Just wondering really, what age you did all these things?

Also is there expectations in life to do these things?

First house 24, engaged 25, married 26, child 28. Been married 15 years.

yonem · 20/09/2025 16:33

Bought first house - 24
Engaged - 30 (together since 21)
Married - 30
First child - currently TTC, I’m 30 now so 31 or later depending how long it takes!
Also currently selling the first house/buying second house

I don’t think there is any expectation for any of it. DH’s parents never married and they’ve been together for over 30 years. There’s no expectation that people will have kids even if they get married. Lots of people don’t buy a house because they can’t afford it or don’t want the maintenance.

notacooldad · 20/09/2025 16:33

Engaged means deciding to marry. You can't get married without actually being engaged first,
I know what engaged means but I don't know anyone since the early 80s that had an engagement party and made a song and dance about bring engaged.

FellowSuffereroftheAbsurd · 20/09/2025 16:34

Engaged at 18, Married at 18, Had my kids between 19 and 26, Bought first house at 35.

For me, no - not only was there no expectation, I was actively discouraged throughout my entire childhood against marriage or having children & got a lot of negativity for those choices. There was no real expectation towards homes or buying things for myself - my mother thought us kids should all financially support her, and we all disappointed her there and in many other ways quite merrily.

YerAWizardHarry · 20/09/2025 16:34

Had my only child at 19. Bought first house at 28 (still live here). Not engaged or ever married and I’m currently 32.

DysonLover1 · 20/09/2025 16:34

Retire 54

notacooldad · 20/09/2025 16:35

What do you mean people don’t get engaged? If they are planning a wedding, they are engaged. There doesn’t need to be a big proposal - DH and I just decided to get married, there wasn’t a proposal. But once we decided that, we were engaged. That’s the definition of engaged!
I meant all the big announcements about being engaged and getting engagement rings and all that nonsense.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/09/2025 16:35

I got engaged at 25, married at 26, had first DC at 27 and bought a flat at 28. Busy few years! I’m sure some people have expectations in regards to the timeline of all that sort of stuff but I don’t think other people’s opinions or expectations are at all relevant to the individual in question.

stayathomer · 20/09/2025 16:36

No expectations now op, love that my friend has declared she will rent for life because her and dd’s horse is the love of their life and they’d rather love life than be tied to a mortgage (and man😉)

edited to add, I got engaged at 25first home 26, married at 26first child 28, I have 4 kids but sadly now at 45 it doesn’t look like me and dh will make it

Violinist64 · 20/09/2025 16:36

I don’t know anyone who had an engagement party but all my friends my age (30) who have got engaged or married have got engagement rings and made an announcement about it (not in the newspaper or anything like that, but a post on social media or in the group chat and phoning parents/grandparents etc).

ginasevern · 20/09/2025 16:41

I didn't get engaged but I did get pregnant at 19 and had a very cheap registry office wedding at 20 just a month after my son was born. We lived with my IL's for a short while and then bought a tiny, inner city one bed house for £1,500. I think my DH earned around £60 a week at the time.

CherryBlossom321 · 20/09/2025 16:41

Engaged and bought flat age 18. Married and took next step on the property ladder age 22. Had babies age 24 then 28. 42 this year, several house moves and lots of peaks and troughs, kids now 13 and 17 and feel very happy and proud of what we have. Glad in particular I had my babies in my 20’s; I had no idea how my 40’s would hit physically and hormonally!

Bear2014 · 20/09/2025 16:41

Bought first property (flat) at 25 by myself
Met OH at 28
DD born when i was 33
Bought house with OH at 34

zipadeedodah · 20/09/2025 16:41

Engaged - 26
Married - 27
Have kids - 32 and 33
Buy House - 24

I do think there is an expectation that people will buy a house in their 20's and have children in their 30s but I don't think there is any expectation to get engaged or married.

stargirl1701 · 20/09/2025 16:42

notacooldad · 20/09/2025 16:45

It used to be a thing, well in my area anyway and I always thought it was ridiculous. 😆
Once we were living together there was no need to put a title on it and say ' we are engaged'
