How many hrs have you been without food when you eat breakfast?

I was listening to a podcast and heard that you should have gone 12 hrs at least ideally between eating the evening before and breakfast.
I know lots of people do intermittent fasting as well, so they might be going for longer.
I wanted breakfast this morning and realised I’d only gone 8 hrs (summer holiday mode)
Just nosey and interested in what others do.

Everyone is different.

I have dinner around 8 and eat around 7.30 in the morning. I don't snack in the evenings after dinner ever.

Same.

AgentPidge · 22/08/2025 10:34

About 13

Elbowpatch · 22/08/2025 10:36

Generally, around 15.

irregularegular · 22/08/2025 10:38

Probably more like 11 hours generally. We usually eat our evening meal at 8pm and have breakfast at 7 - 7.30 depending on the plans for the day. Sometimes a bit later at the weekend.

Can't imagine it is a major problem!

I think we eat quite late in the evening and quite early in the morning, so I imagine most people would have a gap of at least as long.

RaininSummer · 22/08/2025 10:38

About 15 sometimes as much as16 if dinner is ready at six. Am just eatingy brekky banana now at work and dinner was around 6 30 last night.

LemondrizzleShark · 22/08/2025 10:38

About 14 usually.

If it was only 8 hours for you OP, did you eat dinner at midnight or eat breakfast at 5am?

opencecilgee · 22/08/2025 10:39

17-18 hours

There’s no evidence that waiting specific amounts of time between meals has any health benefits. It’s the amount of calories consume that makes a difference. It doesn’t matter when you consume them.

I don’t eat breakfast most days. I generally eat in the evening roughly around 8ish and then drink tea in the mornings and get some lunch some time between 12 and 2 depending on my work calendar looks like.

There are plenty of studies that link fasting with better health, quite apart from weight loss. It allows the body to get rid of old materials (autophagy), is linked to lowering inflammation, blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and regulates hormones like leptin. We have not evolved by eating continuously or even regularly for thousands of years so it makes sense that our bodies would benefit from prolonged periods without food.

Incidentally, even milk in coffee breaks a fast. I stick to water, black coffee and herbal tea until I decide to eat my first meal.

irregularegular · 22/08/2025 10:42

Though if a glass of wine counts as eating then it would be less sometimes. We almost never have anything to eat in the evening, but we do have either a herbal tea or a glass of wine depending on the mood.

I’m up at 5 or 6am on work days so have breakfast 5:30/6:30 ish. There are days I have my main meal by 4pm, other days 6:30pm so it varies, but max 14 hours, minimum 12 hours.

Why would you force yourself to eat if your body is telling you it's not hungry?

I have no idea, I have just heard it loads.

Whatwouldyoudoif · 22/08/2025 10:53

Usually about 18-20hrs, dinner at 8pm and i frequently wont eat until sometimes 2pm,3pm the next day though sometimes not until 6pm so can do 22hrs. Im never hungry for breakfast and find intermittent fasting helps control my hunger and weight

hmmnotreallysure · 22/08/2025 10:54

I've just started intermittent fasting and don't eat after 6.30pm or before 10.30am. I sleep much better for not snacking at night but am definitely ready to have breakfast at 10.30!!

This always confuses me because I often can’t stomach eating till at least 9 or 10am so it’ll be about 14 or -5 hours for me, but I’ve heard loads that women should t do this and that you’re best to have some protein first thing in the morning. So I really don’t know what is best for us ladies as apparently a lot of studies have, typically, been on men and not on women.

I ignore the protein first thing idea that Stacey Sims suggested. It made me want to be sick when I exercised. And once I start eating I can't stop.

I am usually 12-14 hrs. But obvs on holiday this doesn't apply as DH likes eating late and I love breakfast as soon as I've exercised.

Horseytwinkletoes321 · 22/08/2025 11:03

I eat my evening meal from 7.30pm-8.30pm depending on the day of the week and I usually have something to eat 10.30-11am next day. I'm up very early but our mornings are hectic, I don't feel hungry first thing, it isn't a conscious thing.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/08/2025 11:11

Today? 15 hours. When I'm working, it's about 13. It's also my lunch, so I'll eat again about 9-11 hours later. At the weekends, it's often more like 18-20 hours.

I'm not a breakfast/3 meals a day person and my ideal would be up at 5, food around 9.30am (lots of coffee both before and after that point) and then another meal around 5pm - with Sunday lunch around 2pm - but that doesn't match DP's timetable and whilst I found it hard to adapt to eating later, we do like eating together so I changed to eat a couple of hours later and he changed to eating a couple of hours earlier.

I drew the line at not eating until 10.30pm. He may have been able to go to bed and sleep, but I couldn't.

I don't think that being told what you 'should' do is as valuable as working with your natural preferences, which goes for what you eat as well as when,

  1. An early supper suits me better than a late breakfast.
UnTrucDOeuf · 22/08/2025 11:27

13/14h occasionally 18h if miss breakfast.
im trying to get my blood sugar stable by following the Glucose Goddess hacks

YesTHATMum · 22/08/2025 11:28

We aim to eat 6-7 in the evening and if I'm home I'll have breakfast around 630am or in the office at 8am. I snack much less in the office so I should probably try to eat later at home too!

user1476613140 · 22/08/2025 11:30

Around 9 or 10 hours. Asleep around 10pm. Up 6, but don't eat til 7am.

Electrotrinco · 22/08/2025 11:31

Does having milk in coffee count?

MargoLivebetter · 22/08/2025 11:34

14 hours. I don't usually eat after 8pm and don't have breakfast until 10am. I tried to do 16:8 but I couldn't go that long. I felt dizzy and too lacking in energy. 14 hours works well for me and gives my body a good long break without eating. It isn't rigid though, it is just what I usually do. If I'm really hungry earlier in the morning then I will eat earlier.

zaazaazoom · 22/08/2025 11:34

Weekdays stop eating at 6pm eat at 10am (16 hours)
Weekend tend to go out eating and drinking so stop at midnight and eat at 8am unless do park run when it's 10am.
