How many countries have you visited?

Florally · 28/05/2025 21:28

My kids were playing around with AI and learned that the average person on earth has been to less than one country (other than their country of residence..)

And for the UK specifically, 9. (Point something…)

I’m just being pointlessly nosy, mostly because I thought it would be much lower. (For example, a lot of people I know go back to the same destination year on year..)

How about you?

Just realised I forgot one other African country too. A friend and I were going to travel to The Gambia but they had a mini coup so we went to Egypt instead.

I'm now wondering how to up that number quite easily. I've been to most of Western Europe but maybe interrailing in Eastern Europe, or island hopping in the Caribbean?
I work with someone from a small Caribbean island. She was telling me about the population of each one, they are tiny and I think quite close together. I could fancy that...
Or a Baltic cruise, though I've been to most of the Nordic countries.

Giddykiddy · 28/05/2025 22:24

62 but a lot of that was work travel - some fairly off the beaten track counties like Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Togo, Senegal, Burkina Faso

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/05/2025 22:25

Most countries in Europe, Mexico, Canada, USA, many countries in S America, Caribbean and Central America, many countries in Asia. Probably about 45.

I’m 40 and have been to 5 countries outside the UK, or 7 if you count a flight connection in an airport.

MalcolmMoo · 28/05/2025 22:29

Ooh this is a fun thread:
France
Belgium
Luxembourg
Italy
Netherlands
Spain
Norway
New Zealand
Australia
Czech Republic
Greece

Switzerland
Vatican city if that counts!?

and soon Croatia!

Edit to say I’m 32, I plan to do most of Europe over the next few years.

RedToothBrush · 28/05/2025 22:29

36 countries

helpmeCalifornia · 28/05/2025 22:29

Not counting UK:

Ireland
France
Switzerland
Monaco
Spain
Greece
Italy
Portugal
Cyprus
Turkey
USA
Canada
Egypt
Morocco
South Africa
Cuba
Barbados
Jamaica
Antigua

Lived/ worked in 3 of them.

Technically set foot in the Netherlands but it was for a connecting flight and never left the airport so can’t count that really.

Still so many more I’d like to visit but it’s definitely slowed right down since meeting DH/ having DD. Maybe one day again!

CruCru · 28/05/2025 22:30

31 countries including the UK. I have counted Hong Kong which is not strictly a separate (from China) country and I’ve counted the Vatican. I have not counted Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as separate countries and I have not counted Jersey / Bermuda / Gibraltar as they are not technically sovereign countries.

Tarantella6 · 28/05/2025 22:30

I went Interrailing when I was 18 which I highly recommend, we had a great time. And everyone should go to Liechtenstein 😅

I haven't been to Scotland or Ireland. In my head they are cold places like Scandinavia, I have no interest in going anywhere colder than home.

PleaseAndThankYou12 · 28/05/2025 22:30

I’m 31 and have been to 23 countries 😊

Is there much to do in Liechtenstein? A friend wants to go there but we would have to fly to Switzerland and get the train, making it expensive.

Decapitatedsausage · 28/05/2025 22:33

I’m at 25 and I thought it would be higher as I’ve travelled quite a bit I thought. My sons 13 and is at 11, where as I hadn’t left the UK at his age.

I use an app called Been to record them on.

I downloaded Been last time one of these threads came up. It shows you on a map where you have been, what percentage of the world/ each continent you have listed.

I’ve visited 24

JDM625 · 28/05/2025 22:34

27, I'm mid 40's.

FrangipaniBlue · 28/05/2025 22:34

Not really, there's a castle though. And you get a stamp in your passport 😅 I remember it as a very tranquil place (which could be because we arrived on a Sunday) and worth a day trip to tick it off a list!

Pretty place but not much to do there.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 28/05/2025 22:38
  1. One of which was for about an hour and we shouldn't have been there.😂
Middleagedstriker · 28/05/2025 22:38

4 nations, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Greece, turkey, Morocco, India, USA, Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Belize, Malaysia.

Some of them many times. Much less since having kids. Once they all go will travel again outside Europe. Just too expensive with 4 of them!
