Labour isn't working - Thread 6

TheNuthatch · 22/08/2025 15:23

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It’s just the usual “nothing to see here” vibe Starmer likes to give out. Bet there’s some discontent behind closed doors.

Agreed.

And they are probably all privately saying to themselves ‘Shit, this being in government lark, is not as easy as I thought…’

I mean, one by one they are being found out.

twistyizzy · 02/09/2025 19:15

Even Grauniad is hinting at serious division.
The I has quotes from a senior Labour figure saying Starmer has 6 months

I think it’s what he’s wanted all along. A nice £115,000 per annum, security for ever, and all those financially lucrative talks and visits abroad he will endorse / key speaker. 🤢

Have you got links for these? Not casting doubt; I’d just like to see what Labour’s in-house journal has to say on the issue.

Will try and find it. Only noticed as I was scrolling news whilst in a very boring meeting 🤣

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said more than 650,000 people have signed up to his new party - which does not yet have an official name - following its launch in July.

The DfE plans to cut £74 million from its flagship teacher training programme and will also cut its recruitment target by 750.

I seem to remember we were told the education tax would drive up recruitment for 6500 extra teachers??

DfE cuts £74m from offer to bidders for Teach First contract

The DfE has also reduced the recruitment target for the Future High Potential Initial Teacher Training scheme by 750 trainees a year

It'll be interesting when it drops. Not very reassuring that it is taking this long though.

It was all bullshit wasn’t it?

All of it - the reasons they gave for imposing VAT on PS fees. Most of us called it at the time. Pure envy and spite.

The damage they have done already - with the economy, and with the ‘social contract’.

It’s immeasurable.

Yep 100%.

It was only ever an ideological tax. A spiteful, mean tax on the education of children.

I wasn’t a big participant in the VAT on education threads, largely because I have no skin in the game, but also because it seemed so obvious that the whole wretched fiasco was an act of spite and that no good would come of trying to persuade left-wing MNers of a different point of view. It was never a rational, considered argument for the imposition of VAT. It was an ideologically-based grudge.

Anyone who thought the money they might raise (but almost certainly wouldn’t raise) would reappear in the form of extra teachers and new classroom equipment was a fool or a knave. Personally, I think the majority of supporters were knavish rather than foolish.

Even so, I did enjoy pointing out that middle-class Labour parents help to crowd out the good comps. Some MNers, incredibly, deny this happens. They’re spiteful and dishonest, then.

Officials investigated in 2006, when former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott had a grace & favour flat in Admiralty House and, for nine years (from 1997-2006), he designated this as his secondary residence, while designating his Hull constituency home as his primary residence.

The investigation found that Admiralty House was in reality Prescott's main residence, as government ministers must live in London. Prescott apologised to MPs, paid 9 years arrears of council tax on Admiralty House and paid council tax henceforward.

Prescott also stated that, from 1997-2006, he had paid 10% extra income tax (£10,000 pa) to HMRC in respect of the benefit in kind of Admiralty House.

Rayner is in the same position as Prescott, she should pay her dues accordingly.

Prescott also didn't make £48,500 from selling a council house, bought under right to own. Without paying CGT, despite living elsewhere.

Prescott was know as "two jags", for owning a jag as well as having the use of another for work - which seemed inappropriate to some, in a Labour MP. But I don't think there's been any suggestion that he paid less tax than might be expected on his cars.

Wonder whether Rayner will back-pay the council tax on her constituency house? Or pay 2nd home stamp duty on the Brighton flat? Or pay CGT on the profit she made from selling a council house?

Only kidding, I'm not wondering. We all know the answer.

She’s not in the same league as Prescott. DEI hire, that’s all. And I’m a former defender of her. 🤢

Like a cut price labour version anyway, Elton is cool. She looked like she thinks it’s all a game.

That awful photo is across the front pages this morning, including the Guardian. She looks hideous for a deputy pm, and her smirk speaks volumes. She clearly doesn't even respect the office she holds.
