How many hrs have you been without food when you eat breakfast?

IDreamOfElectricSheep · 22/08/2025 09:05

I was listening to a podcast and heard that you should have gone 12 hrs at least ideally between eating the evening before and breakfast.
I know lots of people do intermittent fasting as well, so they might be going for longer.
I wanted breakfast this morning and realised I’d only gone 8 hrs (summer holiday mode)
Just nosey and interested in what others do.

Normally about 12. We have usually finished dinner by 7/7:30 and then have breakfast about 12 hours later.

LegoTherapy · 22/08/2025 18:50

13.5 in the week and between 16 and 17 at the weekend.

EmpressaurusKitty · 22/08/2025 18:54

I seem to be the other way round from most people, I wake up hungry, have breakfast around 6, main meal around 11.30 & then probably ryvita or a roll around 3, & snack on dried fruit but usually nothing after 5. So probably 13-14 hours.

I WFH in a fairly flexible job & don’t have to match anyone’s else’s schedule though, which helps.

Recently I’ve started trying to fast from around 7pm to at least 10am, doesn’t work some days but generally feel better for it and I definitely end up eating less overall.

GarlicLitre · 22/08/2025 19:02

You all go to bed hungry? Doesn't it wake you up?

Not sure about anybody else, but I'm not hungry and I'm more likely to be unable to sleep/wake up feeling sick/indigestion if I've eaten later than 7.30pm.

stargazer02 · 22/08/2025 19:11

For years I couldn't stomach breakfast. Would have just had lunch around 12-2 and dinner 6-7pm. However we were constantly being told how breakfast is so important so I started eating earlier and got used to having breakfast about 8am but it was difficult for first few months. I still had same lunch and dinner. In fact I felt hungrier.
Then it switched to "fasting longer is better" FFS!
I do have a milky coffee when I wake up so it's not actually fasting past 6.30am (so still 12ish hours) but I only really feel hungry about 10.30 and can't wait longer without discomfort.

springissprung2025 · 22/08/2025 19:16

I have my breakfast around 8am then eat another meal at around 3-4 pm. Its the equivalent of dinner rather than lunch so salmon, chicken, pasta, curry, vegetables etc. I don't want or need to eat three times a day but couldn't wait until an normal adult evening meal time

BehindTheLens · 22/08/2025 20:04

It depends on the day and what I’m doing. On the days I go for an early run, I eat breakfast earlier, so it’s about 12 hours. Other days, probably 14 hours.

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/08/2025 06:48

I think the less you eat the less you want to eat. Your stomach shrinks and it becomes normal for you. This isn't "advice" as such. I've always had food issues. I was very stressed last year as had an upcoming appointment/ meeting and didn't eat for 3 days prior - not a boast - when I get shaky and feel faint I know I HAVE to eat.
I now wish for the days I documented calories etc as I genuinely have no appetite. People complement me on my "weight loss" but they haven't a clue.

EmpressaurusKitty · 24/08/2025 07:33

It’s about what as much as how much & when though. I wouldn’t dream of starving myself, because I’m focused on staying strong & building muscle as much as I am on not building up fat. So lots of protein & fibre & different coloured veg.

12 or 13. 7pm to 8am.

14 hours on average.

swapsicles · 24/08/2025 07:51

Oh the joys of being able to decide what time to have breakfast/lunch!
For so many years it was dictated by what time I started/finished work and what time my break was.
Making sure I had breakfast at 6am because I wouldn't be able to eat until 12 or a shift starting at 12 meant I'd had to have breakfast at 11 because I wouldn't be able to eat until around 5pm.
Thankfully now I work the same hours each day so breakfast at 7, lunch at 1pm and dinner 7pm. Days off can be a different depending on what I'm up to.

Fizbosshoes · 24/08/2025 08:00

Usually probably only 11 hours😬
On holiday probably 13

I seem to eat way more than the average person on MN though.

Cismyfatarse · 24/08/2025 08:02

18 hours. We have always eaten by 7pm and I don’t eat until 1pm. At the weekends I have late breakfast and during the week I just have lunch. I have been intermittent fasting. Seems to work for me.

Magicmushroomsauce · 24/08/2025 08:10

18 hours, we eat dinner around 5.30/6 with the kids then I don’t eat until 12 the next day. I do have a couple of milky teas in the morning and one of those is with collagen so that helps keep me going.

AxolotlEars · 24/08/2025 08:11

17 hours...ish

Girlintheframe · 24/08/2025 08:20

12-13 hours. It’s not intentional just lifestyle.

DustyMaiden · 24/08/2025 10:10

Mere1 · 24/08/2025 07:39

14 hours on average.

7 to 9 is 14hrs

bumblebramble · 24/08/2025 10:25

12-14 hours most days. I’m not a breakfast fan and would usually eat an early lunch around 11 if that’s allowed. I find it hilarious after years of “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” to find out that my natural hunger pattern now comes with a stamp of approval.

However on the couple of days before my period, I eat every couple of hours. Not deliberately - it’s just one of the signs that I know I’m due soon. I don’t think I could fast through that, even if I wanted to try. I’m inclined to think my body probably knows what it needs.

LoudlyProudlyHorrid · 24/08/2025 10:33

I try not to eat later than 7 and I eat once I'm hungry, usually any time between 11am and 2pm.

It's very flexible intermittent fasting. I just go with how I feel.

OhNoNotSusan · 24/08/2025 10:37

about 11 today
never 12,

Crunchymum · 24/08/2025 10:39

Dinner about 7.30pm and breakfast 11.30am. I'm not doing I.F. I just don't feel hungry any earlier.

I do have 2 cups of tea in the morning though.

I eat breakfast about 11.30am, lunch about 3pm and dinner at 7.30pm.

Always sit down and have a cuppa with the kids when they have dinner I just can't eat at the times they do (they eat at 7am, 12.30pm and 5.30pm - a little later weekends and school holidays) otherwise I'd need another meal 😮

We obviously all eat together when out for dinner / away etc.

Chickoletta · 24/08/2025 10:43

Between 14 and 16 depending on what time we finish dinner.
I’ve never been a breakfast person, so intermittent fasting suits me. I’ll have a drink when I wake up but usually don’t eat until 10.30/11.00.

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 24/08/2025 10:49

Depends on my shifts. Sometimes Breakfast has to be 5am, and dinner is six pm, so 11 hours. Sometimes I eat on the night shift!
