I understood their flawed point perfectly well.

You and the other poster do not understand mine.

Once you have paid for your taxed fuel, whether you do one mile or a hundred, you arent taxed again until you fill up. Ergo, you are NOT taxed via Pay Per Mile.

PPM on EVs would be a perfect pathway to taxing conventional cars on PPM on top of what they pay in fuel duty.

Stunned that (some) people cant see that.

Stunned that you can't see that using fuel is the same as taxing by mile.

Jamesblonde2 · 06/11/2025 18:31

She said no-one is protected. There you go. I’ve already been hammered since this government has come in. Detest the woman and Labour.

Indeed. My car does about 20mpg. So I’m already paying more fuel tax per mile than most. (And £600 road tax per year.)

This only penalises people with long commutes that usually drive on A Roads and motorways. Yet again we penalise people trying to get to work on purpose built roads whereas people doing unnecessarily short journeys clogging up town centres and residential streets out off sheer laziness pay less.

This. The people going to work probably on higher tax rate, already paying a shed load.

It would be if the cost of that tax thru fuel duties was spread over the mileage that is done.

Some cars will do more miles per gallon than others - so the rate varies.

Clearly, physics is beyond you. A flat rate fuel tax is not equitably spread over "a mile" for any car - especially when some can and do go further.

JFC. Its like talking to Rachel Lying Reeves. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

ScaredAndPanicky · 06/11/2025 18:56

I have had an electric car for 10 years.
I have no particular issue with paying by mile. That fits with the extra tax on petrol.
What I object to is they expect you to estimate your mileage at the beginning of the year. Pay all that tax in a lump sum. Then if you don't use it all they don't refund the difference but credit it to you for future years (what if you sell your car?). At least the tax on fuel happens as you use it not all in one go.

Pedallleur · 06/11/2025 19:01

Unfortunately this was always lurking in the background. Fuel duty raises 24 billion. As that falls with electric take up something was going to happen. Really it's road pricing by stealth. And you know that any party winning the next election won't repeal it.

CosyDenimShark · 06/11/2025 19:10

This is quite worrying for us. DH is a taxi driver who does regular airport runs (SW England - London) and is also training to be a driving instructor. He has a hybrid vehicle. The report I read says that hybrids are next but at a slightly lower rate than EV's. There has to be some sort of exemption for jobs like this, it's insane.

quiteathome · 06/11/2025 19:22

I was thinking about going electric. Not going to bother now or at least until I know more. I have fairly long commute to my job so I was looking at electric to reduce running costs.

They give with one hand then take with both

Winteriscoming80 · 06/11/2025 19:34

We already pay more tax on the car for the first 5 years thanks to her!

jasflowers · 06/11/2025 19:41

Mumofoneandone · 06/11/2025 17:39

It's an absolutely ridiculous suggestion, but what you expect from this government.
I'm already paying a huge amount in road tax for my electric. It went from £0 to just shy of £200 this April for a little Zoe. My DHs diesel is only £20 per year!!!

My DDs 12 yo Polo is £280 whats your point??

£20 tax is for very low emission vehicles registered before spring 2017, very few qualify.

PPM is never ever going to happen....

We are far more likely to see tolls on Motorways, thats next weeks Tory scare story btw.

lalalapland · 06/11/2025 19:41

JassyRadlett · 06/11/2025 15:11

Pretty great though that you've got all that lovely solar so you're able to do so many of your car charges for no cost at all, including tax.

So yes.- it would be an additional tax on what you're paying now, because currently you're paying extremely little compared to the majority of road users. But still less tax than when you were driving an ICE vehicle. What a nice bonus - a number of years off paying for the cost of using the roads!

Well if you want to ignore my monthly payment for solar then yes, no cost at all 🙃 The reduction in tax is/was supposed to support reduction in emissions

The government chop and change their priorities more often than I change my socks. Now we see hypocrite Kier at COP30...

EasternStandard · 06/11/2025 14:35

Yep it’s just filling in the money Labour lost due to last budget and sky high debt servicing.

Yep. I wouldn't mind if the condition of the roads actually improves. But call me cynical...

TheGenuineOz · 06/11/2025 20:45

TheFairyCaravan · 06/11/2025 13:42

It says “could” not will.

I’ve got an EV and this would not bother me at all. We’ve had it a year, done just over 8000 miles and the charging has cost me £160. If I have to add on £240 as a pay per mile, it’s still a huge saving on my previous diesel car.

Has it though, really? Let's assume your car does 300 miles per charge, thats 26 charges. 160/26 is just over 6, so it's costing you £6 to charge from nothing to full? If it's that cheap, you've either paid for solar panels and a battery, you're charging off someone else's electricity or you own national grid because electricity isn't that cheap.

Doris86 · 07/11/2025 08:58

She hasn’t finally realised that. It’s always been known by government, and most EV owners, that a pay per mile tax would need to come at some. She has decided that now is the time.

The total tax paid by EV drivers will still be very little compared to the taxes on petrol.

Paul2023 · 07/11/2025 09:03

I recently got a second hand electric car. To be honest second hand ones are now the same price ( in lots of cases ) as petrol and diesel cars. I switched to electric because I needed a new car and also it’s much cheaper than running a petrol or diesel cars for the 60 odd miles a day I do for work.

Most electric cars barely do 200 miles so you have to accept the range isn’t as good as a diesel car.

But when the pay per miles comes in i’ll be no better off really. So I may aswell go back to running a polluting diesel and not worry about charging my car.

Also how do they expect people to estimate their mileage and then pay it in one lump sum? This will also I suspect get dodgy people to do ‘clocking ‘ like they did in the old days.

Edited

If your car can go further on a gallon of fuel then it is more efficient/enviromentally friendly. So fuel duty is a tax based on a combination of mileage and environmental damage. So in that respect it’s quite a fair tax.

No not the same as pay per mile though.

Exactly what I was thinking. These people that say how cheap it is to charge an EV don’t always mention how they’ve spent thousands on solar panels and a battery!

Most people can’t afford solar panels or a battery - you also have to consider how long you plan on living at your property to get your money back .

Paul2023 · 07/11/2025 09:19

People who say they don’t mind paying per mile who own electric cars. Apart from you wanting to do your bit for the planet ( I don’t think it’ll even touch the sides anyway ) what’s the incentive now ? By the time you charge your cars and pay per miles you’re barely better off than a combustion engine.

And a combust engine doesn’t have to worry about range. Most electric cars barely do 200 miles , its actually more like 170 in real terms.

So I do 15000 a year I may as well go back to buying a second hand diesel in 2028.

Paul2023 · 07/11/2025 09:25

PuppyPadsAreHereAgain · 06/11/2025 10:51

What do mean a pathway to penalise all drivers? Do you think she is going to bring in a pay per mile tax for all cars eventually (ie including petrol/diesel cars).

That will create quite a bill for those with a long commute and probably have a very negative impact on the car sales in this country. I guess railways might be rubbing their hands in glee though if they think lots of people will have to switch from cars to trains.

Im a prison officer. I travel 30 miles a day each way. I work shifts meaning I work Xmas day , Boxing Day. I sometimes start at 7am and finish at 9pm.

My prison is rural. The nearest trail station from there is 5 miles away. How would I get to work from a train station ? My nearest rail station is 3 miles away. How would I get there?

Buses don’t run until after 6 am where I am and the first trains would make me late for work.

I have to drive.

Doris86 · 07/11/2025 09:26

jasflowers · 06/11/2025 14:21

Surely you realised you'd have to contribute to road repairs?

Indeed. Anyone who bought an EV and didn’t expect any taxes on it in future is very naive.

Paul2023 · 07/11/2025 09:26

Cinnamon77 · 06/11/2025 12:24

Apparently it's going to be more expensive to run an EV car than a petrol car in the UK after the Budget.

It's hard to believe any Chancellor can be this incompetent

Exactly this! Which is why I’ll go back to a diesel car when it comes in !
