I’m trying to remember the last time I used cash and it was April 5th to buy fuel. A friend owed me money and gave me cash.

i think it’s the only time this year I’ve spent cash

Yesterday as my mum gave me cash for something I bought her. I like to have a bit of cash as a back up as cashless dh has been caught out a couple of times. A lot of my local shops now have signs at the till politely requesting you pay with cash if possible as they prefer it.

Sofiewoo · 18/06/2025 13:22

Probably a year ago, maybe even 2 or 3?
I literally have no need to ever use cash. Unless you get paid cash in hand then it’s an extra faff to regularly go to an atm, I can’t see the benefit at all.

springissprung2025 · 18/06/2025 13:23

Paid my plumber £100 in cash last week ( had to go to local cash point as he said he’d prefer cash to bank transfer). And yes clearly he won’t be putting the job through his books

MrsPringledusts · 18/06/2025 13:25

Just a few minutes ago at the Post Office to buy a book of stamps. If I can't pay cash in a shop, I won't shop there

Mumofsoontobe3 · 18/06/2025 13:29

I pay my window cleaner cash every month. Always have done, he does take card now too I believe. My kids love watching the window cleaner and it's always such a lovely exchange between them. It always leaves opportunity to tip in the height of summer when my windows are covered in bird shit. 💩

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 18/06/2025 13:31

I only use a card online so everything offline is cash.

I just don't use businesses that are card only.

Last time I used cash was this morning paying for a cab.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/06/2025 13:40

otherwise rarely but my son’s karate dojo has a preference for cash and whacks on another 50p for card payments! That is the only thing we regularly use cash for.

we def used cash a bit in Spain recently but that was more to do with the fact that we had some euros that needed spending.

in the Netherlands and Denmark I have noticed the society is turning very anti-cash and you see lots of “card only” signs.

Not true. I had £50 notes from one a few months back. Inconvenient tbh. I ended up paying them back into the bank.

I’m going to have to get cash in the next hour to pay the dog groomer.

That’s mad. In Ireland you are lucky to get. €20 note from a cash machine especially in Dublin. Can’t understand why you’d have to put them back into the bank? Does no one have change of 50 pound notes?

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/06/2025 13:41

Even tradesmen round here seem to prefer bank transfers to cash these days

FishPie2 · 18/06/2025 13:41

All the time unless it is a large transaction or buying from Amazon. I feel mean using a card for something small when shops have to pay the fee.

tripleginandtonic · 18/06/2025 13:42

Never really use cash but that hadn't really changed in the last couple of decades
Miss writing cheques though.

Same here, I can’t remember the last time I had a tradesperson who wanted anything other than bank transfer. It’s generally because they have to pay a fee to pay cash into a business account.

I opened a new account with Nationwide a few weeks ago and they sent me a cheque book - why?

Why? Is it not more convenient to use Apple Pay or even a card?

Cash seems archaic.

FancyCatSlave · 18/06/2025 13:44

Aside from my daughter’s pocket money which I helped her spend at a fete 2 weeks ago- I last paid in cash sometime last year. I don't do cash as a rule, we are rural and almost everywhere does card as there’s no banks around or cash points.

DD is getting her own card when she turns 6 this year so even her cash will disappear.

A couple of days ago to buy some eggs.

Our local pub has a sign up saying that they prefer cash.

Really? I opened a new bank account with Nationwide earlier this year, and I didn't get one. I'm feeling a bit miffed!!!!

I honestly can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque. Probably over 10yrs ago now.

They still have to pay to deposit the cash though, both come with a fee if it’s properly declared by the business.

They have to pay to bank cash!

I gave the woman at the laundrette cash for a service wash about an hour ago. I had to go and get some out specially. That’s the only time I ever used cash these days.

unsync · 18/06/2025 13:45

This morning. In a cafe whilst meeting my friend, followed by the village shop to buy raspberries.

IHateWasps · 18/06/2025 13:46

This morning. I use it regularly.

EdithStourton · 18/06/2025 13:46

Last Saturday at 3 stalls on the local market.

smallsilvercloud · 18/06/2025 13:47

A month ago, I only get cash out if the kids need to spend a school for a fayre or non uniform day, everything else is Apple Pay or bank transfer.

Sofiewoo · 18/06/2025 13:48

Does no one find it annoying to regularly go to an ATM and withdraw cash?

It just seems like a really unnecessary faff.
