@Sartre. Hybrid drivers also buy petrol which has tax attached.

electric vehicles use roads too and currently they don’t pay plus demand money to be spend putting in charging infrastructure etc. my petrol car costs more than 3p a mile to run in taxes and we have no choice due to lack of charging at home

It will be done through the mot which records the mileage every year already. Personally I have no problem with paying my way to use the roads.

Not very clued up are you?

For new vehicles that do not have an MOT for the first three years, how exactly is their mileage "recorded"?

SMH.

DH had many existing EV orders cancelled yesterday by customers even though the charge is not due for several years citing the principle.

This is the problem, though. For most people, a car is an investment, and they need to think and plan ahead several years.

If it were, say, an announcement of a significant new tax on meals out at restaurants starting in 2028, and people reacted by cancelling the table they have booked for next Saturday, that would make no sense; but if you're planning on buying a new car now and maybe keeping it for 10 years, why on earth wouldn't you stop and re-consider whether you still want to go ahead if the majority of that time will now cost you considerably more?

Plus, now the principle is in place, who knows how much it could go up to in the near future? And you'll also have a less attractive prospect for buyers when you come to re-sell your car.

Not very polite are you? It’s literally what the government has announced, with new vehicles being checked annually around the registration date. Mumsnet used to be a place for rational and reasonable discourse.

I wasnt impolite at all.

Just said you werent clued up, which is true based off your remark about vehicle checks/MOT, which dont apply to new cars.

If you are offended by facts, then I cannot help you.

Also, the Govt hasnt yet spelt out how or who or when new car mileages will be checked either - distinct lack of detail all round thus far.

Yes this is one of the taxes I was utterly baffled by, particularly because hybrids will somehow cost less than EV. Make it make sense.

Happy to help it make sense.

The hybrid is already paying tax per mile (at a significantly higher rate than the EV rate) for the miles it drives on petrol.

Pedallleur · 28/11/2025 18:07

You can all be sure that it WONT be the car makers who will be paying. They might provide the facility but in the end the owners will pay. I can see makers offering an incentive of 1000 free miles or a special charging rate.
