I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

Today. I use cash regularly. On this occasion I was going to pay by card but the reader had lost its signal, so I whipped out the cash instead.

Meadowfinch · 18/06/2025 17:53

Saturday, buying plants from a market stall holder. DS paid the barber with a £10 note. I paid my salon with a cheque. They doesn't take cards or phones, cash or cheque only.

Before that, Friday night in the pub. Thursday buying some Voltarol in the pharmacy........

That's rural living. Plenty of places with unreliable mobile signals.

CarpetKnees · 18/06/2025 17:54

Yesterday.
I haven't spent anything today.
It's useful to have both.

mylurcheristhebest · 18/06/2025 17:59

In February I think, I just have no reason to use cash. I used it in a shop in a hospital.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 18/06/2025 18:03

Every week at Slimming World meetings.
Yesterday getting new batteries in a few watches.
Today having keys cut.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/06/2025 18:08

I span a coin for a cricket match yesterday evening...

The guy who cuts our hedge operates in cash. Paid him last week. I spent a £20 in a shop to get the right notes for him.

AllTheShadesofGreen · 18/06/2025 18:20

Months ago. I have a small amount in my purse and my parents prefer cash as a gift, otherwise it's card every time.

AllTheShadesofGreen · 18/06/2025 18:26

All these small businesses taking cash only might be tax dodging. If only I could tell my employer I want some of my wages in cash, and please don't tax that bit.

Still believe that the government like to monitor our spending habits and cards is the way forwards.
it is only my own opinion though !

An opinion based on absolutely no evidence!

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2025 18:37

Ok, no evidence ! I just think that there must be a reason the government are pushing us towards a cash free society !

Taytocrisps · 18/06/2025 18:44

I'll be taking out cash this week, to pay my sister for fights she has booked. She refuses to sign.up to Revut. I guess I could ask her for her bank details, but I may as well just pay her the cash. She pays cash for everything herself. She also refuses to use banking online.

My hairdresser only takes cash.

nex18 · 18/06/2025 18:48

May, my nephews birthday money. Exchanged it with my ds, bank transfer for his birthday cash, I presume the same few notes circulate around the family when it’s a child’s birthday.
I have a trolley pound in the car and a locker pound in my gym bag but I don’t spend them.
I much prefer to use Apple Pay and be able to see on the mobile app where I spent the money. If a business is cash only then I likely don’t bother. There’s no cash point in the village I live in, the nearest one is a 15 minute drive and is inside a shop, it’s about 25 minutes drive to the nearest outdoor one. Cash is very inconvenient and more difficult for me to track my spending.

Xenia · 18/06/2025 18:49

Tip at the hair dresser. I deliberately used it even for food and petrol until the pandemic and then I gave in and moved to cards!

Simonjt · 18/06/2025 19:13

A few years ago, cash payments are unusual where we live and most places don’t take cash.

School Fair… 14th June

I tend to favour tapping but every now and then I get cash out with the sole purpose of using it in my favourite regular places so it might sway any discussions about moving cashless

Graylern · 18/06/2025 19:59

About a month ago in an independent bakery. It just felt like a local sort of place where they'd prefer cash. I generally use a card, but always carry cash just in case. Never want to be stuck if the cards/phone don't work.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 18/06/2025 20:16

Since I moved over to universal credit I've used cash more. It's annoying enough they can go through my bank statements. I'm not sure I want my purchases noted as well. At least it's mostly ATM transactions and direct debit this way. It'll be less for me to print out too.

You should ask them. I used to buy my morning coffee with cash from a little independent kiosk at the station because I assumed they'd prefer it as it was only £2. Then they went cashless! The woman who owns it said it was more expensive to bank the cash than to use the card machine.

This i totally get, I would do the same if I knew someone might pick through things and look at my spending.

In what way is the government pushing you to a cash free society?

SisSuffragette · 18/06/2025 21:01

I went to a fete at the weekend and used cash there for tombola etc

Triatle · 18/06/2025 21:35

Today. For a vet bill and for a coffee.
Yesterday for dog food.
Monday for the hairdresser

They'll prize cash usage out of my cold dead hands.

Use it or lose it

Anyone who thinks the demise of cash is a good thing is a delusional fool.

Triatle · 18/06/2025 21:36

And if I can and have a choice, I'll avoid 'card only' places in favour of places that take cash.
