Labour isn't working - Thread 6

TheNuthatch · 22/08/2025 15:23

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Can we really have a deputy pm who claims to have been hoodwinked by a tax accountant and never stopped to think, 'you know what, this seems a bit strange and not in the spirit of things, maybe I should get another opinion?'

Even if you use an accountant, HMRC is quite clear that you're personally responsible for your tax return being correct. I can't see why it would be any different with SDLT.

Plus I don't believe her (I think she now needs to find a new accountant after being ditched by the one she's just tried to lob under the bus though)!

MarstoMinerva · 03/09/2025 13:11

It would be amusing if, having chucked her accountant under the wheels, he bust out some paperwork demonstrating full well that Rayner knew what she was doing.

That really would be the cherry on the cake.

MarstoMinerva · 03/09/2025 13:07

A valid point - she’s a useful idiot.

Perhaps it would be better if she remains on the pitch. (Starmer loves a footie reference). Let’s hope she gets red-carded later.

Definitely got a yellow card I would imagine, it’s the last thing Starmer needs right now

I read on Guido Fawkes earlier this year that Labour ‘invested’ £43 million of tax payer cash into a company making paper bottles. That’s just one example of how they are dishing out tax payer money like no tomorrow. It’s no wonder the books don’t balance and now they’re having to go back on their promise re not increasing peoples taxes.

TheNuthatch · 03/09/2025 13:14

I don't believe her either Fluffy. You don't need a law degree to understand how much stamp duty should be paid. Dragging her son into it to garner sympathy is despicable.

Her full interview with Beth Rigby will be out this afternoon on the Lecky D pod.

Having said that, I hope she keeps her position as she is a walking reminder of who this government are.

Kemi Badenoch has let the side down in PMQs imo. She did not exploit this adequately.

I saw a tweet yesterday about how the US people should refer to what’s happening in America. Rather than say it’s Trump’s fault, rational minded people need to point the finger and say those that voted for Trump are the cause for the all the bad things he’s doing. They voted for him, they should take the responsibility. He’s never lied about who and what he is.

I hate people like that. I won't hold labour voters in contempt. Most people are good people, they think they are doing the right thing and half of the poor buggers deeply regret their vote. They heard smash the gangs, grown ups back in charge, have £300 off your energy bill, grow the economy and thought, yeah - sounds like a plan. No, I'll reserve my contempt for active supporters and the government, the ones who knew it was all bollocks at the outset.

MumOfManyAliases · 03/09/2025 13:15

EasternStandard · 03/09/2025 12:01

The usual Labour posters were adamant nothing was wrong there. How disappointing for the supporters.

Hope she goes.

They would be singing a different tune if it were a Reform or Conservative MP.

Agree, for the Tories, Badenoch is the wrong person, at the wrong time.

If people want to express an anti-Labour view, Reform is the only option.

Julen7 · 03/09/2025 13:21

Oh my goodness, the excuses being trotted out for Rayner…we all ought to feel sorry for her apparently, not her fault her affairs are so complex 🙄. Whether she resigns or not, she’s toast.

Yes, of course it would be entirely different. And it wouldn't just be accusations of financial incompetence, it would be insinuations that it spoke more widely of their disregard for the people of the country.

Yes, it's just three houses. She's supposed to be building 1.5million of the fuckers.

Nauseating.

Whether she stays or goes all credibility is lost. She’s another Labour liability so that’s good.

TwoTierBbq · 03/09/2025 13:39

As a top cabinet minister I would make sure everything I did was above scrutiny

Its no excuse to say should have would have could have.

Same old same old...everything is dandy until I get caught with my hand in the cookie jar !!!

Not good enough she's lost trust has to go

Indeed. They are complex because she chose to complicate them in the hope of avoiding taxes she expects the rest of us to pay.

Exactly a nice tax dodge if you can complicate things.

Apart from a few on mn as per she’ll be lambasted.

MarstoMinerva · 03/09/2025 13:56

MN’ers who have never held a serious role, never having had international exposure, never having left some provincial town. All of which is fine, of course - just don’t pretend differently.

Parochial to the nth degree.

Prescott also didn't make £48,500 from selling a council house, bought under right to own. Without paying CGT, despite living elsewhere.

Prescott was know as "two jags", for owning a jag as well as having the use of another for work - which seemed inappropriate to some, in a Labour MP. But I don't think there's been any suggestion that he paid less tax than might be expected on his cars.

Wonder whether Rayner will back-pay the council tax on her constituency house? Or pay 2nd home stamp duty on the Brighton flat? Or pay CGT on the profit she made from selling a council house?

Only kidding, I'm not wondering. We all know the answer.

Would you change your mind if AR does any of those things?

Tainiz · 03/09/2025 14:20

TheNuthatch · 03/09/2025 09:48

Yes. Arrested by armed officer for a tweet 🙄. Streeting this morning said he would rather see officers policing our streets, not tweets. Tell that to Lucy C.
They say one thing, do another.

He was arrested by armed officers because it took place at Heathrow airport.

Why so late? All these rumours and uncertainty surely isn’t healthy for an already ailing economy.

Osborne did a November budget and a December budget during his time.

Hunt also did a November budget.

Hunt clearly wasn't expecting to have to do a budget at all, that wasn't by design. Osborne didn't have doomy budget to deliver, he used it to scrap benefit cuts.

Apparently the 26th of November is the latest possible date to have what would be classed as an Autumn budget.
Perhaps they wanted to leave it as late as possible without the word winter being involved in the headlines.

There’s a pro Starmer / Labour one over that way

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 03/09/2025 14:43

I'm inclined to agree with Angela Rayner here...
