A genuine miracle has happened

It’s 7.15pm. Both kids are in their own beds quietly. 4yo reading to her teddies, 5mo asleep in his crib. DP is making crumble from the blackberries and apples in our garden. The house is reasonably tidy. No one is asking anything of me.

How long will it last?! How should I enjoy my freedom? What miracles have happened in your house today?

Just as I was about to win a family board game which would have definitely sent my 8-going-on-16 son who was already on the edge into a screaming “it’s not fair” tantrum, DH found a card which meant I skipped a turn and DS won instead. Cue delighted shrieks of “he is the smartest”. DD6-going-on-16 just watched this in peace without herself descending into an “omg not fair” screams. No one flipped the board.

This happens roughly once every 4 years.

I once got my newborn, 2 year old, 3 year old, DH, MIL and FIL all napping at the same time. Most peaceful hour of my life.

After reading this thread, I am now looking forward to seeing what miracles might transpire today - for me and for everyone else. It's lovely to focus on the nice things that happen as we often don't notice them.

Blackberries have started to go ripe near us for the last 2-3 weeks in the north of England. Could it be due to the hot weather?

Same here, West of England

Cloverforever · 25/07/2025 07:45

I received a lovely bunch of flowers and champagne from my bosses today as I've been there for 10 years. The note that went with it was very touching as it really made me feel appreciated.

Life can be tough, so you have to take a moment to appreciate the small wins.

I love this thread so it's a little miracle all by itself! I've remembered something else wonderful that happened today. There's a huge and beautiful tree opposite my house and I look at it every time I do the washing up. This morning a big lorry pulled up and two men with high-vis gear, ladders, ropes and chain saws appeared. One of them started climbing the tree and I feared they were going to cut it down. I decided I'd have to move house if they did! Luckily, they just removed a couple of large dead branches and within an hour, they'd chipped all the debris, swept up and disappeared. The tree still looks beautiful.

Best short story/thriller! I was holding my breath for fearing you'd got wrong end of the stick for all of several seconds.

Your blackberries are very early or are they last year's crop from the freezer? I have some which are years old!

Very early! There’s loads round us.

Genuine question, how did you go from full contact to being able to put down (I ask as I lie beside 6 month old so that she doesn't wake up)?

Skipped out the trying to put him down once as stage. Didn’t ever work. So went straight for putting down in the cot when tired but awake (got into a nap schedule last week so easier to predict) then singing and patting to sleep. Made sure we had a song already associated with sleep (it start singing it as they fall asleep in your arms now to build the association). Same deal for naps and night wake ups (except when needing milk). If he got too upset I’d pick up, have a cuddle, calm him down, then repeat.

Not perfect but working so far…

I heard some kids outside earlier talking about our guinea pig garden ornament. As it was still light and I had a real one on my lap at the time I opened the front door to say hi and so they could give it a pet if they wanted to.

It turned out I'd misteken the sound and it was actually a 69 year old man with learning difficulties and his wife. They were utterly thrilled and enjoyed a chat and little furry cuddle!

Felt like I'd brightened someone's day with such a small effort

I think this one is my favourite ❤️

Yes - I've just picked 2 and a half pounds of them in less than half an hour. Fabulous!

It's not raining in Ireland. I got some of the lawn cut and a DC is outside mowing now. 2 loads of washing got line dried.

It's raining in Ireland again.

How wonderfully perfect. Ironically, your post has made me feel blissfully inadequate and shit

DS 13 is packed for the Scout Jamboree on Saturday. Many thanks to elder son's girlfriend, who motivated him and helped him. He does what she tells him to do. 🤣

Oh, excellent!

MIL has called DH to help move a cement bath into their new house so he is getting us a takeaway on the way home ☺️☺️☺️

I was a cruel mother. Once they graduated to the cot, once in it I didn’t pick them up un less there was a VERY good reason. I sang, talked, stroked, held hands and stayed until they drifted off or were clearly about to. After about a week they settled very quickly. Worth the few days of sitting there for what seemed like hours !!

Our blackberries (in a tub in the garden) are almost finished (have picked 1kg) and the wild ones are ripe too (down South as far as you can go)

orthodonticx · 25/07/2025 18:20

We have made a blackberry and apple pie too! From blackberries picked from hedgerows. It is in the oven at the moment. I am not hugely confident ours will turn out well though, it might be up there with the Easter catastrophic cupcake situation. I remember the words "let's just wing it and put lots of sugar in" being used tonight when someone asked about the recipe being followed. The raw pastry tasted nice, so that is something.

Reading to teddies sounds very sweet!

Soonenough · 25/07/2025 18:24

I have the house to myself . It is clean and tidy . I am making something to eat that only I like but nobody is asking for a taste . I managed to walk the dog without him pulling me so she is lying contentedly now . Got a bedding wash done , hung out and put away . Patio door open still bright and grass cut .

I remember the days of both kids being put to bed by 7:30 , 8pm and then having the whole evening left to maybe watch TV or get sorted for next day in peace . Hardest time is when they are up in the night or you are staying up for a midnight feed.

Sprogonthetyne · 25/07/2025 18:27

No chance, you clearly just fell asleep from exhaustion and are mumsneting from inside a fever dream. In 5 minutes the 4yo will wake you up to tell you they pooped their pants, weren't sure what to do, so fed it the the baby.

My husband took the day off work and took our little ones to the beach with his parents and it has been peaceful all day. I wasn’t well enough to go but have enjoyed a long bath in complete silence and read my book on the hammock for a bit. I also made a crumble with fruit from the garden (apple and rhubarb)
