How many hrs have you been without food when you eat breakfast?

I was listening to a podcast and heard that you should have gone 12 hrs at least ideally between eating the evening before and breakfast.
I know lots of people do intermittent fasting as well, so they might be going for longer.
I wanted breakfast this morning and realised I’d only gone 8 hrs (summer holiday mode)
Just nosey and interested in what others do.

I don’t usually eat breakfast so will go over 12 hours, probably between 14-16 as I do often snack in the evenings. That said, there are days I will wake up hungry and want breakfast or where I’ve got something nice in for the morning and will eat and in that case probably don’t always go a full 12 hours.

Zippedydodah · 22/08/2025 09:54

Minimum of 12 hours, often 18 or 19 hours.

Parky04 · 22/08/2025 09:54

16 hours. Last meal is at 16:00 and breakfast is at 08:00.

DancingLions · 22/08/2025 09:54

I've usually finished dinner by 7 and rarely eat anything after. Then breakfast around 10 (can't eat first thing). So usually about 15 hours.

I don't think it's that hard to go 12 hours overnight without eating.

ForHazelHelper · 22/08/2025 09:57

This always confuses me because I often can’t stomach eating till at least 9 or 10am so it’ll be about 14 or -5 hours for me, but I’ve heard loads that women should t do this and that you’re best to have some protein first thing in the morning. So I really don’t know what is best for us ladies as apparently a lot of studies have, typically, been on men and not on women.

boathouserocks · 22/08/2025 09:58

Last meal of the day: 6:00 p.m.
Cup of tea, one slice of toast 6:00 a.m., everyday.

Sometimes an egg, toast, coffee, mid morning.
Then nothing until the evening meal at 6:00 p.m..

BauhausOfEliott · 22/08/2025 09:59

There’s no evidence that waiting specific amounts of time between meals has any health benefits. It’s the amount of calories consume that makes a difference. It doesn’t matter when you consume them.

I don’t eat breakfast most days. I generally eat in the evening roughly around 8ish and then drink tea in the mornings and get some lunch some time between 12 and 2 depending on my work calendar looks like.

WifeOfAGemini · 22/08/2025 09:59

12-14 usually

Terracottafarmers · 22/08/2025 10:00

i don't eat breakfast and never really have. I only really eat a small snack at lunch 1 then dinner at 7 as I'm trying to keep my weight steady

Ihateboris · 22/08/2025 10:01

I eat my evening meal at about 6pm, and then don't usually eat until the following lunchtime (approx 1pm), so about 20 hours . Not hungry until then, although I do drink coffee in between.

Bruisername · 22/08/2025 10:04

Last year I was trying IF so finished dinner by 8pm and then nothing until lunch at 12/1 so 16/17 hrs

i have never been a breakfast person so it was no hardship but I didn’t feel good tbh

now I have started having a healthy breakfast around 8 and I feel so much better. It’s the only thing I changed

Why would you force yourself to eat if your body is telling you it's not hungry?

I eat my evening meal by 7pm and I try not to eat anything the next day until at least 11am, usually later. I find it easy nowadays because of the kind of foods I eat. When I used to eat lots of carbs and processed food I would be starving as soon as I woke up!

Same here. And lost 4 stone in 7 years.

Catpiece · 22/08/2025 10:12

15 hours

FatherFrosty · 22/08/2025 10:12

I try to leave it as long as possible. It seems to wake my tummy up to just being hungry all the time.
now I’m in Peri I’ve noticed a definite shift with eating. I want to eat three meals between 11-4. But that’s not exactly conducive to family life!

LillyPJ · 22/08/2025 10:13

Usually 12 or 13. Dinner 7.30pm, breakfast 8.30am or thereabouts.

LadyDanburysHat · 22/08/2025 09:07

I will usually be at least 12, more like 14. I don't snack in the evening any more as I get reflux.

Me too so eat at 7pm. Breakfast around 9-10 am

wominzy · 22/08/2025 10:16

Same as many others, 16 hours. Stop eating at 7pm and have breakfast around 11am. I do have coffee with a splash of milk in the mornings though, but no grub!

It's just a habit I'm in now and I feel so much better not having food sitting in my stomach late at night. the 16/8 trained me not to snack in the evenings too, which is the best thing ever for me. Never think of it now.

I find when I go away on hols, eating later makes me a bit tired and grumpy next day, although I love it just the same!

meisafairy · 22/08/2025 10:23

I only eat between 1pm and 7pm, light lunch and a normal evening meal, I started this 2 years ago and have lost 2st and kept it off, I’m used to it now so don’t crave.
I only drink coffee and water in the morning

Phobiaphobic · 22/08/2025 10:24

14-15 hours. I often eat breakfast late.

MsGoodenough · 22/08/2025 10:26

I manage max 8 hours! If I don't eat supper I'm too hungry to sleep. So often supper at 10.30 then I'm up at 6 for work and again too hungry to do anything before eating.

Yerroblemom1923 · 22/08/2025 10:27

I only eat once a day around 3pm so probably 24 hours (this isn't breakfast as such but more a main meal or whatever I can stomach,). Not ideal but since hitting the old peri-meno I have no appetite and can't eat big portions. It's embarrassing as it's supposed to be the opposite, I know....

Catsandcannedbeans · 22/08/2025 10:27

Ooft no way. We normally have a tasty snack once the kids are in bed (normally something greasy and cheesy), so from then till breakfast is probably like 7-8 hours. Maybe it will shave a few years off my life but oh well.

Mikart · 22/08/2025 10:28

I can do 17..6 pm till 11am

Bjorkdidit · 22/08/2025 10:28

For me it's very variable because I work hybrid and also travel for work so when I can eat doesn't always match up with when I want to eat, also sometimes have to eat what is provided which is rarely my choice of food.

Left to my own devices I'll eat mid morning, early afternoon and early evening with the bulk of my meals/calories in the first two meals.

However, what food I want and when in the evening seems unpredictable. Sometimes I want hardly anything, which is difficult if I'm eating out, others I'm so hungry by 4/5 pm that I feel ill.

So, out of all the intermittent fasting type ways of eating, 16:8 is the one I'd most easily get on with, apart from it doesn't fit in well with what seems like the majority of people who are happy to eat little or nothing all day in anticipation of a large meal at about 7/8 pm.
