I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

Yesterday, I prefer cash so will always use it if its accepted.

alcoholnightmare · 18/06/2025 12:20

Tipped my hairdresser in cash yesterday. Paid the total on card to the salon

MemorableTrenchcoat · 18/06/2025 12:21

Some time before the pandemic, so maybe late 2019.

doglover4ever · 18/06/2025 12:21

Today at the pet shop.

WoahThreeAces · 18/06/2025 12:22

About 20 minutes ago when I bought fruit from a market stall

stayathomer · 18/06/2025 12:22

I’ve started using cash as I’ve been let down by internet on my phone and not having as much as I thought in my account. Also easier to budget (for me)

Wolmando · 18/06/2025 12:23

Yesterday, I haven't been out today

purplecorkheart · 18/06/2025 12:23

This morning. I try and use cash in a lot of the small local businesses we have in my town as I see what my workplace pay in card processing fees for relatively few transactions.

UtterlyOtterly · 18/06/2025 12:23

About 15 minutes ago when I bought a birthday card.

Belladog1 · 18/06/2025 12:23

I had to use some in the pub the other day as the card machine was down.

I also give my hairdresser his tip in cash.

I have to admit it isn't often though. I normally take out about £100 to keep in my purse, and it generally lasts all year.

NewBinBag · 18/06/2025 12:24

Still quite often.
Kids have to take cash subs to scouts weekly.
Pay the takeaway delivery guy in cash most Fridays.
Occasional £10 in a birthday card for kids parties
I try to pay my hairdresser in cash (so she doesn't lose the transaction fee).

I don't carry cash but we have a communal jar with a float at home if anyone needs it.

Hedjwitch · 18/06/2025 12:24

Sunday,in France.

MayaPinion · 18/06/2025 12:24

Can’t remember. It must be at least a year or two.

QuinceTamarillo · 18/06/2025 12:25

Yesterday. I will probably also use cash if I buy anything in person today.

Coffeeishot · 18/06/2025 12:25

Yesterday in a shop chewing gum i bought was 75p, I use cash here and there i gave a parent some cash in a birthday card recently so withdrew money and have been using it.

CheerfulBunny · 18/06/2025 12:26

I hardly ever have cash these days. My OH always does though, he feels strongly that he should always have some on him. I hadnt really thought too much about it but someone I was talking to the other day mentioned the situation in Spain recently which made me reflect that if something like that happened here, I'd be completely stuffed.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 18/06/2025 12:26

Last Friday, hospital car park. I would normally pay by contactless card, but the reader seemed to be having “issues” yet again. Luckily, I just happened to have a few pound coins in my pocket.

Coffeeishot · 18/06/2025 12:27

I also pay and tip my hairdressers in cash.

heathspeedwell · 18/06/2025 12:27

I use it all the time. My lovely father in law volunteers for a small local charity that helps elderly people with days out, disability aids and other things that really improve their quality of life. Almost 100% of donations go straight towards helping people (unlike large charities which spend a massive amount on staff salaries).
He has said that a large part of their revenue comes from collection 'tins' that are left by the tills in pubs, garages and shops etc. if people stop using cash then little charities like his would go under and all the elderly people that they help would be significantly worse off.

HelpMeGetThrough · 18/06/2025 12:28

I use it all the time.

For me it would be “when did I last use a card in a shop” and I’d struggle to remember.

KnickerlessParsons · 18/06/2025 12:28

Just now, in Corfu. Most places here seem to prefer it.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 18/06/2025 12:28

I put a £1 coin in the trolley at Tesco yesterday. Otherwise I’m not sure… maybe the school summer fete last June?

Coffeeishot · 18/06/2025 12:28

@CheerfulBunny what happened in Spain?

Edited to answer my own question.
Oh you mean the power cuts

NoAlarmsRequired · 18/06/2025 12:29

A couple of days ago, I try to use it as much as possible.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/06/2025 12:30

We are very rural here. Several of the local takeaways only accept cash. I had to put £1.50 in the machine to check my tyre pressures on Monday as the card reading bit wasn't working.

I work in a supermarket and far more often than I would like the card readers drop out of connection and we'll have a ten or twenty minute period where we can only take cash. Luckily there's an ATM just down the road.
