How many hrs have you been without food when you eat breakfast?

I was listening to a podcast and heard that you should have gone 12 hrs at least ideally between eating the evening before and breakfast.
I know lots of people do intermittent fasting as well, so they might be going for longer.
I wanted breakfast this morning and realised I’d only gone 8 hrs (summer holiday mode)
Just nosey and interested in what others do.

12 or 13. 7pm to 8am.

LadyDanburysHat · 22/08/2025 09:07

I will usually be at least 12, more like 14. I don't snack in the evening any more as I get reflux.

fruitandvegoverload · 22/08/2025 09:08

I eat my evening meal by 7pm and I try not to eat anything the next day until at least 11am, usually later. I find it easy nowadays because of the kind of foods I eat. When I used to eat lots of carbs and processed food I would be starving as soon as I woke up!

I’m the same - 16 hrs between 7pm and 11am

BunnyRuddington · 22/08/2025 09:09

At least 12 usually.

alittlequinnie · 22/08/2025 09:10

I have my evening meal at 7.30 and then eat breakfast at 10.30 am - except at the weekends when I can't wait that long!

GOODCAT · 22/08/2025 09:11

Eat between 8.30pm and 9pm and breakfast between 5am and 5.30am so 9 hours

That’s interesting. I’ve gone a bit overboard on the bread recently and do feel hungrier a lot more.

I tend to eat 6-7pm and breakfast at 8.30, so anywhere between 12-14 hrs. I don't buy or eat evening snacks anymore as eating later gives me heartburn at night.

Cinaferna · 22/08/2025 09:12

Between 12 and 16 usually. We usually finish dinner at around 7.15pm and I don't normally eat after dinner. Then breakfast is either at around 8.15 if I'm hungry or 11 am if I'm not.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 22/08/2025 09:13

17 hrs usually. I generally don’t eat between my dinner and lunch the next day. I’ll have black coffee and an effervescent vitamin when I get up. Unfortunately I’m fat and gaining weight every week. But it suits me to eat like this and it’s no effort so I continue. I’ve always hated eating in the morning since I was a child. I sort of think I’d be much fatter if I wasn’t doing it. Maybe I’m wrong.

Dabberlocks · 22/08/2025 09:13

We had our dinner around 7pm last night, and I just ate a bacon sandwich, so 14 hours. If I'd been at work, I wouldn't have eaten at all yet, I'd probably go until around 11am so that would be 16 hours. I'm not normally one for breakfast.

fthisfthatfeverything · 22/08/2025 09:13

14-17

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 22/08/2025 09:13

I don't eat breakfast.

But I have dinner at 6pm and then lunch at 12 the next day, so that's 18 hours.

It's not something I do on purpose, I've eaten like that for 30+ years because that's just how my appetite works.

Westfacing · 22/08/2025 09:14

Usually 12/13 hours - tend not to eat after 19.00

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2025 09:14

Minimum 13 max 17

FinallyMovingHouse · 22/08/2025 09:16

If I want my guts to vaguely behave themselves (I have IBS) at least 13 hours, but 15 is better. If I'm ignoring guts, about 10 hours is normal.
I keep reading that the fasting means your guts are able to benefit from anti inflammatory chemicals that are produced when it's resting. I definitely feel the difference pretty markedly when I fast.

Chemenger · 22/08/2025 09:16

Usually around 15; 7pm to 10am. I do have a coffee much earlier though, I’m not sure if that counts. I didn’t eat breakfast at all when I was working because I had to be out of the house too early to face food.

Fractiontoomuchfennel · 22/08/2025 09:17

@AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone

do you mind me asking, are you overweight?

ShesTheAlbatross · 22/08/2025 09:17

Depends on whether I’m going in to the office or not.

If I am, I have breakfast at about 6:30, so it’s ~11.5 hrs since I last ate.
If I’m not, it’s probably more like 13 or 14.

Thissickbeat · 22/08/2025 09:18

About 12. Tea at 6:30ish and breakfast around 7am.

gingercat02 · 22/08/2025 09:21

Pretty much 12-13 on weekdays. We eat at 7pm and I have breakfast at 8am or just before.
Never eat after our evening meal, not for any dietary reasons, because we eat quite late and go to bed about 10:30-11pm I'm not hungry.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 22/08/2025 09:23

Usually around the 14 mark

BobButtonsismycat · 22/08/2025 09:23

Around 14 hours, often much longer.

I have IBS though and it flares up every morning so I never feel like breakfast. I also stop eating around 7pm or I'll end up with gurgling guts throughout the night.

One benefit is I'm slim as a result of naturally fasting for years.

No, I'm in my mid fifties and despite perimenopause and an underactive thyroid, I've never been overweight.
