I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

Yesterday at the hairdressers.

Judellie · 18/06/2025 12:49

On Monday (I think), I spent £4.79 at Tesco. I had a load of coins as we went walking at Craster last week and had been warned cash was better for parking machines - then when we got there it would only take card (or app I suppose) and the coins had started falling out of my purse so wanted to use them.
I do like to keep a little cash tho and do use it sometimes.
These posts about cash show up so regularly that I'm sure a few people have notes in their diary to start them up again!

Bought a single potato last week from the greengrocer. Can't remember the last time before that though.

RaraRachael · 18/06/2025 12:50

I had a workman in yesterday so would expect to be emailed an invoice to do a bank transfer.
Nope - cash or cheque only!! I never have cash in the house so had to dig out the cheque book. Last stub I'd written was 3 years ago 😅

At a village yard sale about a month ago. It’s on once a year, I did notice some had card machines.

Hollyhobbi · 18/06/2025 12:52

Is it true that ATMs in the UK and Northern Ireland don’t dispense £50 sterling notes?

It pisses me off when shops have signs saying ‘we prefer cash’. Paying by card is more convenient for me, and I’m the customer!

But the shop’s stating a preference so still have a choice,

MyKingdomForACat · 18/06/2025 12:53

Had to withdraw some cash yesterday. Felt odd plus those new plastic notes don’t fold very well.

EdisinBurgh · 18/06/2025 12:53

Yesterday. A tip in a restaurant.

Always have cash on me and try to use it. Now more than ever.

My friend has a small craft bussiness she does markets and has a card machine now , because some customers dont have cash.

TheDandyLion · 18/06/2025 12:54

2 years ago was the last time I withdrew cash. Its still in my purse now.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 18/06/2025 12:55

Yesterday, to pay for my dental check up.

MoonWoman69 · 18/06/2025 12:56

I always use cash. Use it or lose it and I'd rather not lose it! A lot of places I use prefer cash as it costs them to process the card transactions if they're running a small business.
And I got one do not want a cashless society!

luckylavender · 18/06/2025 12:57

On Saturday at the local butcher

MrTiddlesTheCat · 18/06/2025 12:58

I use cash as much as I can ever since I watched a video explaining the scam. A £10 note circulates round and round and is always worth £10. But if you pay electronically the bank take a cut every transation. So the initial electronic £10 gradually gets transferred to the bank. They get richer, we get poorer.

That isn’t necessarily true though. Banks also charge businesses for depositing cash, and the fees are pretty hefty. So unless the cash isn’t being paid into a bank at all (and that would be unusual, because most businesses will pay cash in), then the bank are still taking a cut.

A couple of times already this week and I'm sure there'll be more times when I'm out and about. I see people in shops paying with cash every time I go out, it's not remarkable ime

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 18/06/2025 13:03

I can't remember exactly. Perhaps a couple of months ago to wash all my "big" linens at the launderette, which is a coin-op. No contactless there yet! I have seen contactless ones in Spain though. I digress. No, I tend not to use cash because I budget better on a debit card.

muddyford · 18/06/2025 13:04

Yesterday, in the local pharmacy.
And Saturday in the post office.

TheHillsIsLonely · 18/06/2025 13:07

Over the last week I've used cash to pay for parking, buy raffle tickets, pay our mechanic and pay for a DC's haircut.

Not true. I had £50 notes from one a few months back. Inconvenient tbh. I ended up paying them back into the bank.

I’m going to have to get cash in the next hour to pay the dog groomer.

DiscoBob · 18/06/2025 13:10

Cash is king! I love cash. I do try and use it as much as possible.
I don't like the idea that everything we buy and everywhere we go is being monitored and monetised.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 18/06/2025 13:11

paid my gardener £20 this morning

Crushed23 · 18/06/2025 13:16

I use it all the time. I live in the US and tip cash to my nail technician, eyebrow lady, facialist, hairdresser, masseuse, etc. Carry at least $50 around with me day-to-day.

rosemarble · 18/06/2025 13:17

Yesterday. Twice. Once to pay for a lake swim and then (knowing we all had actual cash) to buy some raffle tickets from a friend.

I often use a £1 in the sports centre locker. So I used cash but didn't actually spend it.

The mobile chippy van only takes cash and we go there maybe once a month.
