had uncovered it .
I do understand though that many people are not that interested in politics.
I am in favour of Labour's devolution policy to give more power to local areas. Last sunday's services showed that there are still so many good people in the UK, whole communities coming together and supporting each other.
Lest we forget.

I’m also confused.

@cardibach very envious of your musical talent. I have absolutely none. We went to see The Choral yesterday about the staging of The Dream of Gerontius during WWI. Beautiful music. I would love to be able to sing.

Edited

Thanks, I’m nothing special but I’ve worked at it and it enriches my life. I really want to see The Choral. May take myself for a trip to the Everyman as it’s comfy there!

BIossomtoes · 11/11/2025 08:34

I too would love to be able to sing. And play the saxophone. And eat fire. Sadly, it’s too late for the latter two and no amount of training can cure tone deafness.

Never too late for the sax! Doesn’t matter how good (or not) you get, it’ll bring you joy. Give it a whirl.
I have walked on fire but don’t fancy eating it.

I have a reasonable voice, but nothing like my mum. She was the leading lady for years of the Leeds Amateur Operatic Society and the Headingly Amateur Operatic Society, both of whom performed at The Grand Theatre in Leeds. She was in a choir that sang with Harry Secombe on the opening credits of his Sunday show, and also had a solo spot on The Good Old Days (for those of us old enough to remember that!)

I have a huge box of photos and press cuttings from her performances, along with some fabulous photographs of her in her (beautiful) stage costumes.

Wow! That’s amazing. What lovely memories. My daughter is much more talented than I am and it makes me so proud to listen to her.

Government doing good thing again, which I presume won't appear on certain other threads...

of course when all of this good stuff starts to pay dividends the cunts will be back in power and claiming all the credit.

Half finished red skirt for me.

I finished a purple skirt but never wore it due to it being horrible. Not entirely my fault, the pattern was grim.

Absolutely disgusted to hear about the racism Wes Streeting mentions here directed at school children who were visiting Parliament.

He has taken the post down, rightly, to protect the children.

But it's wrong that he had to do it.

Disgusted with so many people in our country. Racism is never OK.
