Yes I know. I can't read it properly either and the guardian doesn't seem to be reporting it.

Just was a bit shocked that she is going to tax electric drivers per mile. It seems no where is safe. You can't even leave the country without being taxed now that they are considering (or is it definately happening?) an exit tax on leaving the UK.

As most EVs are made in China and report back their usage/location etc back to the Chinese Government, could we ask them to set up a charging service?

On the BBC website. Sounds a complicated system too, how’s this going to encourage drivers to move to electric vehicles?

Thanks for posting another article on it.

I just feel like like these types of taxes are very sneaky. They encourage people to buy electric cars and then once lots have they hit them with something like this that they can't avoid.

A bit like the mansion tax idea. They hit people with it after people have committed to buying/living in their house.

Much harder to get out of things once you have bought them than to know about it before hand and take it into account during your decision making.

Proof as if it were needed that Reeves is fucking clueless, an idiot and should be sacked.

This is a pathway to penalise drivers of all cars - shes finally realised that pushing people into EVs means a drop in tax revenue from petrol/diesel cars.

Given that EV infrastructure is piss poor, unreliable and expensive, her only saving grace is that EVs will never replace ICE cars on a 1-for-1 basis in anyones lifetime here on this site. Probably wont even happen in the next lifetime either.

Reeves is a fucking liar - lies about her CV, house rental and no doubt other stuff. She is a corrupt politician who gives zero fucks about the people impacted by her incompetence.

Do they really? Gosh.

What on earth is the chinese goverment doing with that information. I mean it seems pretty useless.

Still don't like the idea of being monitored although I guess it is happening everywhere via your phone, your clubcard, your internet use etc

I'd be so pissed off if I bought an EV then they taxed by the mile. Wasn't half the pushing point a 'look no tax' if you own one'? Normal car tax would be fair since they also contribute to road wear and tear. I can't see how taxing some of the country per mile but not the rest is fair. I'd also be livid if they taxed us all per mile when half the country has shit public transport!

What do mean a pathway to penalise all drivers? Do you think she is going to bring in a pay per mile tax for all cars eventually (ie including petrol/diesel cars).

That will create quite a bill for those with a long commute and probably have a very negative impact on the car sales in this country. I guess railways might be rubbing their hands in glee though if they think lots of people will have to switch from cars to trains.

I agree plus won't sales of electric vehicles just plummet (plus values of existing ones on the road).

I have a petrol car - very small and getting on a bit in age. My car tax is only £20 per year. Definately glad i stuck with it, although I better not talk too soon.

She is already ... VAT on electric!

Oabrbjr · 06/11/2025 10:58

The threat of it is enough to stall EV sales right away. I don't have an EV, but if I had been thinking of getting one, I certainly wouldn't be doing that now!

This govt is just so incompetent. So many times on here before the election, stuff like "the adults will be in charge" was spouted. What utter shite. We have inexperienced halfwits in charge and they are destroying us more every day. I would emigrate if I was a bit younger.

GingerBeverage · 06/11/2025 10:59

This had to happen sometime.

Cinnamon77 · 06/11/2025 11:00

I thought we were all meant to be incentivised to buy EV cars for the environment?

On the hand our energy bills are so high to pay for net zero but on the other we have to pay more for EV cars.

Make it make sense!

They did it with diesel.

JassyRadlett · 06/11/2025 11:05

ICE drivers already pay a tax based on how much they drive through fuel duty. The shift to EVs means less tax paid - ICE road users essentially pay per mile already (variable depending on the efficiency of their vehicle.)

As a PP said, as the shift to electric vehicles gathers pace this has always been likely given fuel duty raises about £24bn a year. If you're driving an ICE car, you're paying around £600 on average a year.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 06/11/2025 11:17

Yes this is as it should be. EV’s are heavy and damage the roads to a greater extent than ICE cars. As pp mentioned ICE car drivers essentially pay a per mile tax as the more fuel they buy the greater the tax they pay. It’s ridiculous that EV’s had no or low car tax anyway (finally ended this April) how will any government find money to keep roads in good repair etc?

I do have to wonder how many EV drivers upset by this proposal were quite happy when other taxes were raised that didn’t affect them (eg VAT on school fees - some people were vitriolic on here to private school parents about that).

I thought they ran on ‘greener’ pre GE too

Usual load of bollocks made up by the right wing press. The budget isn't until the 26th until then it's all froth and speculation.

MeouwKing · 06/11/2025 11:35

Cycling is tax-free, good for the environment and good for your health, so long as you don't get hit by an SUV

Did you see Reeves did a pre budget press conference? She’s rather keen it’s talked about.

NutButterOnToast · 06/11/2025 11:41

Absolute joke.

EVs are more expensive than an equivalent ICE car, the incentive being lower running costs meaning you come out on top eventually.

Where's the incentive now if this becomes reality and where is the money going to come from to monitor all of this?

They should leave home charging alone, a lot of people have signed up to solar or green energy to power their cars (including me) and any "fuel duty" should be charged at public rapid chargers.

What the fuck is the point of this government? Productivity in this country is dire. Our public transport is shit so people rely on their cars. This is not going to help!

Gingercatlover · 06/11/2025 11:42

FFS! Wish I had kept my low emission diesel with no tax then!

I pay Road Tax on my EV already and I pay to charge either via my electric bill at home or at a charge point
Now I am going to get charged per mile as well?
I run my car through my business so I have no idea how it will all work
