Sydney Sweeney

I keep seeing posts on my SM about Sydney and the controversy behind her advertisement for some jeans. I’ve seen multiple posts about it being controversial but I can’t understand why, she’s got a low cut top on but I wouldn’t consider it low enough to cause the attention it’s getting. Please can someone tell me what I have missed?

If it is something really obvious and I’m being an idiot I promise I’m not being goady, I genuinely can’t figure it out.

I think it's controversial because it's saying her genes are what make her beautiful?..

popcornpower2025 · 31/07/2025 21:15

It's to do with what she says, something about having good genes

Teenytwo · 31/07/2025 21:17

I think I might have to blame baby brain because even with the explanations I don’t feel any wiser about it. She is beautiful, why is that controversial?

As I understand it people think the dialogue is supportive of eugenics. It probably doesn’t help she’s from a Republican city and it has appeared in the past her and her family are MAGA supporters.

CaptainFuture · 31/07/2025 21:18

Googled, and it's being seen as wrong because it's subversively saying she is pretty because she is blonde and blue eyed? I think??

Teenytwo · 31/07/2025 21:19

I don’t actually know anything about her, I don’t think ive seen her in anything so that’s probably part of it too. I don’t think I had heard of her a week ago.

OP posts:
shakethatshimmy · 31/07/2025 21:19

I think it’s her drawling speech based on what I’ve seen on TikTok. I didn’t think it was that bad tbh and wouldn’t have noticed had people not been parodying it 🤷‍♀️

MrsMitford3 · 31/07/2025 21:19

It is a sort of re-make of a very famous ad Brooke Shields did for Calvin klein in
the 80's.

Brooke jokes about genetics/jeans etc whilst getting dressed in the jeans.

Genes/jeans

Literal Nazis

user593 · 31/07/2025 21:19

What she says is:

Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.

beelegal · 31/07/2025 21:20

She hasn’t got pink or blue hair and she is not trans and she is not obese. That’s why she is controversial.

Mewling · 31/07/2025 21:21

It’s a dog whistle to racists who think good jeans/genes constitutes being blonde haired and blue eyed. This line of thought rather famously didn’t go well during the 1930s/1940s and let’s face it, Germany learned their eugenics from America.

35965a · 31/07/2025 21:21

It’s the whole eugenics angle

She is. It doesn’t mean that women with dark hair and brown eyes aren’t. It’s just that’s she’s the beautful model they chose

Exactly. She is literally genociding non-blue eyed non-blondes.

Although she isn't actually blonde, so I'm not sure where they're going with that. Something something Goebbels.

MummaMummaJumma · 31/07/2025 21:23

Hi OP,

The advert says something like “Sydney has good jeans” 👖

The speculation is, is there an underlying message about her having good “genes”. Is she the blueprint (blonde hair, blue eyes, slim) for what is considered beautiful.

I don’t know too much about it. I caught a brief bit on Piers Morgans debate today.

Teenytwo · 31/07/2025 21:23

Just googled eugenics, not something I had heard of or was aware of before. I’m surprised a company would purposely do something so questionable when trying to advertise.

Charabanc · 31/07/2025 21:25

The blue hairs in the US can't stand Sydney because they fancy her because she refuses to kowtow to the "be kind and be a liberal and state your pronouns and support Kamala" doctrine. She just does her thing, and they hate it.

Oasisagiger · 31/07/2025 21:27

Some people are making mountains out of molehills. Purposely forgetting that jeans and genes are the same words but have significantly different meanings. Utterly bonkers!

She was chosen for the advert because she’s pretty, young and ‘on-trend’. Some people get offended and read everything in to anything!

Would this have been an ‘issue’ had it been one of the Kardashian’s in the advert who have brown hair (naturally) and dark eyes? Or that Zendaya? Who was/is another trendy celeb. Of course not! Utter madness!

BruisedNeckMeat · 31/07/2025 21:29

It’s certainly getting a lot of attention which I assume was the plan.

Its just a 180 on the usual adverts which seem to have to feature a trans person or an obese person or at the very least a mixed race couple.

American Eagle have committed the politically incorrect crime of just taking a beautiful, blonde, blue eyed woman and sticking their product on her.

Absolutely agree...so we're not meant to acknowledge she's pretty because she's blonde and blue eyed?

She's not even blonde! She's got naturally brown hair.

Perzival · 31/07/2025 21:43

AE have sold out in many stores in the US.

The truth is blonde haired, blue eyed, think, big boobed with symmetrical features is attractive and will sell products.

I'm a larger middle aged woman with greying hair - I'd rather see adverts with proper models than the average person on the street. Sex sells. Blondes need representation too! 😝

To be fair, that will be part of their marketing campaign.

OverlyFragrant · 31/07/2025 21:46

They're butt hurt that a conventionally attractive young white woman is in an advert.
