My sister joked about my getting Botox in front of a room full of people

I told my sister I got Botox for the first time a month or so ago. Asked her not to tell anyone (my parents are old school and would be affronted). It was my surprise brothers 40th party recently and my sister joked in front of everyone that if it was my birthday you wouldn’t know I was surprised as my fave doesn’t move. Queue everyone looking at me and my mom asking me later on if it’s true. My sister says it was a joke and I’m overreacting but it really embarrassed me and also broke my trust

In most contexts its ‘bad form’ to use another person as source of fun/entertainment/scrutiny therefore imo she owes you an apology for this public ‘faux pas’ and also for sharing info you had said was private. She risks loosing your trust with such behaviour.

Regardless whether it was really secret or not, or a good plan to get Botox these are not the point of this issue.

You told your sister in confidence and made a point of saying to her to not tell anyone else. Instead, in front of a room full of people, she made a comment, that essentially told everyone you've had Botox. Is this her normal type of behaviour? Do you usually have to be careful what you tell her? It could have been a slip of the tongue but it seemed rather deliberate to me. Had she been drinking? Some people get loose-lipped.

It will be - otherwise there's no point in paying out money or putting yourself through those procedures. The whole point is to create a noticeable difference (with 'noticeable' covering a wide ground), and as people age that difference becomes more obvious.

That’s not universally true. Some people have it to avoid wrinkles deepening.

Oh cry me a river! Stop taking yourself so seriously or those wrinkles will come back in no time!

Not with the Botox they won’t. But you were just trying to stick the boot in, factual correctness irrelevant, right?

Jasperis · 06/11/2025 05:20

It was nasty of your sister. The botox is irrelevant. You confided in her and she used that to make you look an idiot. Do you think she feels competitive with you?

That was really shitty of your sister.

People are being unsympathetic because Botox seems to make people judgemental on MN.

The point is, it doesn’t matter what it was you asked your sister to keep to herself - she chose to weaponise your secret to take the piss out of you. Horrible behaviour.

exactly this. Some people seem to be using your thread to take a swipe at Botox users. Of course it isn't always obvious.

It was a really mean betrayal of your trust by your sister,if my sister or someone else did something like that to me, it would really damage our relationship. It shows zero consideration for your feelings. Sorry it happened

Those wrinkles will deepen over time - the passage of time means lines are inevitable and they will become more noticeable, even if you do put botox in your face. Nothing to fear or worry about.

What you’ve said is so glaringly obvious that I’m not sure if you’re trying to be helpful or sarcastic 🙂

Just in case it’s helpful, I’m not scared. Perhaps you replied to the wrong post.

Ok well that aside. If you asked your sister not to tell someone and her announced it basically to everyone in your family, is that ok?

Your sister was being a bitch never tell her anything again she’s probably jealous.

Genuinely don't understand why botox should be taboo?

Agree. It’s so weird.

I have Botox every 4 months, amongst other treatments. It’s not a secret. Why should it be?

Most people I know have regular Botox.

It’s no different to colouring your hair to cover greys.

Neither - I was stating a fact. Wrinkles will simply deepen over time, regardless of Botox - there's no way for people to avoid that. .

What's a "surprise brother"?

It doesn’t really matter whether it’s weird if the op would rather people didn’t know. It’s her choice. Which her sister chose to ignore in a bitchy way.
