My sister joked about my getting Botox in front of a room full of people

I told my sister I got Botox for the first time a month or so ago. Asked her not to tell anyone (my parents are old school and would be affronted). It was my surprise brothers 40th party recently and my sister joked in front of everyone that if it was my birthday you wouldn’t know I was surprised as my fave doesn’t move. Queue everyone looking at me and my mom asking me later on if it’s true. My sister says it was a joke and I’m overreacting but it really embarrassed me and also broke my trust

Aside from the joke being actually quite funny, it’s not good cricket by your sister.

That being said, I really don’t get het up about sharing what I’ve done or not done to myself so I wouldn’t care a fig who knew, anyway.

traintonowheretoday · 04/11/2025 07:51

Why have Botox if you aren’t going to own your decision? What’s embarrassing about it? At some point people would get suspicious about your face not moving / aging so you could hardly keep secret and if no one noticed what would have been the point in getting it done

I get that. And if it was common knowledge I guess it would have been funnier but everyone then asking did that mean I had Botox and it made a fool of me, epically when I asked her specifically not to say

I am sure people can see with the their own eyes that you’ve had Botox

I’m happy that I got it but I don’t want. to broadcast it to the world. I’ve told my friends and my sister and I guess if someone asked I would tell them. But it’s my first time getting it and I was worried it would be super obvious so still a bit not ready to tell the world. It’s not embarrassing to get Botox, I’m saying she embarrassed me in front of the party

It wasn't very kind when she knew you didn't want to tell people.

OnlyFangs · 04/11/2025 07:53

Bad form by your sister, yes.

But it's normally pretty obvious when someone has had Botox even when they kid themselves it's subtle.

It changes facial expressions in an unsettling way

Ok well that aside. If you asked your sister not to tell someone and her announced it basically to everyone in your family, is that ok?

But surely the whole point of things like Botox is to make a difference to your face eg reduce wrinkles. If you can’t see a difference what’s the point of having it?

Yes that’s why I got it. But didn’t want it announced to a whole room for everyone to turn and look

No it’s not ok of your sister. Also, I have a few friends who I was shocked to find out have had Botox! It isn’t always obvious.

Luxio · 04/11/2025 07:57

To be honest whilst it wasn't great of her to say anything after you'd asked her not to I think you're kidding yourself if you don't think people have already noticed. It's pretty obvious in my experience when someone has had botox.

Yes I agree. I also don’t mind now telling people (of my choosing) or if people want to ask but think that was just nasty

Edited

It’s not that I don’t think anyone noticed. I know my parents wouldn’t notice because they are elderly and just out of touch in general. I’m not worried about anyone noticing as such, I’m upset she embarrassed me about it in front of my whole family especially when I specifically asked her not to

I get why you're upset. You asked her not to say anything, but she did and embarrassed you. That's mean of her. I agree with PP about botox, but that's not the point. She was mean. 💐

DickDewey · 04/11/2025 08:01

*Cue.

A bit annoying on her part, but not worth being upset over.

My eyebrows always go Spock-like until I go back after 2 weeks and get it corrected. So no-one can miss when I get Botox.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 04/11/2025 08:01

That was really shitty of your sister.

People are being unsympathetic because Botox seems to make people judgemental on MN.

The point is, it doesn’t matter what it was you asked your sister to keep to herself - she chose to weaponise your secret to take the piss out of you. Horrible behaviour.

Thank you. That’s how I feel.
im not embarrassed about getting Botox and I’m happy with the results. If someone asked me at the party I would have said yes but I agree she was being horrible

She was mean and snarky because you told her not to mention it . And no, not everyone can tell you’ve had Botox . I get my 11s done every now and again ,not one person can tell.

pastaandpesto · 04/11/2025 08:06

FFS at the PPs falling over themselves in bringing their personal opinions about Botox to the thread. The fact this is about Botox is completely irrelevant.

OP of course you are not being unreasonable. You told your sister in confidence about something is personal to you that you feel sensitive about. Not only has she broken that confidence, but she did it publicly, for the sake of a laugh. I'd be absolutely furious and deeply disappointed.

Screwyoucolin · 04/11/2025 08:06

Your Sister is an arsehole. Despite PP seemingly ignorant to the fact you asked her not to tell anyone you are not wrong here. Whether anyone else notices or not is not the point. Don't share anything with her again that you don't want to become common knowledge.

someepeoplearenice · 04/11/2025 08:08

Yeah, she was mean to make you the butt of a joke. Especially as you told her in confidence. Still, at least you found out she is untrustworthy over a minor thing. You’ll know not to confide anything important now.

Have to say, I love the idea of your surprise brother having a party 😀

TattooStan · 04/11/2025 08:10

That was a shit thing for your sister to do. I don't tell anyone (even DH) that I get botox, but I mean I don't tell ANYONE.
You should have kept it to yourself.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 04/11/2025 08:10

It was a shitty thing for your sister to do. Does she have form for this kind of thing? I'd definitely be having words with her

Noone can tell I've had it done. My mum would be horrified and hasn't noticed. Because I've not had my eyes done, I still have lots of laughter lines when I smile, so still look like me.
