Why is everyone so angry at Labour?

From what I understand they tried to cut (essential) benefits and put the money somewhere else. And what happened was labour MPs got angry, threat of resulting poverty in the population etc. So labour backtracked.

My questions are

  1. they backtracked so doesnt that mean they get it?

B) weren't they trying to find money to fill a hole that must be filled?

C) How else could have they raised the money? High taxed- bad people get very annoyed NHS cant handle more cuts.

I'm guessing they thought that forcing people off benefits would stimulate the economy by forcing people 'back into work'.

I think people expect Labour to care about the disabled and vulnerable so it was a big shock that these were the groups targeted.
You expect it from the tories, but not from labour.

This.

But there is no money right? How will they fix what they need to fix if they dont cut back on something. Whatever they cut back on will piss everyone off.

Do you think they thought cutting benefits might be a good thing (economic growth in workforce etc)?

Because they are trashing the economy and people are losing their jobs? The hospitality industry is on its knees? Their main ‘successes’ have been introducing legislation legalising killing terminally ill people and unwanted very nearly full term healthy babies. And making old people cold till they were forced to change. Failing to tackle immigration while making comments worryingly close to Enoch powell’s ‘rivers of blood’. The bond market is looking shaky. They’ve failed to tackle the vast amount of people on benefits / threatened to take benefits depending on your view point.

Sandysandyfeet · 02/07/2025 19:40

They’ve managed to fail their own supporters while exceeding the worst fears of people who didn’t support them. They are going to let The reform in.

NotDavidTennant · 02/07/2025 19:43

The people who oppose the cuts are mad that the government were trying to push this through and the people who support the cuts are mad that they backed down at the last minute.

The government have conducted an exercise in alienating both sides.

38.4% of PIP goes to mental health conditions, 28% of these are for anxiety and depression alone. I have both but I do power through.....

Also where do people expect the money to actually come from?

illegal immigrants by taxpayers likely total less than 7 billion each year, pip costs 21.6 billion. I get that the 7 billion could be used to offset PIP, but what could the solution for illegal immigration actual be? Aligator Alcatraz?

Also nothing about targeting the elderly or disabled in their manifesto. The moment they got elected they suddenly be rought these policies in.

NotReallyCounting · 02/07/2025 19:52

I think the country is in a very big mess and there isn't an easy answer to it.

I think that multinational corporations are sucking all the taxes out of the country and all we have left is globe trotting billionaires and poverty. The Labour government can't do a lot about that as they're only a national government.

I think it would be better to talk to us about the real problems. I don't think cutting disability payments is a great idea.

18thday · 02/07/2025 19:53

Yeah I agree with you.

So what do you propose we do with disabled people?

Theunamedcat · 02/07/2025 19:53

Fix the NHS and there won't be a need for pip claims for mental health

Plus employers need to willingly hire disabled people

User37482 · 02/07/2025 19:54

I’m annoyed at what they did to NI, it’s a jobs killer, now they have expanded visa access for low skilled office jobs, these are jobs that recent school leavers and grads should be shoved into.

18thday · 02/07/2025 19:55

The only other option is more taxes

I honestly dont think it is compassionate to leave the huge numbers of young people on disability benefits, for mental health since Covid, to rot. I think it's weak and ultimately very damaging to them and the economy. Too many Labour MPs are virtue signalling student union activists with zero clue and zero real compassion. I despise them.

This post captured it perfectly. I think Reform are now destined to win the next GE as a result of decisions this Government has taken. They are the makers of their own destiny. Richie was right when he warned that they would raise taxes.

True.
My son has 2 degrees.
He also has autism.
He can't get a job.
He gets the interview because they like to say how inclusive they are.
But, like the vast majority of autistic people, he is not wanted in the workplace.

Haven't they just made work visas harder and increased the salary requirements?
