How many countries have you visited?

Florally · 28/05/2025 21:28

My kids were playing around with AI and learned that the average person on earth has been to less than one country (other than their country of residence..)

And for the UK specifically, 9. (Point something…)

I’m just being pointlessly nosy, mostly because I thought it would be much lower. (For example, a lot of people I know go back to the same destination year on year..)

How about you?

France, Ireland, Spain, Croatia, Turkey

MaySea · 29/05/2025 05:47

31

31 countries including the UK. I have counted Hong Kong which is not strictly a separate (from China) country and I’ve counted the Vatican. I have not counted Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as separate countries and I have not counted Jersey / Bermuda / Gibraltar as they are not technically sovereign countries.

Actually it’s 33 countries. I forgot India and the Maldives.

Sskka · 29/05/2025 07:24

How visited does it have to be to count as ‘visited’? I’ve been to 24 but two were only day or afternoon trips across a border (plus two microstates done in the same way, but then a day in Monaco feels like a proper visit when a day in Switzerland doesn’t quite). And then there was another where I only went to a hotel for a meeting, and one where I didn’t even get off the bus!

So my answer is somewhere between 18 and 24. I feel like it’s 22.

Passportpantsandcuriosity · 29/05/2025 07:26

I’m 65 and I think I make it 65 - I haven’t counted Scotland, Wales or Jersey. By the time my dc left school we’d taken them to about 20 and in the decade or so since they’ve more than doubled that number. We all love travelling.

I think it counts if you go there for the day but not if you are only changing planes or staying on the bus.

HelenHywater · 29/05/2025 07:39

68 - I do count a country if I've been there for a mini break, but haven't counted the 4 nations of the UK. Eastern Europe also a bit tricky for me as I was there mostly pre-1989 when I went interrailling.

HelenHywater · 29/05/2025 07:39

I don't count btw - I just went a did it now when I saw this thread!

Passportpantsandcuriosity · 29/05/2025 07:40

The only one I’ve counted where I didn’t spend more than 1 night is the Vatican. I don’t count airport transit - I expect that would add another 5 or 6. And I haven’t included Switzerland because I just went through on a bus! Only stopped at a service station- more than 40 years ago . Must go back and visit properly!

I was the same with Switzerland so I went back last year and can’t believe it it took me so long to go there’s properly, I absolutely loved it.

DinoLil · 29/05/2025 07:45

12 that I can remember.

Passportpantsandcuriosity · 29/05/2025 07:49

I grew up in rural Wales and our next door neighbours had never been further than the nearest big town , 12 miles away. The husband used to go to the nearest small town, 4 miles away, once a week but I never knew his wife to leave the farm. In those days we had a butcher and a baker who delivered weekly and as a couple they lived very simply. It’s a way of life which I’m glad I glimpsed because it’s gone forever.

Last time I went to Scotland they didn't have their own parliament, so I would count them as part of the UK for my total. Amd as i live in the UK i didn't count it. Wales is a principality so wouldn't count as separate anyway. When I went to East Germany it was its own country pre fall of the Berlin Wall, so it counts. It wouldn't count now.

Ok that kind of makes sense - depends on what it was when you went.

Pawse · 29/05/2025 07:56

I prefer the Visited App as it counts the number of countries instead of just giving a percentage.

Sandrine1982 · 29/05/2025 07:58

38 countries.

lived in 2 countries other than the UK in the past.

Ph2028 · 29/05/2025 08:02

27 including HK and vatican

The one where I didn’t get off the bus was Paraguay. What a klutz. When am I ever going to go back there again?!

travailtotravel · 29/05/2025 08:06
  1. I'm 52. It's a thing. Not including multiple visits eg France a lot and India 7 times!!

  1. Some many times - Greece, France, Italy and Switzerland. US several times, Egypt and Antigua. But otherwise mostly Europe. Need to broaden my horizons before my time runs out!

Plus one. Realised I visited Croatia when it was part of Yugoslavia. I use the Been app so have now added that on.

My mother is from the Rhondda Valley. When she used to travel to Cardiff (around 45 minutes away) her Nan used to ask “Why are you going all the way there for?”

😊

Is there much to do in Liechtenstein? A friend wants to go there but we would have to fly to Switzerland and get the train, making it expensive.

There’s a great national museum in Vaduz (the capital), also treasure chamber which includes beautiful jewels and a faberge eggs, and the parliament is worth visiting too. There’s the Liechtenstein trail, where you can hike around the entire country. The chairlift near Malbun will take you up a mountain for incredible views. Schaan has a great culture/music festival in the summer.
If you only look at the castle (which you can’t go inside) and get the tourist passport stamp, you’d be doing yourself a disservice!

LuxuryWoman2020 · 29/05/2025 11:44

10 so far

drspouse · 29/05/2025 12:50

I have just totally wasted my morning asking chat GPT for Eastern European itineraries to up my country count.
