Booneymil · 10/09/2025 23:20

The last thread was taken down because of personal insults towards the man.

We should be able to have a thread about this news topic.

Report any insulting posts. Mumsnet can you please just delete the offending posts, instead of deleting the whole thread?

Thank you.

Charlie Kirk has died today. He was shot at a public talk that he was giving.

I have only ever seen him talk about the trans debate, often at colleges like this one and to be honest I agreed with his points. He articulated himself well and often it was the people he was debating with that became rude and disrespectful.

In any case it doesn’t really matter what your views are, you can’t go around shooting someone who you don’t agree with. That’s not how the civilised world works. I feel very sad for his family and friends.

I haven't noticed much "far left" in the last 50 years. The far right is what has been regressive for the western world in that time frame.

Agreed, and the there has been manipulation on a macro scale via social media/other media by the right-wing to encourage fear and hatred of things that don’t exist in any influential way in the Western world - Marxism, Communism, and anything that might be described as ‘far-left’. The patterns are obvious once you notice them, as are the bots.

Underthinker · 11/09/2025 07:25

If a high profile left wing figure was killed. I expect you would want people to show respect and not immediately use a thread about their death to talk about the problems with their views.

However much I might want that the likelihood of it happening is zero.

This is a deeply unpleasant attempt at dehumanisation in order to justify the assignation of a man for having beliefs that are different to yours. Have a hard look at yourself.

Maybe question why? Any shooting is terrible, a pointless snufing out of that most sacred thing - life.

On top of that though, the assassination of Charlie Kirk is an attack of those other sacred things, the freedom of speech and therefore democracy itself. Both established enemies of the far Left. America currently has an assassin on the loose who thinks it’s perfectly ok to assassinate people for their beliefs in front of their two young children.

All those shooters probably had some twisted reason for being so. This shooting is no more important than any of those.

vegetarianlouise · 11/09/2025 07:28

Never heard of Charlie Kirk and I'm an American living in UK.

At no point have I ever stated the "assignation" was justified; that is your assumption.

My statements on Charlie Kirk are clear, verifiable fact. I can go much, much further in listing out his moral crimes but this thread isn't for that and, honestly, most grown ups are capable of doing the research for themselves.

Phatgurslyms · 11/09/2025 07:24

I don’t think it’s meant to be clever it is more that the irony is unavoidable.

Many of his supporters would consider the ‘price’ of ‘freedom’ which he apparently did himself. Including when it came to shooting of children in schools.
So yes, there is an irony in him being a victim of gun violence in a country where gun violence is rife and conservative politicians, like Charlie, refuse to do anything whatsoever to address that issue.

If there was one occupation where I would want merit to trump race its that of the person in charge of the lives of hundreds of people hundreds of feet up in the air.

I wish people would wake up.

So we agree then. DEI measures to recruit historically excluded talent are a good thing.

Where? On this thread?

I think this is a new thread after the deletion of others I assume for that reason - I mean what sort of evil monster responds as one person did )amongst many similar posts) “jolly good” when a young father is shit in front of his kids. Social media is full of laughing emojis and similar gloating responses by the #bekind brigade.

"America is really up there with the absolute worst countries in the world."

And nestled at the end of your comment is this line that really hits the nail on the head.

The US' global dominance is crumbling and their society is following suit. We are, in real-time, watching the what happens when a collapsing empire turns in on itself.

In Trumps first term I heard an expert on the decline of the Roman Empire who was drawing direct parallels between the Roman Empire in its death throes and the US now. Then we have China/Russia/India coming together so it all signifies a potentially very significant shift in world power. How it all plays out is rather anxiety making.

PersephoneParlormaid · 11/09/2025 07:30

No matter what he thought and said, the father of two small children has been killed, and that’s sad. Poor kids, it will affect them.

I don't support Trump but I know some really lovely people who do support Trump.

We should all have the freedom to choose

Are they really lovely because your white and straight ?

He was just a guy that went round college campuses.

Spreading the message that gun ownership was necessary, despite the cost to society and individuals.

And for that he deserved to die?

Would you say that about Hitler? I didnt think so, a dangerous man with dangerous views is gone.

I don’t know what has happened to peoples brains to say being ‘pro life is dangerous’

Read the actual words.

Saying you support life is dangerous?

You been politicised so much that you can’t be rational

VoulezVouz · 11/09/2025 07:31

hamstersarse · 11/09/2025 07:10

Post after post is ‘what did he expect given his ‘abhorrent’ views’?

There is just a hint of the evil beneath in those posts.

Hamster, that isn’t what the posts are saying at all. They are not suggesting he deserved it. It might go some way to explain it, though.

Far left extremism is the greatest evil we face today.

I’m looking at a left wing forum, you know what the most common reaction to Charlie’s tragic death is? The laughing emoji. That tells you everything you need to know.

Rest in peace, Charlie.

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. They use it all the time on Facebook to try and ridicule the comments of people they don’t agree with. I guess they don’t have anything more constructive to say.

Just because you don’t agree with someone, doesn’t mean you should kill someone/ revel at their death. So much for the tolerant left.

Trying to be inclusive is one thing, but the FAA demonstrably lowered standards so more black applicants could pass. Colorblind policies are the only fair way to be inclusive yet maintain standards

Some people think pro large scale immigration policies are dangerous. Would they be justified in being happy that a pro immigration commentator was murdered?

Two intelligent people can look at the same facts and come up with two different solutions to a problem. Democracy is voting for the idea we agree with and testing it to see if it works.

Be careful. You are close to being radicalised if you believe for one second that because you think he was dangerous, that his dehumanisation isn't that big of a deal. Openly debating an opinion you consider abhorrent is never dangerous, it is an opportunity for you to hone your own thoughts and gather facts to disprove him, it is the life blood of civilatiaon.

Absolutely. Britain went through the same macro-changes when it's empire collapsed and it ceased to be the most powerful nation on Earth.
Now it's America's turn. I neither trumpet nor mourn that; it's simply an inevitable fact.

The next empire? Look to the east, I'd say.

I never said I think it’s okay. I think it’s disgusting and a terrifying sign of American society falling to pieces. But that doesn’t mean I’ll suddenly pull some revisionist shit and think his beliefs were okay.

I never said I think i think his beliefs are ok either???
