When was the last time you used cash?

I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

Does no one find it annoying to regularly go to an ATM and withdraw cash?

It just seems like a really unnecessary faff.

It’s a 40 min round trip car journey for an ATM so yes, massive faff.

DD gets coins from my dad when she sees him, I raid her stash in emergencies (she gets paid back!).

I absolutely dread needing cash.

Ruelzdontapplyhere · 18/06/2025 13:51

I use cash all the time I prefer cash to using my card. With cash I can see exactly what I have to spend.
I leave what ever is needed for bills in the bank and withdraw the rest.

You can withdraw cash [and lodge cash and cheques] from your bank account at the counter in a Post Office too. The retailer that operates the PO gets a payment from the bank so it keeps local shops alive too.

I usually carry some for walking around cash, tips, school events, occasional taxi driver doesn't want card for small trips. Then there's the window cleaner and other ad hoc cash in hand stuff from time to time.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 13:52

The eyebrow lady in my town only takes cash.
I had to use the ATM and only two places that have one of those all the banks have closed, so actually getting the cash isn’t quite as easy as it once was and parts of the town don’t have any machines at all.
They definitely want cash to be a thing of the past.

skyeisthelimit · 18/06/2025 13:52

at the weekend. I still use cash a lot. I live in a rural area and a lot of shops have a minimum spend on a card.

I carry card and cash, so that everything is covered. I would hate to be unable to buy something I wanted if a card machine was down, or to have to buy things I don't want, to get over £5.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 13:54

Can’t remember the last cheque I wrote.. must have been years ago.

FishPie2 · 18/06/2025 13:54

I was at Bury market last week and most traders prefer cash - lots of the stalls have notices up saying so and saw a queue at the cash machine of people getting money to do their shopping.
I know there is a charge for paying money in the banks but hopefully not as much as keep using a card for £1 purchase.

Natsku · 18/06/2025 13:54

Last used it a few days ago when I gave DS 2 euros for scrubbing the wet room floor.

Just got given 40 euros in cash half way through writing this post though (to buy cake, as payment for dogsitting)

Post offices are only open during the hours that a lot of people are at work though. I wouldn’t be making a special trip into town to go to the post office on a Saturday morning to withdraw cash.
Far easier to just use my phone/card.

I’m a good distance from an ATM but find that lots of shops do cash back (if you buy something). Also the mobile PO comes to a village nearer then an ATM.
and if all else fails I’ll ask my mate Liz, she’s always got cash on her!

Doggymummar · 18/06/2025 13:57

Today, paying the window cleaner

SushiDisco · 18/06/2025 13:58

A couple of hours ago on parking. Before that Sunday when we went to the car boot sale!

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 13:58

I used to get ‘ cash back ‘ a lot in supermarkets, do they still do this ?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 18/06/2025 13:59

Lots are open late particularly in urban areas. I usually just withdraw some cash when I drop off a parcel periodically.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 18/06/2025 13:59

Probably at the weekend. My kids palm off all their cash on me because they don't use it (but get slipped cash by grandparents, at work etc). I transfer to their accounts and then end up with a tin full of cash that every now and then I go out and spend - it's like free shopping because I've already accounted for it having gone out.

I can’t remember the last time I went into a post office, must be 3+ years ago. So it would always be a special trip. As opposed to just tapping my phone… no brainer for me.

What’s the minimum spend for cash back, do you know?

Not generally - Asda don't but I think when I googled it it said Tesco will tell you to go to the Service Counter. Luckily I have loads of cash machines to choose from, 2 outside Asda and about 6 on our local high street. If all fails I can get cash from Nationwide (my bank) and take out a couple of hundred to pay window cleaner, odd job lad, etc but if I paid by card all the time I would very much overspend. Even now I have a card to write on the amounts I have put on the card.
And yes I am old and only use mobile phone as a phone. 😃

Brenda34 · 18/06/2025 14:10

Some on Friday to pay my hairdresser and some on Sat at the cash only chippie

henlake7 · 18/06/2025 14:10

This morning. Bought a t shirt in Primark and a cabbage in the greengrocers.

TBH I dont usually use cash but I found a random twenty in a handbag!😃

For someone who lives 20 mins from an ATM it's likely they are also not near to an urban post office.

Mingenious · 18/06/2025 14:11

I use cash every weekend to pay for hobby frees but I can’t remember used cash in a shop. I pay for everything on my phone.

In my local shop and the garage I used yesterday for cash there is no min spend, you just have to buy something, I presume so they can open the till with a transaction of good (I actually have no idea!).
